A newbie report

Everybody is posting goals, but they are way, way beyond me.  I've only been hubbing for about 2 weeks (though I wrote two pitiful ones before that and posted a little in the forums) but the results really excite me.

15 hubs (including the early bird pair) have produced over 700 views to date - it will cross 1000 this weekend, I'm sure.

Google has sent 58 people to me, and it's beginning to climb rapidly.

Google page impressions are well over 200.

I have at least one hub on google's page 1; though position 9, I'm still amazed.

I'm just beginning to get click through's - they WILL grow!

Newbies, you can take heart - I haven't even earned a penny yet, but it seems to me that these are all indications that it's coming, and perhaps faster than I had thought possible (I tell my wife an absolute minimum of 6 months for earnings, let alone payout).  It's also heartening to think that my writing must be of at least some value to people all over the world - foreign hits are also increasing.

Good for you Wilderness.  It does take time and commitment for success (whatever that means to you).

Of course it does!  And I find that these little successes, or indications of future successes, help keep that commitment.  They are not really much, but they give an indication that more may happen if I continue.

Having a hub on the first page of Google will benefit you a lot, well done!

That is debatable. First page for what? I could get on the Google first page right now for the term 'How To Weigh Your Poop' but nobody would search for it...

Absolutely correct.  "decreasing intelligence" results in 4,600,000 results of which #9 was mine.

darksideposted 14 years agoin reply to this

The number of results don't tell the whole story.

As a broad term there are 110 searches done a month on Google with those two words in it. As for people typing in the exact term decreasing intelligence there is "Not Enough Data" which effectively means 0.

          1. wilderness profile image96
wildernessposted 14 years agoin reply to this

Huh!  You're absolutely right about the 100 searches.  Not sure what you mean by the "not enough data", though - that search did produce a bunch of results.

In any case, I did no keyword research at all when I wrote it; I'd not even heard of such a thing.  It was just kind of neat to find me there by searching a title, even if I hadn't meant it to be search for.

When you go to https://adwords.google.com/select/Keywo … egacy=true and do a search, when the results come up find where it says "Match Type:" and change "Broad" to "Exact".

That will give you stats on what people are actually searching for.

"Broad" is handy for doing keyword research and getting clues for finding phrases that people are searching for, but to really nail it down to exactly how many people are searching for a specific keyword term, you'll need to change it to "Exact".

Also be sure to click on the drop down box for "Choose columns to be displayed:" and select "Show Estimated Average CPC".

Between that and the search volume a person can get a good idea of whether or not to target a particular keyword or keyword phrase.

There are different ways to interpret the data. Huge amounts of traffic are going to be far more competitive, so sometimes the numbers being low can mean its easier to get onto the first page of results.

But if it says Not Enough Data or the Estimated Average CPC is US$0.05 then I don't invest my time or effort in trying to target it, because there's virtually no chance of me making money no matter how successful I am in accomplishing that number 1 spot.

I think that one of my problems with keyword search is that I do not seem to use the same google keyword tool that others are referring to.  It appears that I use this:  [url]https://adwords.google.com/o/Targeting/Explorer?__u=1000000000&__c=1000000000&stylePrefOverride=2#search.none!ideaType=KEYWORD&requestType=IDEAS  while everyone else seems to use one limited to an adwords account.

Without such an account I cannot seem to access much of the information that you do, and when I started to get that account I decided it was aimed at people with their own website and cost $ to have.  It just didn't seem to be of any value to me except for the upgraded version of the keyword tool, and I didn't proceed any further, opting to stick with the free one.

I do think I'm doing much better now with keywords; I use the tool I have and get more and better ideas of what to target.  When possible I look for high search rates with low competition, although there have a couple times I couldn't seem to come up with much that appeared really relevant and took lower search volume words as necessary.  Time will tell my better researched hubs are only a few days old yet.

I do appreciate your comment, though - every little bit helps as I gradually build an understanding of what works and what doesn't.

Yep - exciting to me!  Of course it was my first and oldest with almost no commercial value, but exciting anyway.  It's still mostly a learning experience for me - I just don't know enough yet.  Although someone reported I had a #1 position in Australia the other day, and it was far more commercial.

I was excited to have one of my hubs on the front page (not featured, just on the front page under pets)

Well, maybe I just simple, but that just seems pretty neat to me.  It's exciting and gives me a kick to do something more.

I'm most impressed by your hubber score! The highest I've gotten is 90 and that was very short lived.

And I never even noticed it and don't understand why it is what it is.  Sigh - more learning to do.  lol

Cagsil, Aevans, Thanks for the encouragement.  I have no intention of stopping now.  But mostly the OP was for the newbies; just that the old timers like yourselves are not the only ones to have successes.

We newbies success stories are not as great, but they are there, too - we just need to look a little harder to find them perhaps.  Any improvement is an encouragement - not just the goals that take months and years to accomplish.

    Thanks again.

Good job! I think you're way ahead of where I was at that stage. It wasn't till about month 2-3 I did a 30 day hub challenge and started churning out the hubs. Keep it up and remember - the more hubs you have the more earning potential you have (Unless you're like misha and make $2000/month off twenty hubs!)

      1. wilderness profile image96
wildernessposted 14 years agoin reply to this

I set a semi-goal of a hub a day.  I know I won't make that goal for too long - I will be too busy shortly for a while, but for it's working.

And if I understood Misha in a recent post it was a month's worth at $100 a day for just one hub!  That's a ways off yet for me.

        Thanks for the encouragement.

I am only five days old. Though my google and yahoo views are not very encouraging at the moment, I have already got a sale of $99.99
today. I guess i should earn some $4 plus for it. That is definitely a motivation for me.

Wow!  I think I better take lessons from you!  Way to go!

And you're sure right - it may sound silly, but a $4 earnings really IS a motivator.  At least to us, on the bottom of the heap for now.

Wow, that's really good. I've been here two months and haven't made any money yet. But I'm looking to invest my time over the long term. Congrats on the quick sale.!

    Wilderness,

You are doing very well.  Your hubrank is 95, far ahead than most hubbers.  It sure will take time to see some income.  Good luck and have fun.

https://adwords.google.com/select/Keywo … egacy=true is the old version of the keyword tool and most of us find it easier and quicker to use. You should be able to access it without having an account or having credit in an account, I have an Adwords account but I've never used it, don't have any money in it, and I don't log in while using the tool.

If it times out (if you've had it sitting idle for a while in a separate tab or browser page) just refresh the page.
