Who was the first person you acknowledged as being gay or lesbian?  And, how old were you?

For me, it was Elton John.  I was somewhere between 10-12 years old, but can't remember who told me.

I don't mind people being gay, but your sister trying to turn you, and you were so young, that's a little, like, bad, for you, yknow, Justine, how did you react???   Weren't your puzzled as all get out...

Well...there was also a guy in high school, he was picked on because he liked to wear nail polish when he was young.  I didn't really know him that well, and I don't really know if he was gay.  Just everyone who knew him when he was young said he was.

One of my Dad's work mates.
Dad told us when we met him that he was gay and that he copped a lot of flack at work for being a "Poofta."

Dad said he was a good bloke, and invited him up for the weekend quite often to get him away from his sad life in a city that still had little tolerance. My mom loved him! He always had time for us kids too.

Even though my dad was bought up in a time of extreme prejudice against gays he would have no part of it.

I am grateful for my dad's attitude. We kids are all hetro, but none of us care what anyone's sexuality is. smile

smile if everyone could just be comfortable with who they are, and not worry so much about who everyone else is...

That's a good point Justine76. Being comfortable with oneself, why care or be concerned with other peoples sexuality? I don't really get it.
When I do talk with my homosexual friends about their lives I see they have exactly the same stuff going on in their lives as I have. Relationships with family, friends and associates, bills to pay, often problems with their children etc.

I have seen that travel and social intercourse allow us to see through many stereotypes if we have an open mind to learning and are "grown ups" morally. smile

Ive had a few very very very good "gay" friends. They are just people. They want to be loved. I have never once had someone try to "convert" me. Becuase to be "converted" would mean its a choice. They did not care what I did in bed, and had no desire to tell me what they did. I have however, been raped by a nice christain straight boy.

Oh yeah, there were these two that worked in the Customer Service Center in an office where I worked.  They were both sooo good looking, but, they only had eyes for each other.  This was about 12 years ago.  I would say they were stereotypical...kinda feminine in their speech and mannerisms.  When they broke up, one left the company and the other was sad for the longest time - I believe he ended up leaving before finding another bf.
