Trouble with RSS feeds

A while back someone posted another method of using tags to make RSS feeds, and today I tried it out on 3 different hubs.  The format used was: ht tp://hubpages.com/author/authors name/tag/latest?rss
and it gives a feed with that tag but only from that author.

The feature works fine on all three hubs when I preview the feed, but when published it "appears to be an invalid RSS feed".

    Any thoughts?

Hi wilderness The only thing I can think of because I was having trouble last night with the same problem. I think I just changed it to hot and then let it sit for a couple hours although latest should work too. I had added the tag to one of hubs and if you remember it takes a little to register the tag in the rss. either that or I just scratched the whole thing and added link capsule. I was really tired so I don't really remember I'm not much help but I thought I would let you know I had the problem too. Give them 2-3 hours to update if that doesn't work then we have a problem I think its a matter of time. Post back if it works thanks. I will be using this more often also with related hubs> If i get a second I will try it now.

Ok well it just worked on already published hubs. If you are trying to do this on a newly publish hub give it a couple hours as long as it worked in preview you should be all set. Check back on it later. :smile happy hubbing

It's bedtime for me - I'll check it tomorrow.

I know it can take some time for HP to register the tags and such, but the feed worked fine when I tested it.  It didn't pick up the latest hub, as expected, but the older ones showed up.  It just didn't work outside the edit screen.

    Thanks for the reply.

Well, it's been nearly 24 hours and the feed still doesn't work except in edit preview mode.

Wow this is hard to diagnose. Check the URL again and try another tag. Add a new capsule jeez I don't know what else to tell you. Except you would have to paste the URL here for a second set of eyes to look at it and make sure the other hubs tags are spelled the same hmmmmm scatching my head

Even if the tags were wrong it would simply be a blank capsule, not an "invalid rss feed".

The think I don't get is that the preview function in the capsule works and the feed shows all the relevant hubs.  They just don't work after saving the hub!

    HubPages'com/author/your-hp-name/ipad/best?rss
    ht tp://hubpages.com/author/authors name/tag/latest?rss

The second way is how it is done that way. (I saved that from a recent post)

or of course you may have meant ht tp://hubpages.com/tag/best?rss

    Hmmm...it's late! That's my excuse.

Izzy, your second example, starting with ht tp, is what I used.  I even pulled up my little notepad file and compared it.

It baffles me that it works fine on the preview but not after saving.  If I had done something wrong, spelling, exact format, etc. the preview wouldn't work either.  Or at least I don't think it would!

If you want to use a tag for an RSS feed, it's:

    ht tp://hubpages.com/tag/TagName/hot/?rss

You can substitute "best" or "latest" for "hot" -- although I've had trouble at times getting anything to come up unless I used "hot."

If you want to create a custom RSS feed using tags, just use a very unique tag for the hubs you want in the feed. So let's say you tag 10 of your hubs with a tag "XYZ," the feed then becomes:

    ht tp://hubpages.com/tag/xyz/hot/?rss

    Hope this helps!

(Oh, and you do need to wait up to an hour to get your custom tags and feed all working together.)

I've been doing that, Irohner, and I always use "latest" as I usually have textual links for older hubs.

Someone posted a method to do it with normal tags instead of weird virtual nonsense tags that are unique.  And it works, too, picking up only hubs from a particular author that also have that particular tag.  I just can't make it work in a hub!

Where have you got this rss feed? Could it be that it is actually working but that your browser isn't letting you see it? Post a link.

I'm not sure wilderness It is working for me.

    Got it!

This was on a different account, with an author name such as "doggy doo".  doggy doo did not work as the author name, and neither did doggy_doo, but doggy+doo does.

Thanks for the help, folks.  I think it's solved now; all three hubs are showing fine during both preview and after saving.

Woodsmen; I see that the learning center notes what I took 2 evenings to find out.  I never thought to check there as it came up in the forums as a discovery.

Yes and Maddie was watching and informed us it was now in the learning center. I knew if we tried hard enough we would narrow it down thats why I wanted to see the url. Privacy respected smile wilderness glad you got it WP

Kind of an odd little glitch in the programming, though, that it works only in preview without the "+" sign.  If it hadn't been for that I'd probably have found it much sooner as I've used it before and know it works, but that really threw me.

Thanks for your patience, Woodsmen; this is my primary account and the one I like best.  The other one I use just for prostituting myself to the gods of Amazon and would keep the shame to myself. big_smile

My first experience with the vagaries and problems of multiple accounts.  It won't be the last.
