      Write useful hubs and also participate in the forums and the answers section. Also, leave relevant comments on other people's hubs. Finally, when you choose to follow a fellow hubber they will often reciprocate and follow you, but please don't ask them to follow you. I find that very annoying.

   Don't worry about followers.
   
   If you write useful and good stuff that people are searching for you will automatically have readers and followers. Following people just to get followers is frowned upon by HP.
   
   Most followers don't read your hubs, they are just playing the follow the leader game..
   
   So keep your eyes on your goal i.e. writing good /great hubs and you will reap the fruits.. not just followers but you would also earn a few dollars in the process

      Sofs has some great words of wisdom here! The following people just to get followers is really annoying. Any time I get a new follower, I take a look at their profile. If they've followed several other hubbers in a short span of time then I get pretty irritated.
      
      I want followers who follow me because they enjoy reading my work... I'd rather have three followers like that than 300 followers trying to play the follow-you-you-follow-me game.

         Words of wisdom indeed!  I won't follow anyone I don't enjoy reading.  If I do follow it is rare that I don't read (and usually comment) when they publish.  Don't play the "I follow you, you follow me" game.  HP doesn't like it and it's a waste of time.
         
         I have 400 followers.  I published a new hub 1 week ago - it has received 8 HP visitors.  Given that 7 of those were probably hub hoppers (and probably flagging me! ) and the 8th a mistaken click what happened to the 400 followers that so love my stuff?

   Followers? That's a cool question, but i would say, followers comes when your hub is great, and try as much as possible to read fellow hubbers work, comment on the ones that worth commenting on, participate very well in the forum section by doing all this you can get series of readers and when readers like you hub the would want to be the first to know when you publish another one.    Depending on what you write about you may struggle to find followers in hubpages- especially if you write about specialist niches.
   
   Search engine traffic is what many people on here are looking for and that's how you'll most likely make money (if that's your purpose for being here)

    Just write hubs as best you can and be a passionate writer and join in with everyone and you will get fans. What you get out of Hub Pages depends on what you put into hub Pages. Give and take...

       I agree with Astra...if you have a passion for writing, and you write good, quality hubs, visitors will find you, comment on your nice hubs and may follow you because they are interested in seeing more of your hubs.
       
       When you like a hub and post a positive comment, the hubber may thank you by following you, or he or she may post a comment on your hub if they like it. If someone comments on your hub or sends you fan mail, I think it's nice to visit their hubs and comment on hubs you might like, and you may also decide to follow them too.
       
       I agree that it's not good etiquette to ask someone to follow you.

    I totally agree with Astra. Don't just click on everyone to follow unless you intend to leave a comment to one of their hubs, that way you will have better luck at being followed yourself. Write a few interesting hubs yourself to get the ball rolling and once you get comments make sure you reply in like form and go visit the commenter and leave a comment back on their Hub. Good luck, have fun and enjoy the site. Now go start writing.

    Write quality content that others will find interesting. Read other hubs and leave relevant comments.
    
    Don't just follow someone with the hopes of being followed. Only follow hubbers you are genuinely interested in following. As most of my friends already stated, participate in forums and ask and answer questions.
    
    One more advice, don't overdo it. Be moderate in all you do.
