Without a doubt HP and Squidoo are large competitors, and both could learn a thing or two from each other. Since I didn't find a good debat on this topic on the web I will try to start one.

I believe that HP has a lot to learn from Squidoo, and I mean Hubbers as well as Staff. Since most hubbers don't have their own webpage they can't participate in the eBay Partner Network - however, lenstmaster can, even if they don't have their own site.

Which is better Squidoo or HP? Why?

I don't really have a lens on Squidoo. However, I have a lot of hubs and quite a few of them are on the front page of Google. I often use these to link to my site for traffic.

I find both are same.If you want to make money, then you have to work harder and harder..whether you are on Hubpages or Squidoo..

If you type "Squidoo vs HubPages" into the search box here, you'll find a good numbert of people have made Hubs on this topic.

IMO, neither is better, they are rather different but complimentary.

Wouldn't it depend on Alexa rating? I signed up for Squidoo and have read many lenses but am no fan. Have not written there for some time. I sort of hate it. Too much clutter on the pages and lots of lenses are big nothings. (No offense to hubbers who write good lenses over there).

I've tried Squidoo on two separate occasions and I don't like it.
I found it to be hard to navigate and cumbersome.

I signed up for Squidoo  while back, wrote a few things and didn't care for it.  Then a friend told me she's making $150 a month over there are her pottery articles, and I'd lost almost all of my Hubpages earnings, so I went back to Squidoo.  I've been writing something new there every day for about 2 weeks now.  Time will tell. I can't afford to have all my eggs in one basket, so I'll be writing for half a dozen sites at any given time.

I started writing on Squidoo about 8 weeks ago just to not have all my eggs in one basket. The methods are different. It's good for people who like to have the flexibility to design the looks of their lenses themselves. This is possible because they allow HTML in the text modules.  However, I have noticed they have an awful lot of bugs that people just seem to deal with. Things are always breaking. It seems they put new code in without testing first. They are not as professional as HP is. I can appreciate how HP handles things because I come from a systems analyst/manager background and I see no excuse for programming   without testing, as Squidoo does often.

On the plus side, you don't need to have accounts with affiliates to get paid. So newbies who don't have affiliate accounts might find Squiddo a better choice to get started. They collect the money and disperse according to rank. Too soon to tell how well this payment system works for me.

HP is much easier to use for preparing your article, especially complex ones.
The payment system is a mystery and is a disincentive - When will you get paid and how much? The aliens are juvenile and annoying. You can Hug a Hub. Squids are cold a slimy. Many potential users may be put off clicking the links on a search result because of the squid-thingy. I've tried but I'm back.

I looked at Squidoo and wrote two squids about 6 months ago. However, I loathed the whole feel of the place and have not been back. I think any further endeavours outside of HP will focus on my own sites.

I find Squidoo extremely hard to work with.

    Hubpages all the way

Signed up for Squidoo more than a year ago, didn't "get" it, and so I ignored it.  However, I started to spend a bit of time perusing the site, reading lenses, and trying again...it feels more time intensive to me, but my experience since January has been kind of like my first year on HubPages, and my account is starting to earn a little bit.

I am from Squidoo and made a few bucks there. Here's what I like about it:
    - no limits on the links whether you link it to same domain over and over, therefore you can use it to promote your products from Zazzle or Cafepress, or show off your patterns (I mostly publish crochet patterns)
    - does not need a Google Adsense account
    - payment comes after 3 months after the lens is published

    The disadvantages are:
    - payment is based on rank and rank is based not only on "views" but "comments" and  "likes" as well. I have patterns with high views but low number of likes because most of them are strangers and people who likes lenses are usually from Squidoo. So if you don't know a lot of people from Squidoo, your likes will be most likely low. Not very good for a niche squid like me.
-the ultimate goal of Squidoo is to carry a conversation within the lenses. So, if your not very good in invoking a response from strangers, you won't do so well.

I am new to Hubpages and I don't have a Google Adsense yet. I'll just keep my fingers crossed.

Not true.  Squidoo DOES limit outgoing links to the same domain, just not as stringently as HubPages.

I just started writing for Squidoo, and I have mixed feelings about their payment system. In order to earn from the Adsense pool you article has to rank under 80,000. You get paid based on tiers.

Tier 1 = articles ranking in the top 2,000. These lenses earn $36 per month.

    Tier 2 = articles ranking 2,001 - 10,000. These lenses earn %6 per month

    Tier 3 = articles ranking 10,001 - 85,000. These lenses earn $0.33 per month

One problem with their tier system is that they havn't updated it since the start of the site years ago. The site has since grown and now has well over 1.6 million articles posted. So it seems overwhelming to attain a decent rank in such a huge library of articles. They really need to create a fourth tier and adjust the pay out amount accordingly.

I've been a member for 2 months and so far I have 6 articles in the second tier. Five articles in the third tier. And fourteen articles in the non-paying fourth tier.

I personally don't see why Squidoo can't just share ad revenue like Hubpages.

All in all its a good website to make residual income on. If you want to be my first referral i'd appreciate it. http://www.squidoo.com/lensmaster/referral/barrelroll

It's interesting to read people's opinions. I actually like Squidoo better. I find it easier, with the variety of modules, to create a nice looking page of content.

The payment system is a bit confusing but it is nice that you don't have to have your own accounts to earn.

I guess it's just a matter of personal preference.

I have not written for Squidoo but other sites, however, after this thread,  Iam thinking of giving it a go....hate to say it but you know, it never hurts.  Thanks all for sharing your thoughts!

a lot of the answer depends on your goals. I'm not here trying to make money off my hubs. I'm hear for SEO. I want/need the backlinks and juice that hubpages can give my site.
HP requires me to earn a rank of 75 before my links become active. They make it a bit difficult to figure out exactly what you need to do to get that status.

Squidoo makes the links active immediately. Of course they'll make your lenses go inactive if you don't get enough views or update them regularly but at least you get immediate backlinks and that gives you incentive to update etc.

You may wish to read (or re-read) the FAQ and the TOS, as HubPages has been designed specifically to penalize you if you are just here to backlink to your own site.  From what I've seen in the last five years and from having looked over your Hubs, you are here for all the wrong reasons and may find it extremely difficult to near-impossible to get that Author score up to 75.

I agree with Relache's comments as well as knowing that she has been a long time Hubber and Squidder.

Read through each site carefully, each sites terms and conditions and if you are not sure of ALL of the benefits of what each site has to offer, ask people in the forums (both here and there)

I am surprised no-one has mentioned, for example you can earn from Amazon sales as well as with ranking your lenses each month.

Each site offers slightly different aspects which will make some people keen and others not so much.

Don't dismiss either out of hand.

I am here this weekend for the same reason, to figure out why people also write at HP to diversify their "basket." I wrote 22 articles on Squidoo, but then I noticed the stress of lenrankings and won't know my payout figures until mid-Nov. As a newbie, one would earn practically nothing if it's not about making money at Squidoo or party favors or some other badly needed topic that earned high traffic. However, I heard that you have to be here HP for awhile before earning anything. A penny in 5 weeks seems a bit low, and I cannot figure out the value of Hubscore for the individual and the article. Until I know which one will value my articles more, I will toss 2 at Squidoo per one at HP, and I have a Squidoo article keeping track of HP, Squidoo, and RedGage gains to help other newbies.

I know people who have gone back and forth, but I am a newbie, and I want to grow somewhere.

I do find that people actually write at HP, instead of trying to win the most "link"  game. I have read some very heart-felt articles about life at HP.

I personally don't find an article useful if it links to 30 lemon pie recipes, but those are the articles that are considered well written and generate traffic, whereas I try to send people to the official sites (when necessary) and write from my personal experience, especially when my goal is to share what I know.

Here is my Squidoo referral link: <link snipped>, if you want to give it a shot.

I wrote one article on squidoo, but dislike the interface. IMO, HubPages has a superior interface. HubPages is easier for me to navigate - the forums, the hubs, everything...

Most article sites I have written on besides HubPages always seem decent, but my articles barely get any exposure regardless of decent SEO tactics...
