I started a Pinterest account about two years ago. I pinned some of my hubs, without much hope of getting anything out of it. Now Pinterest is running a close second to Google in my traffic sources. Have you tried Pinterest, and have you had success with it?

Pinterest has been a good source of traffic for me.
I wish I could say it has been "great".

Pinterest is a great source for views.

At first I didn't think Pinterest was working for me in terms of getting traffic to my articles, but I've found at some point I started getting regular traffic from my pins. The big bursts of traffic, though, usually comes from Facebook, and recently a good amount from Reddit, but those are actually from articles I never shared on social media (other people found them and shared them). Pinterest is interesting because it seems those pins can float around for awhile and so bring in regular traffic.

    I love Pinterest too!

I think using MFP images, I have, (at a guess), 200,000 or so pins to my hubs there. On this account, I've had 931,656 visits from Pinterest over all time - but Google is still above that (for now).

Yep, Pinterest delivers half of my traffic and creates some lovely viral spikes.

That's good news, Sherry. Although I have hubs getting pinned weekly, I have not seen anything like what you and the others are experiencing. I hope to get there one day. It also may not help that I'm not very active on Pinterest. Do you visit a lot?

    1. WryLilt profile image88
WryLiltposted 9 years agoin reply to this

Personally I almost never visit. I can't remember the last time I pinned to my main Pinterest account. Most of the pins that go viral are direct from my hubs.

I only stop on Pinterest a couple of times a week. I pin my hubs when they are new, and I occasionally repin other stuff that I like, but I am not excessively active. I agree with WryLilt about the MFP images, but a really compelling image can be effective too.

It really seems to be growing organically. It didn't happen fast, but it keeps growing.

I've pinned a few of mine, but I rarely visit Pinterest anymore; I found it to be a huge time-suck.

Also, word was that HP got "banned" from Pinterest twice, I think, for people 'over-pinning.'  I believe that was what I understood. (Basically spamming the site.)
Word is/was that you are supposed to pin others stuff at about a 10:1 ratio to your own.

I have pinned a lot more of others' work than I have of mine, but it is not a significant source of traffic for me.

What exactly do you pin - an entire article or just a picture?

    1. WryLilt profile image88
WryLiltposted 9 years agoin reply to this

Pinterest is like a virtual bookmarking service.

You "pin" an image to Pinterest, but that image is a link back to the original article you pinned it from. They're connected. Go click any image on Pinterest, you'll see what I mean.

You also pin to Boards that have names. Those Board Titles appear in Google searchers. People who like your images, pin them in their own boards and so you get a network of links. The key is fabulous high quality images that people find irresistible. I personally don't put text on mine as I think it detracts from the value of the image itself, but others do.

This image has over 100,000 pins. I'm definitely in the "Text = Traffic" camp!

That said, images that are self explanatory don't need text - for instance many recipes. In my case though, most of my topics are niche so need to be identified specifically with text to grab attention. Not as many people read descriptions it seems.

Did you pin your article images yourself or did it happen "organically"

WryLiltposted 9 years agoin reply to this

About 400 happened from my pin. All the others happened organically (direct from the hub). I've found organic pins add up a lot faster than my measly pins.

I have some organic traffic - that's why I'm interested.

I'm slightly put off Pinterest, purely because I can't seem to access it on my iPad without downloading the App (I'd rather not). But I guess if people are using it and can access it, it could be a great source!

Pinterest is an amazing traffic source for me.  I create graphics that are pin friendly and it's mostly other people that share them.  For my niche blogs I have custom boards where I pin a myriad of things and it has brought me good traffic there as well.  Pinterest boards are SEO friendly - create a good board with a great title and pin to it regularly (NOT just your own stuff, but good high-quality pins) and you'll get a lot of followers and search engine traffic to those boards.  Then, when you do a new blog post or hub on that topic pin it.  I love Pinterest.  I spend much more time with it than wasting my time with Twitter etc.

Interesting. I just got done reading a blog post about how to use Pinterest. Like most social media, I don't quite get the point of it.

Pinterest is presently my #3 traffic source on this account, behind Google and referrals from my account itself. However, I haven't a blessed clue as to why my images get pinned or even how Pinterest works. I am happy about it though, and grateful for whoever is sharing my stuff.

I have been trying to create more shareable images on this account and others to stimulate pinning. I guess that's smart, right?

Yes, I have gotten some good traffic from Pinterest, but my most productive social media platform is Twitter.

Yet you don't have your Twitter link on your profile! I tracked you down and followed though. big_smile I'm working on building up Twitter as my top traffic source but even with the help of Empire Avenue, it's still not half as good as Pinterest.

It's a great way to put journalistic skills to use - saying things quickly and to the point. I use Tweepi to get very targeted followers and regularly tweet thoughts, quotes and content.

I couldn't figure out what MFP images were, so I googled "mfp images pinterest"....and the first item that came up was your Hubpages article, Wrylilt, "How to Generate Traffic Using Made for Pinterest (MFP) Images".   I will go take a look!

Pinterest traffic is my second biggest source of traffic to my Hubs, after Google.

-I get e-mails from Pinterest almost daily, telling me "so-and-so liked your pin," or so-and-so re-pinned your pin.."  etc..  But with only one or two exceptions, every one of those are things I've pinned from various places, both here and elsewhere online, of others' things.

My movie review about Lincoln is about the only one of my own hubs that gets any attention, and it really is not driving any traffic to me at all.

I don't bother with it much anymore.

HubPages.  Last five months.  Pinterest visits.... 11

My site.  Same period.  Pinterest visits... 1

Looks like my brand reimagining into a socially energetic and vibrant corporate profile is not quite working.

This is interesting. I haven't used my account in a along time. Let me run an "experiment" and see how it goes. Thank you for sharing this idea!

I get almost as many views via Pinterest as from Google. Last 30 days: Pinterest 191, Google (all countries) 230. Views via Hub Pages is much more than either.

I've had 1113 visits via Pinterest in the last 30 days. Nothing I'll get rich on, but growing.
