I was looking at my google analytic stuff for a hub that is a top performer for getting traffic. One keyword was one of those long tail ones, and had nothing to do with this hub! What does a torn ligament have to do with swimming pools!
I got to thinking this keyword might just be one of those long tail keyword thingies I have heard about . I tried it in google keyword tool and it had no results but the fact that it has gotten my other hub views must mean its being searched for and when doing a straight google search the hits for websites is pretty small.
I don't know a huge amount about long tail keywords and am wondering if the keyword tool is not as useful in analyzing a long tail keyword but might be useful for additional sub keywords?
What have you guys experienced when using a long tail keyword for your hub url etc.?
What you are seeing in analytics is keywords used to search that led someone to your page..what it doesn't tell you is that they probably used that search term, found another hubpage and then browsed from that page to yours. Analytics starts tracking the instant someone uses a google search and doesn't stop until they close the browser so they may search purple elephants and somewhere from the search to the page that has purple elephants they may find a link to your page about swimming pools and before you know it there are purple elephants swimming in your pools on hubpages.

In google analytics the page views was 20 views and for unique views its 17. Funny thing is out of close to 200 keywords that have been hit on this one has the highest number, the rest are like 1 and 2 for both. Very weird I think

When someone does a search for a certain word or phrase they then navigate to the a site that comes up in the SERP's. While on that domain, if they navigate to another page, the term that got them there first is registered as the entry point term. So, if someone searched for "cherry pie recipes" and found a hub then followed a link in the comments to another my hub on Prime Rib, my GA would show register a hit with the entry term "cherry pie recipes."
Like sunforged pointed out, if there are many GA hits for the same term then that is something out of my realm...lol
live with richards explanation is the most likely answer for this situation, i was hinting at setting a minimum guideline before concerning yourself with any search query, I optimize ALOT based on long tails that I find in my GA account but considering the thousands of keywords I have to look through there def has to be a level before I would ever give that long tail a second glance
Google usually uses an algorithm to calculate which site should be in the results page for the searched keyword. Sometimes they use LSI (Latent Semantic Analysis) to match phrases that are close together.
Usually long tail keywords are easier to rank for and from there you can try to rank for shorter keywords implicit in long one.
for example, if already rank for divorce law firm in Los Angeles, California it will be much easier to rank for law firm in Los Angeles in the future and maybe for divorce law firm.
It all depends on the efforts you put in to rank for the keywords in order to rank for more than one.
I say make a hub about that long tail keyword and link your swimming pool hub to it, that would probably boost both of your hubs up in the engines and give you a better conversion rate.
