Hi, all
Unfortunately, I have fallen victim to a hacker, fraudster or whatever you want to call them getting in to my PayPal account. They requested a fairly substantial transfer of funds from my account to another country.
To their great credit, PayPal identified the likelihood of fraud almost immediately but I have had to cancel my credit card, debit card and have my business account monitored, in the uncertain knowledge of how much information the fraudster managed to obtain. This is because I get paid via PayPal from my income sources in other countries.
The reason for this post is to advise those of you with PayPal accounts of two requirements PayPal suggest as a safety measure on accounts that I was entirely unaware of:
1) The password for your PayPal account should never be used on any other website.
2) The password on your PayPal account should be changed monthly.
I hope that this information helps others avoid the untold inconvenience I've experienced over the last ten days or so.
Harsh, Gordon - at least it was only inconvenience and not money.
Thanks for sharing that - it might help somebody else.
I was told that all financial transaction sites should have the passwords changed every week. That was for Paypal visa Internet Banking. Anyone hacking into my computer will have problems with their own. It's just annoying.
Thanks so much for sharing so that we can learn from your experience. I'm just glad that they didn't actually pilfer any of your funds!! Maddening!
Thanks for the tip, and I'm very sorry to hear about your troubles.
Thanks for sharing, Gordon. I never thought to change my password monthly. I appreciate your post and am sorry for your inconvenience.
watch out for emails from paypal. as they may not be from paypal.
one trick people do is send you an exact copy template of a paypal email and ask you to confirm your details. you click the link and it takes you to a website "www.paypal.support.com"
this looks like paypal but in fact this website is named support.com with a subdomain of paypal. people see paypal next to www and they assume it is paypal.
If this gives you dayjarvoo and you actually give your details away then you need to let paypal know. tell them you feel your paypal account may have been compromised and can they check the logs for your account.
Gordon, great that paypal picked up so quickly, could have been much worse. I guess having all this easy transaction business just makes it easier for criminals too. I think you are supposed to change all passwords every once in a while
Last year someone charged three ladders to my paypal account and I had to go through the same process that Gordon just went through. Yes keep changing your password as is suggested. The only email that Paypal will or should be sending you is if you got a payment or something was taken out of your account or if you requested a paypal change in password---nothing else. Anything else that seems like it comes from them you can copy and paste it and send it to their fraudulent department. I have done so three times and they appreciated it all three times. It is the one way that they can keep track of whom is getting into your account. This reminds me to reset my password tomorrow morning!
I have found that if Paypal contacts you in your email, don't respond to it. Only log on to the site with your information and not through any link. Hackers are very smart.
The e-mail I was referring to you cannot respond to them, they ae just notices. You have to go to your paypal account to check them out or do anything with your account.
I don't know if it would have helped or not, but PayPal has the security key you can get for a small fee (I paid $5 a while back). It's said to be "an extra measure of security" because the code changes every few seconds, and only you have the latest one.
I got an email once from Paypal support about some payment for repairs to a truck. Not owning a truck, or living in the country where the truck was being repaired I queried it through Paypal's site, and they confirmed my fears, that it was hacker spam trying to get my personal info.
Grateful for the warning. I only ever use my own link to paypal and am about to change my password. Glad you weren't ripped off.

I tried calling the phone number on the website, but it doesn't work. I've looked through the forums but cannot find a way to resolve this. Suggestions? Thanks.
