Why would anyone delete a comment on their hub?

   Why would anyone delete a comment on their hub?
   
   If I deleted a comment on one of my hubs, I would figure I am not good at dealing with people who might disagree with me.  People can agree or disagree, it's a free world.  If the comment was mean or nasty, well I'm not the one looking bad, the person who wrote the disparaging remark does.  How do you feel about deleting comments?

   Personally I would not do it, I advocate free speech and will practise what I preach (ooh, little rhyme there)!
   
   I have had it where my comments have not been published, rather than being deleted on 2 occasions, both times were hubs promoting a scam, which I pointed out in the comments, so I guess that I am not so surprised that it was never allowed...

   If i make a comment and it is proven incorrect it stays. Then I will revise my comment.

   I will delete a duplicate comment where the poster hit enter twice.
   
   If something is downright hateful, abusive, with foul language and has no value to the hub, then I will delete it.
   
   If it is spam then I will delete it.
   
   Other than that, I never delete the comments, even if they disagree.

   People can agree or disagree with what I write, agreed!  I have not deleted any of the comments from my hubs, although I disagree with some of them.  But what will a person do if the comment is considered abusive?  So far, I have not encountered one yet, but if I do, I don't think I will delete it, perhaps I may report it.

   You can also delete comments if they are below the expected quality. If someone just posts 'nice one', then I just delete it. It shows no effort that you have even read the hub and it's just to have your name show up in the comments.

   I agree with you completely. I will allow absolutely any comment on my hubs except those that are too filthy for children to read. Be mean to me, be gratuitously insulting, call me a 'blockhead.' Its all good. Because you know what they say in show business: "There's no such thing as bad publicity."

   Only time I delete a comment is if I feel it is a spammer.  Free speech or not.......I don't want to look at content about losing 30 pounds in 7 days over and over and over

   I had a comment deleted. Not sure why. I did use the word "penile", but hardly in a derogatory way. I figured the dude was an ignoramus. Wasn't being critical. Didn't mean to hurt his feelings, if I did, but I do believe in allowing all comments.

    I deleted one as the person was insulting about a third party. They may have been right about what they said, but they did not explain what the problem was.
    
    I do not know the person who left the comment or the author they referred to, If they had a problem they should deal with it another way.
    
    The main reason for deletion though was that when I tried to click on their name to see their profile nothing was there..

    Some webmaster post comments to hubs to gain a backlink to their website. If you spot a pointless comment where someone just tries to gain a backlink you should delete it..

    I draw the line at spam. I don't want to insult my readers by allowing this through and am glad we hubbers have the choice. The comments here show that the line is one that is not easily defined

    I like how you put it, "If the comment was mean or nasty, well I'm not the one looking bad, the person who wrote the disparaging remark does." However, it's sometimes great to DELETE comments to avoid any form of scandal. Just plain simple.

    I would allow any and all comments on my hubs. If I disagree with what they are saying, obviously I can respond back with my own view.

    There's lots of reasons to delete comments.  The main reason that I delete comments is because they're spam.  I haven't received spam on HubPages (yet), but I get them other places.
    
    I also try to maintain a moral standard on any page I create.  If your comment is not appropriate, then I'll delete it.
    
    You can disagree with me though.  That's fine.

    I had some answers on my Hub Page, that I did not agree with but I posted them any way, the only ones I would delete is a duplicate one.  I believe this is how everyone can express their feeling and have discussions concerning anything. They can either agree or disagree; it’s called Freedom of Speech, and thank God we have it.

    Agreed with you and Mr. Tindle, in terms of comments related to my hub, they all get posted and I even appreciate a good (civilized) back and forth debate.
    
    Also agree though, I wouldn't allow someone to post negatively about a third party by name or "spam".

    If a comment was Malicious I would deny publication.
    
    I recently received a comment posting that pointed out a misspelling.  I took it as a correction and posted a thank you after correcting the spelling.
    
    Good hearted criticism is okay with me.

    I have removed a comment that was just an advert for a website which had nothing to do with my hub nor did it contain any comment about anything to do with my hub.
    
    I did this because it just was not relevant to the hub and there was no sign that the person had even read my hub it was just pure spam.
    
    I have no problems with people including links in their comments most of them enhance the hub and have proved to be very interesting but spam I think deserves being deleted.

    I do not delete comments. But I delete advertisements that are not relevant to the topic of the Hub in anyway. I can accept opinions that are against mine. But if they are obviously malicious towards others (by race, religion, political views, cultural practices etc, disabilities etc etc.) I DELETE them.

    I don't delete comments, I feel they are a helpful learning experience. If I would get a nasty, real derogatory comment which I have not yet, hopefully I will just consider the source and not get into a war of words with an un-armed person!

    I have only deleted one answer from a commenter, and it was because they made their own advertisement, which was okay for a while, but then it really took away from what I was doing. I have left nasty little remarks left by others, and remarks that whole-heartily disagreed with my point. That is fine with me. Just don't disrespect anyone, and it is okay to express your opinion.
    
    I have had spammers that I didn't delete, but they hang in limbo.

    I deleted somebody's comment today because that person called me by my given name.  And I did not want folks to know it.  Other than that, people can say what they want on my stuff, I don't care.

    Because they have the right to not allow that level of freedom of speech. If what you are saying is not adding to the overall effectiveness of the Hub, then the writer should not think twice...delete!
    
    We have the freedom of verbal speech and written speech, but we choose what we want to hear or read.

    Like others here, there are several reasons why I would delete a comment. They are:
    
    1) Spam
    2) Abusive language or personal attacks on myself or others
    3) Commenter is from outside HP without a useful comment, but includes a link to their website in the comment
    4) This one only come up recently - someone posted a copy of a poem that was previously published and that has been also published in other comments. Besides being self-promotional, I feared that it would get me flagged for duplicate content, so I deleted it.

    When a person as a 'comment' posts a patently anti-semitic, racist,  sexist attack, using the comment section of your article as a soap box, you delete it.  It has nothing to do with you or your article.

    There can be many reasons, but I would not waste time with kid stuff.
    People that want to be petty and small need to get a life.
