asphyxia's Squidoo Earnings

Updated on March 6, 2013

My Lens Stats, Monthly Earnings and Tips For Making Money on Squidoo

Like a lot of new lensmasters, I was both intrigued by and skeptical about Squidoo's money-making potential. I had read enough lenses and blog posts to know the site wasn't a scam but I also wasn't convinced that I could earn a significant income from writing online. Despite those doubts, I gave Squidoo a shot -- and it's one of the best decisions I made last year.

My Squidoo journey is not typical. Many lensmasters earn very little during their first year. Becoming a successful squid takes research, dedication and creativity -- and a little bit of luck, too. Here you'll find tips for making money on Squidoo, my traffic and lensrank stats, monthly payout breakdowns and more.

asphyxia's Top 5 Squidoo Tips - Advice For New (and Not-So-New) Lensmasters

  1. Create ahead-of-the-curve lenses. I published my Katniss Everdeen Costume and Makeup lens in September 2011, six months before The Hunger Games became one of the highest grossing movies of all time. When something becomes insanely popular (like The Hunger Games or honey badgers that just don't care), it's too late to write about it. Why? Because there are likely dozens of websites and lenses already dedicated to the same idea. Figure out what's going to be hot next and write about that instead.
  2. Only include relevant product links. There are hundreds of products you could link to on any given lens. On my Upcoming Movies Based on Books lens, I include links to novels that are being turned into movies. I don't include links to movie posters, soundtracks, t-shirts, etc. Flooding a page with product links makes visitors feel like they're navigating a minefield. Instead, try placing a few targeted product links in strategic locations.
  3. Update lenses frequently. Keeping your lenses up-to-date increases lensrank and attracts new visitors. Photos and products sometimes disappear, which means you should routinely scan your work for broken links.
  4. Develop a niche (or two or three). When someone visits a particularly creative or informative lens, they often want to see more of that lensmaster's work. Write about what you know and write well. This means checking your lenses for spelling mistakes and grammatical errors.
  5. Focus on quality over quantity. One of my biggest Squid-peeves is stumbling upon a lens with little to no original content. Having hundreds of haphazard lenses that only attract a handful of visitors each week will not significantly increase your earnings. During my highest earning month, I had only 28 lenses.

Squidoo Lessons Learned in 2012

When I first joined Squidoo, the possibility of earning even $1,000 seemed unreal. Now,14 months and 38 lenses later, I've made just over $9,000 and I am so proud of that achievement. Last year, I made 5,347 sales and had more than 650,000 visits to my lenses.

Squidoo Goals for 2013 - My Goals for Earning, Writing and Participating in the Squidoo Community

  1. PUBLISH 37 NEW LENSES. This is a big goal for me. I kicked off 2012 with 22 lenses and ended up writing only 16 more. I have a load of WIP lenses stashed away for the coming year and I'm excited to publish them, but finding the time to write has been difficult since I started a new job last summer. Publishing 37 new lenses would bring me to a total of 75.
  2. BECOME A GIANT SQUID. Despite having written almost 40 lenses, I've never officially applied to be a Giant. There are huge perks that come with being a Giant and the application process isn't terribly difficult so this one should (hopefully) be easy to scratch off the list.
  3. INCREASE MY EARNINGS BY 20%. Last year, I earned a little over $9,000. Increasing my earnings by 20% (an ambitious but feasible goal) would add up to about $11,000. This will take a lot of work, but I've been doing my research and I'm ready to take on the challenge.
  4. REVAMP OLD LENSES. When your time is limited, it's easy to invest all of your energy into a few lenses that are already performing well. Those lenses have proven their merit so why not keep them fresh? This happened to me last year. My top lenses were continuously polished and everything else just sort of fell by the wayside. This year I'm planning to breathe new life into every lens.
  5. ACTIVELY PARTICIPATE IN THE SQUIDOO COMMUNITY. I'll be the first to admit that I don't participate nearly as often as I should in the Squidoo community. No excuses this year. You'll be seeing a lot more of me around these parts. :)

I killed my Squidoo earnings lens. Maybe I should have left it up as a historical record. It was fun reading yours. Good work.

Nice lens asphyxia you seem to be on the gold. Having been in business all my life I have found that one of the most important things you can do is stay positive. This is especially true in internet marketing. Sometimes negativity can creep into forums and you need to avoid that like the plague.

      Good luck to you. JimHouston33

Read your "upcoming movies for 2013", and was so amazed at your knowledge about movies/books... You are just too incredible for a young lady of 24. Not surprised one bit that you could make quite a bit of money out of those wonderful lenses of yours (I am a newbie, very new, only joined squidoo because I thought I could share some of my book & movie reviews here. Reading your lens about movies, I realised you are so above me in this field, at least with new movies and new books....).

I am still experimenting around with making lens, trying out different modules. And yes, I am quite skeptical about my ability of making any money here. Thank you for sharing this lens with us. (I expect you to earn more, much more, if you continue making similar lenses like the one "upcoming movies...").

@anonymous: Hey there! Thanks for stopping by. :) I checked out your profile page and the first things that struck me were the spelling and grammatical errors in your bio and the intro paragraphs of your top lenses. Quality is by far the best way to attract visitors to your lenses. Focus on improving the quality of your writing and your Squidoo earnings will increase substantially. Good luck!
