Celebrate Beauty, Celebrate Life

Everyone admires beauty in some way- we are just hard wired for it. Beauty, however, is something of an enigma and as one very well-known cliché says: "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder". I think that is true, but I also think there is something more to the science of what makes us think something or someone is beautiful.

My pages don't take you deeply into the metaphysical journey of what is beautiful so much as celebrate it. And it is also an interest of mine to learn the practice of cultivating the art of being as beautiful as we might want to be -which for me often takes the form of nurturing good health. Maybe appreciation of beauty and learning to accentuate our personal attractiveness go hand in hand.

Inner beauty is probably the most important and overlooked beauty tip there is. We gloss over it, taking for granted that yes, it's true but we want to get on to the "real" business of being beautiful, sexy, or glamorous...whatever it is that we personally call "beautiful".

This collection of hubs is to celebrate beauty, in all the mentioned aspects. And this one is to learn a bit more of why we find something "beautiful".

The Golden Ratio, Or Golden Mean

Proportions of Beauty

There is a mathematical formula for what appears attractive to our eyes, it is a ratio used by architects and artists.

Famous men of many disciplines have pored over this ratio:

  • Pythagoras and Euclid
  • Johannes Kepler
  • Roger Penrose
  • Leonardo da Vinci
  • Mondrian

Countless others, as well, but these are some of the more recognizable names.

They found in this geometric proportion, an important aspect of what we find beautiful. In nature it was found to be represented in the way branches are arranged along the stems of plants, and it is close to another well known pattern, The Fibonacci Sequence.

The Golden mean is seen as a measure in many parts of the the proportions of the Greek Parthenon, although it isn't known if it was intended.

I've tried out the BB creams, too. I'm won over to this light, easy way to protect and improve skin. I've tried different brands in the past couple years, but LOVE Smashbox products. If you go to Sephora you can find some of their products in trial sizes. If you are ready for a BB cream experience, go for it, and this one is excellent. I also have a hub review I've written for the Garnier brand. What is the difference between these two? This one has a lighter feel and is more suitable for evening wear (when you want more coverage and an elegant look). I use the less expensive Garnier BB cream for everyday.

What Makes A Human Face Attractive?

In a word: symmetry. The exact balance of two sides, as they correspond to each other.

The human body, including the face, has two sides. It is completely normal for those two sides to be off kilter from one another in some way, but the more they are alike... the more we feel the overall look is one of physical attractiveness.

Besides this basic sense of what makes a human beautiful, there is the factor of our cultural training . Fad sand fashions show us that we can learn to perceive beauty in the way we may be taught to: through our value for specific traits.

Life is full of all sorts of experiences...some wonderful and some terribly painful. I don't think there is any pain that art can't help soothe in some way... there is something healing in creating and viewing the beautiful things of life. Art is one extension of that Bible admonition:
