Who are these Spammers?

Sales people

We cannot fully blame those people who are innocently became spammers and annoys other people's lives. They read something online about SMS (short message service also known as text message) marketing strategies or they sales leaders taught them how and then they end up being in the long list of spammers. In the Philippines most of their spammers are offering loans via text message blasting.

Digital Criminals

Most of us receive a text the we won in a lottery or raffle of a reputable public or private institution and we have to call the number of the lawyer to claim our prize. Also, some anonymous number posing as a relative or family from abroad telling them that the number is their new roaming number. Be aware of this messages because they are being sent by criminal syndicates. Never reply or call as you will be their next victim.

Stalkers

They may have seen your mobile number in your facebook account, loading stations or online advertisement and somewhat likes you and they started sending anonymous message asking to be your text mate. You can get rid of them by putting their number in your blacklist.

Political Activist

These is the cheapest way political activist can send their message for change to the vast majority of the public. The Philippine is the texting capital of the world and there is 100 Million Cellphones for its 100 Million Population. Using popular mass media such as TV, radio and print is expensive. While using the internet will only reach around one fifth of the population.

SMS Spamming Methods

1. Radio Broadcast - They have a device that uses radio signal frequency of the cellular sites and blast a message. Those mobile phones in the radius capacity of the device can then received the blasted message. Usually the device will receive a flash message or a message from a NAME of company. This is common in malls and other commercial areas.

2. SMS Blaster Software - They use generated numbers from excel or numbers from the profile databases and load in to the software. This is a common method use by sales people and digital criminals.

3. Telco Networks - Legitimate marketing companies pay telecommunication companies to blast their message to their subscribers. There are also illegitimate ways like hacking the telco companies. This method was commonly use by hackers to send their anonymous messages.

4. Spider Softwares - These are softwares that are capable of detecting data in web pages (classified ads and social networking sites) such as names, email address and telephone numbers.

How to stop spam in mobile phones

Here are the ways we can do in the receiving end is to take necessary precautions on how to minimize or fully prevent spammers accessing our inboxes.

1. Have a dedicated number for business ads

If you are advertising your products and services in the internet it is better that you have a a dedicated mobile number for your online ads separate from your personal numbers. You will also know ahead if that people calling your business number found it on the internet while keeping your personal number safe from anonymous calls and messages.

2. Avoid Using Known Number Series for Postpaid Lines

In the Philippines, telecommunication company Globe has a distinct number for post paid line 0917 8** **** knowing these they can generate the numbers from 0917 800 0000 to 0917 899 999 using excel and text blast them. Most of my friends owning Globe post paid numbers are eternally annoyed by spam messages entering their 24 hours a day. The best way is to avoid using these number series.

3. Do not call or reply to spam messages

The moment you reply or call anonymous messages, the spammer will now know that your number is a "live number". They will know that among hundreds of thousands if not millions of excel generated numbers your number is a live one because you replied. The spammers can excel generate other number series as well aside from the known post-paid series numbers.

4. Do not fill up online forms with your mobile number

Advance spammers use a spider software that harvest mobile numbers online. Specially classified ads sites. Some sites do not have counter measures yet against this spiders that is why the phone number you posted online will be harvested by these spiders. If you cannot avoid posting your mobile number use the number that you dedicate for online ads.

5. Do not fill up offline forms with your mobile number

Most of these forms you filled up for private or government offices ends up in database. Some of their unscrupulous employees in their Information Technology (IT) department sell these database to marketing companies or sales agents. This is also true when you fill up survey forms or raffle tickets with your personal number. After a week or months you will start receiving anonymous calls and messages.

6. Avoid writing your number at loading stations

Loading stations are favorite sources of sales people because they get to build a localized database. The numbers they harvested from these loading stations are from people living or working within the area of which the loading station is located. As much as possible by a load card, or load your phone in outlets that do not require you to write your number down.

7. Turn Off Broadcast Message

There is a message option in your phone to turn on or off broadcast messages. Turn this off if you do not want to be annoyed by broadcast messages. However, phone features are helpful during calamities such massive flooding or typhoon.

8. Unsubscribed to Promos.

From time to time you received message promo alerts from telco companies. Usually there are instructions below the message on how to STOP the promo. Follow this instructions to unsubscribe to the promo and avoid unwanted charges and messages.

9. Set your phone's sleep mode or silent mode schedule

Most of the phone now has a scheduled sleep or silent feature. If you do not want to wake up in the middle of your sleep by unwanted calls or text use this feature. Sometime there will be legitimate emergency calls, the next tip can be helpful.

10. Use SMS & Call Blacklist Software

If you own a smart phone such as iphone or any android phone, there are different sms and call blocking apps available in itunes or android play store. This apps has blacklist features which you can add in numbers from stalkers and telemarketers, or a whitelist feature to allow calls from certain people that you allow to wake you up even if you are sleeping.
