First off, know that I am not a techie at all. But, I have finally figured out a good strategy for writing titles for Google. Here's my question: If I go back to published hubs and change the titles, does Google look for the new title or the URL? In other words, should I bother with a new title or not?
No big deal as long as you include the keywords you want to rank for in your titles- Google web-crawlers look for keywords in URLs and titles independently; so the catch is to use your keywords
The title is far more important than the URL. On HP the URL cannot be changed - so just focus on the title.
Thanks all. As a writer, I want to write clever, interesting titles and subtitles. However, to get traffic, it is all about the keywords. Occasionally you can do both, but it seems rare.
The title is the most important thing, try to make it as long as possible, adding multiple keywords that are in the same niche. And in the summary don't add the same keywords, change them a bit. Google has started to analyze the titles and summaries more than backlinks. I know a guy who managed to rank #1 on Google (in a very hard to rank niche) by adding a lot of keywords in his tittles and summaries.
As I said before, make the tittle as long as possible.
That is not really a good idea. Stuffing the title full of keywords is not the best way to attain the best page rank.
I have several pages that are ranked at the top. Most of them are short, only four or five words.
If you change the title google will index the new title. Currently google puts lots of weight in keywords in title and description (hub summary in HP). You can’t change url in HP so do not bother about it. You should also try to include keywords in the title of the text capsule. Do not forget to caption all your pictures so that they get a chance to rank higher in Google image search. Try to keep keyword placement as natural as possible without over stuffing the hub keywords.
He makes an excellent point on the hub summary. Even if the title is short, the hub summary can contain other keywords (like pictures, video, etc) so that someone searching for that word, as well as the keyword(s) in your title, is more likely to see your hub.
Check out the hub summaries written by Writer Fox, Wrylilt, and Relache.They are all very good, and contain those words that are being searched for.
Everybody who uses Google search. Bing and Yahoo search engine do not use HP summary.
I always write my summary as a teaser; almost like an intro. Back to the drawing board.
I thought all your summaries were truly excellent. Made me realize how pathetic many of mine are and that mine need some serious work. Only advice I can think of is to think more about keywords when modifying them.

According to one forum thread I read on this issue, you should not use the full 200 characters that HP allows you when writing your summary. Google only sees the first 60 (I think) characters. It might be 100; either way, keep the summary as short as possible but mention the important keywords there.
Thanks for pointing this out. Google sees all but it displays 50 to 60 characters of the title in desktop search (18 px Arial in 512 pixels wide) and about 150 characters for summary (desktop search) and 115 characters for mobile search.
These days people prefer using a mobile over a desktop so I try to be in these limits, but occasionally exceed it, if the situation demands it.

Can anyone help me figure out how to best optimize my hubs? I have several that have scores of 90 and above but they hardly get any views...I'm not sure how I could improve that. Even ones that have been changed by Hubpages' editors still don't get much traffic. Is it just the titles that I should...

I now have 11 hubs that are not indexed by google - nothing published since July 12 (the last one was published on the 9th and indexed yesterday). Normally I've seen then set up with 24 hours, occasionally in 48, but now it's 8 days and not done!!??
