What is the competition to Hubpages?

I'm not trying to be disloyal to Hubpages - far from it - but I have a specific request about its competitors.

I am currently writing an article for a professional newsletter aimed at my fellow librarians, a profession which is getting into a tiswas about its public image. I wish to encourage librarians to be be more outgoing and to tell the outside world more about what they do and how their efforts can be of benefit to their fellow citizens. I see sites such as Hubpages as an excellent platform for making contact and getting the message across.

My article will compare and contrast the two systems known to me that encourage article writing and provide a potential worldwide audience, namely Hugpages and Helium, but I know that there are others. I won't have the space to do more than just mention them by name, but I would like to know those names and their URLs, so that they can be listed.

I am therefore asking for this information from you. Thanks.

RSS is their competitor. One well managed blog on paid hosting with a very good rss feed that is well promoted.

I think it's most frequently compared to Squidoo. darkside and relache both have some excellent hubs/lenses comparing the two services.

I would also say that blogs, especially hosted blog services, are competitors if you are looking primarily for outreach, though blogs are arguably more work to maintain. There are some really excellent librarian blogs out there - http://yalibrarian.com/, http://www.popgoesthelibrary.com/, etc, etc, etc - including some that focus on the so-called Library 2.0: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Library_2.0

I have made a comparison between Hubpages and Blogger here:
      http://hubpages.com/hub/Why-switch-to-hubpages

As such I don't think Blogs really compete with Hubpages, they are rather complementary. I use both.

Squidoo is more like hubpages than helium is - squidoo  you can write on any topic and take your article down at any time - I believe that with helium its more focussed on fiction and you can not withdraw an article once acepted  Gather.com is similar to hubpages too though I havent used it yet.
Then there are sites like about.com which have a moderator per a topic

Yeah I agree that Squidoo is more like Hubpages or rather the other way round since Squidoo was created before Hubpages. In fact if I remembered well after launch announcement, commentators on tech blog immediately refered to Squidoo as model.

The reason is they are between blogs and social networks, whereas Helium is more traditional.

Helium posts many different article topics, fiction is just a very small part of their channels (subjects).  It is true that you can never get your articles removed from Helium, EVER, unless the article violates their TOS.  I have some captive there, but it's not bad - I link to them from my website to use as part of my online clips collection.  I use to procure work.

Squidoo and Helium certainly look like the main competitors, and thanks to Lissie for mentioning gather.com, which is a new one to me. Darkside's hub seems to cover all the bases re. that comparison. Any more that anyone can think of?

I guess Misha can give me a referral link for qassia huh? I've found this on their website:
"Released on January 4, 2008, Qassia is currently in closed beta. That means, you can sign up and view intel if you were referred by someone who is already a member. The search function is not available to the general public."

LOL Lissie was faster smile You actually earn "qassia dollars" for referring people...

I have a Content Provider account with Associated Content too, got hooked up with them about two and a half years ago, but only contributed a handful of articles because I just don't like the way they're set up.

It's funny, right about the time I started looking at AC again and gearing up some stuff to shoot their way, I found hubpages, and I was so impressed with the way it's set up (and the level of control! YES!) that I just decided to work within Hubpages instead.

Also: Does DeviantArt count as a competitor? It doesn't generate revenue for the artists, and it's mostly "Art" (not writing art, haha) but I know a whole bunch of writers use it as a place to showcase their stuff.

Any helium user here? I've just visit the page. They mentioned that Rating will be fair and democratic. They said that you can't ask your friend to rate, what's that mean? how would they know who's my friends? heheheehheehe.... I am not heading over, I still love hubpages the best. But I just check that out and was just curious how they can make that claim.

Vietnamese, you'll find a Qassia link from Lissie on the forums here somewhere!

I don't recommend you join Helium and I've written a Hub to explain why.

Gee some days I just have to be self-promotional : qassia link: http://lissie.qassia.com/

Qassia is very new - still in beta : its a bit of a punt (chance, risk) - but  its easy to write short articles and the idea is that you get backlinks to your promoted website or hubpage

Thanks, Lissie! What's the $1275 in your profile? Some type of assets? Is that something you put in or that's something you make a day....hehehehheehe..... would it be nice if that's something you made a day?

It might be Vietnamese dong (ROTFL!).  Nah is Qassia $ - you earn them by referring people (make sure you click on the email you get from them big_smile), but also from submitting "intel" which are short articles and also rating other peoples intel.  I  think  more Q$ give me a "better" backlink - but I don't really know what that means: lets just say their value is probably closer to the dong than the $ !

    vietnameseposted 16 years ago

Hahahaha.... in that case you got many dongs then!

Lissie, Qassia looks like it could be the next best thing! I think I like it.... Well, I think only... because they are still in beta phase. I expect great things coming out of that site soon. It could be a marketing gold mine. Thanks again!

Nice job with the referral, Lissie!  I noticed you on Qassia the other day.  I just joined last week too.  Good luck vietnamese.

Yes, thank you! I haven't put anything on there yet, I'll do that whenever I have more times.
