How To Squidoo

Updated on July 8, 2013

What Is Squidoo?

Squidoo is an online website that allows you to create other websites which they call lenses. Anyone who creates a lens is called a lensmaster. Providing quality content is important if you want to be very successful on Squidoo. I want to show you how to use Squidoo for your business and also why you should consider using Squidoo. I have seen a lot of traffic from Squidoo, and Squidoo has made me over $250 in less than 6 months.

I am also a teen on Squidoo who believes that age does not limit success. Anyone young can still succeed online just as I am now. I love to go on Squidoo everyday, and if a teen can do it, then you can do it too. I hope that you enjoy Squidoo just as much as I do.

What Are These Modules

On Squidoo, modules are what make a lens better. Some modules can allow you to provide quality content, Amazon Products, a video, and so much more. Some modules like the Blackbox Module try to make out a super quote that gets the reader's attention. The guestbook Module allows your readers to comment. Whenever they're answering a question or adding their expert advice, you're getting their feedback.

Proper Module Etiquette

If you want a lens that people are going to visit over and over again, then do not under any circumstances put 2 Amazon Modules one under the other. If you do that, you'll be showing 10 different Amazon Products, and then you'll look like a salesman who is trying to take some money. Having only 1 Amazon Module followed by other modules with quality content will give your customer more trust and ultimately makes your lens look better.

Can Squidoo Earn You Money

Yes, Squidoo can earn you money. You can get money from sales, ad clicks, and you can make your own up! Squidoo is my best source of income.

Tiers - What Are They?

Tiers on Squidoo are your key to determine how much you'll earn from ads on Squidoo. There are 4 different Tiers:

  • Tier 1:

    Gets about $50 a month.

    Average monthly lensrank of 1-2,000

  • Tier 2:

Gets close to $10 a month.

    Average monthly lensrank of 2,001-10,000

  • Tier 3:

Gets over $0.50 a month but under $1.

    Average monthly lensrank of 10,001-85,000

  • Tier 4:

    Rarely gets anything

    Average monthly lensrank of 85,001-400,000

  • Everything else is a WIP or a work-in-progress

More Ways Squidoo Can Make Money

Squidoo has special modules that allow you to sell millions of different products of your choice. Squidoo has the Amazon Module, eBay Module, Zazzle Module, Etsy Module. If you want, you could even make up your own method of making money on Squidoo.

Squidoo gives you the wonderful chance of donating to different charities across the world. You don't have do donate every cent to charity, but you can do a combo royalty where you decide how much money you'll be making as well as how much money the charity(s) will be making from your lens. Two of my favorite charities to donate to are the Squidoo Charity Fund and the ASPCA for their excellent service.

Links In The Pictures

A great way to get someone to click on your link is to insert it into a picture. When you are uploading a picture to the Text Module or the Text With BIG Picture (this one), you'll also notice the words "Link the photo to this URL (optional)" below where the picture was uploaded. You can put in a link of whatever you want and have a relevant picture. For example, if you click on the squid, you'll be lead to my Squidoo referral link. If you add links into a picture, you could be getting more click outs.

Back Linking Empire

Back links are important on the web if you want your website to succeed. If you already have a great website that is not affiliated with Squidoo, then I highly recommend going on Squidoo anyway, creating lenses, and linking them all back to your website. Since search engines like Google adore Squidoo, you're lenses will be getting heavy traffic, and if your visitors click the links back to your original websites, then you'll be getting more traffic than you would from those websites.

Giant Squids

What Are They

Giant Squids are known for their quality content here on Squidoo. Giant Squids get some valuable goodies along the way such as a Squidoo T-Shirt, a Purple Star (which tells others that your lens is excellent), or a lens template feature. You can see all of these special rewards as well as good examples of Giant Squid quality here.

Using The StickyNote And Blackbox Modules Correctly

If you overuse the StickyNote and/or Blackbox Modules, your lens will look too colorful which will annoy your visitors. Instead, only use the StickyNote and/or Blackbox Module when you have to say something really important. Using these two modules to highlight the important stuff will make a visitor stay around. For example, when you are reading a story, and there are question at the back of the book, are you underlining every word in the book or are you underlining the important words and sentences?

Big Arrow

Do you see the more squidoo tips arrow below? That will lead you to another one of my lenses about Squidoo TIps. The Big Arrow Module allows you to highlight a main website (now's the time for back linking). I enjoy using the Big Arrow Module because it's short, sweet, and to the point. I am happy to use the Big Arrow Module.

Points - Is Squidoo A Video Game?

On Squidoo, you can be awarded points for various things that you do on Squidoo. Everyone Wants A Top 10

Some of the most successful lenses are about the Top 10. You can write a new Top 10 lens about anything you want such as Top 10 places in the world or Top 10 Presidents. No matter what you do on Squidoo, you should have at least 1 Top 10 lens. Then, your visitors will get in on the action and you'll get some people's opinions. Was FDR really better than Abraham Lincoln? Creating a Top 10 lens could get a lot of feedback which is vital for a successful lens.

Content Always Wins

Do you want to get a good lensrank on your lenses? Well, content always wins. For example, if you look at my lensmaster profile, you'll see Teens on Squidoo, the Lego Station, and Yugioh Cards all on the top. If you click on the lenses, the bar that allows you to scroll down is very small. However, if you were to look at my profile and go all the way to the end where my lenses are at around 300,000, you'll see that these lenses have little content. Content makes your readers stick around.

Social Media Power

Social media is a powerful way to get a lot of traffic to your lenses. This traffic can result in sales, more visits, and so on. I have used social media for my business, and I have been very happy with the results. I have received hundreds of extra visitors from social media. So far, I mainly use Twitter and Pinterest to promote my lenses, but now, you can promote your social media on your Squidoo lenses.

Purple Stars - And How To Get Them

I have received Purple Stars for my Teens on Squidoo and Tips4Squidoo lenses. For the new Squidoo lensmaster who wants a Purple Star, here are some ways to produce a Purple Star worthy lens.

  1. Quality content always wins.
  2. If you become a Monster Squid (Level 50), you are guaranteed a Purple Star for one of your lenses.
  3. Submit an awesome lens to one of the quests.
  4. Have another lensmaster submit your lens to the Squidoo staff through the Purple Star quest.

Use Your Own Photos

It is very difficult to make an entire lens just by using your own photos. However, the results can be incredible. This is the Introduction Photo to my How To Do A Lego Animation lens. Less than a week after I submitted this lens for a quest, it won a Purple Star and was selected as LOtD. I can say now that the traffic everyone says they get from a LOtD is true. This lens got over 1,000 visitors in 1 day just because it was the LOtD. When you have a chance to use your own photos, go for it because you'll able to tell a better story to the audience.

Yes, I link all my Flickr photos to the Creative Commons licensing information page so I only have one hyperlink in the text body of the module.
