I spent quite a while collecting some public domain photos that I thought I could use for my subjects of interest. I burned them to a disc, and I'm able to view them in my documents as well as off the disc. When I tried to upload them to my Hub most were not there from the Hubpages options to upload screen. Does anyone have a clue about this. The seem to be the correct format. I even tired to paste them, but to no avail. Thanks.......
Are you using the photo capsule?
edit: And did you tell it to go to drive D: or F: or whatever?
Yes, used the photo capsule. It shows the drive and only about a dozen of the photos on it, but many are not there. They are all show up on my pictures and just viewing the disc.
What are the extensions of the non-show pics?
I don't think the extension would be anything special, it is a type of encoding inside the image.
I think the watermark thing is a red herring...
Let's find out what extensions are involved...
Digitally watermarked (protected) photos may not show up. Such watermarks may not be visible to the naked eye. If they are in the public domain, why would they be watermarked? Well, that supposedly would depend on the source - anyone could have added the watermarks while editing the photos. Not saying that is what has happened here, merely for your general information.
There is no such thing as public domain photos. Every picture, word and page on the net belongs to someone.
Do you mean you went to a site that specifically said they had royalty free pictures for anyone to use? It does not sound like it.
Also, sounds like many of those are .bitmap and/or .png and/or .gif pictures. I think you have to use .jpg images.
Oh yes, there is! Photos whose copyright has expired are in the public domain. Also, still images of paintings etc. whose copyright has expired are in the public domain. Put differently, a mere mechanical reproduction (via photo) of a public domain image does not generate a new copyright, so the photo is in the public domain also.
Sorry, not true. As soon as you take a picture you are the copyright owner. That copyright never, ever runs out. You also don't have to "get" a copyright; you are the copyright owner as soon as you take the picture.
I have thousands of pictures on the web and I never copyright them. I don't have to, as the producer of the picture I am the copyright holder. I can use a DMAC notice on any site with my picture.
Here's another take. Say I make a hub. It's MY hub and I own the rights to it, it never runs out. Think you can copy a hub after the copyright runs out? No, same is true with anything on the web.
Um, no. Copyright on photographs and all other works expires. Also photos may be work for hire by a civil servant, thus not copyright at all.
I'd love to see a link to that rule, never heard of it. So what about hubs, do they expire so anyone can use them?
http://www.copyright.gov/
"Copyright in a work created on or after January 1, 1978, subsists from its creation and, except as provided by the following subsections, endures for a term consisting of the life of the author and 70 years after the author's death."
And.... yes. But you'll be dead then and so probably not too bothered.
A creator can also, of course, surrender copyright and choose to allow their work to be used freely.
By one method or another there are a lot of non-copyright pictures.
Isn't it something like the life of the author/owner PLUS another 70 to 95 years? And that's only for works published after 1978. For works published before that, I think it's like for the life of the author plus another 95 to 120 years--something like that.
There are specific legal provisions with which you are seemingly not familiar. One of us is not a lawyer, no disrespect intended.
Wikimedia Commons has many photos that expressly state that they are in the public domain, and that for reasons previously stated.
I believe they were jpg. They are public domain pictures. It advertises that you can use them as you wish, even commercially. I guess the only answer is, to take your own pictures...........
Ok, if they said you can use them then that is fine. Not sure why they don't show,,, sorry.
I agree. The most likely explanation is that the window is showing only a certain picture type like jpg, and not displaying others like gif or bmp. When you open the window check whether it is shwoign all file types.
Hmmm, I looked it up in a few sites and both Website Examiner and psycheskinner are right, my apologizes.
Having said that, it also made it clear that anything I take is copyrighted until I die, so I'm not going to worry about my own work.
What gets me is how many just use Google search and assume any and all images they see are ok to use, when in fact most of them are not.
So, image copyrights DO expire, but nobody has to worry about that for their own images, unless you voluntarily give it up,,,, so to speak!
To add to the confusion, certain rights - "moral rights" ("droit morale") - never expire, including the right to be recognized as the author of a work, and for the artists' name not to be used in a defamatory way. It is a complicated area indeed.
Lots of people put up photos to share as public domain. I have some up on a site myself. I have used so many photos that other folks share, I thought to share some myself.
Hey fellow hubbers,
Figured it out. Some of those pix were bitmap. I took a picture of those I wanted on my new hub and changed the format. It worked. Now I have a new problem. How do I get these photos off my pictures in the capsule? Tried to delete them and I can't figure out how. Surely, there must be a way to start fresh for each new hub.
You can delete photos permanently from your collection by clicking on My Photos in the control panel. Here, you will also be able to upload photos in batches, create albums etc. You can delete individual photos from a capsule by clicking on the appropriate icon. You can also delete photo capsules, then create new ones instead.

when I upload pictures to my hubs, the last several that I have uploaded only show broken links instead of the actual pictures. I already tried going in and re-uploading the pictures but I can't get it to work. anybody know what to do? I don't know if it's a website glitch or not?

I posted a new Hub this morning which included an Amazon capsule with 8 or 9 related items in it. However when I went back to look it over after publishing, the Amazon capsule was not showing up, there's just a blank space where it should be.When I went into "edit" mode I can see the...

I've noticed yesterday and again today that pictures are not showing up on hubs. I'm in the middle of writing a hub myself and the picture just keeps saying loading.

I check out many of the new hubs as they come across my Home page. I'm interested to see how many people use their own original work, how many correctly use and credit public domain photos, and how many are outright stealing photos from the Internet. When someone posts a professional looking photo...
