Brainstorming Clears Writer's Block

It happens to us all at one time or another, the dreadful writer's block. You sit looking at a blank page or an empty computer screen and think, "What am I going to write about?" Everyone you ask will ream off a list of topics of which you may know nothing about or have very little interest in. In other words, they are of no help.

Using a calendar as a guide for brainstorming, I will suggest potential topics that may work for you. Some may be just what you've been waiting for or perhaps you will get another idea as a result of this session.

How to Reach the First Page on Google Search

It's said, "the best place to hide a dead body is on page 2 of a Google search". In other words, if you aren't on the first page, you probably won't get found. If you haven't noticed, people have become impatient and want instant results and many won't even go to the second page of a search engine.

We all want to be at the top of a Google page in the search results. Let's be honest, this is 'the holy grail' for online writers. So what does it take to make it there? Many visitors, a popular topic, possibly a niche market, advertising, longevity and some would say deep pockets.

If you ask people how long it takes to get a high ranking in Google, they will shake their head and say, "how long is a piece of string?". The truth is no one is quite sure. A ballpark figure that is bandied about is 3 months to get noticed. Why am I telling you this, you might ask. What I am going to do today is give you ideas that you will want to start writing at least three months before they are going to be searched for. For example, if you were going to write about Father's day, which is in June, you would want to write your article by March at the latest. This gives you a good chance of climbing up the proverbial Google ranking and getting noticed when the majority of people will be searching for your topic.

Update your Pages

Keeping your pages updated is very important. Google doesn't like to see pages that are written and abandoned. If you have pages already written, let's use our example of Father's day again, ensure you update and begin promoting at least one month before your page is likely to be searched for. If your target is in June, have that page updated by the beginning of May and promote frequently on sites such as Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest.

It isn't necessary to do a rewrite of the entire article but make sure you have changed about a third of the text, updated any product links and promote!

The Well-Fed Writer: Financial Self-Sufficiency as a Commercial Freelancer in Six Months or Less
The Well-Fed Writer: Financial Self-Sufficiency as a Commercial Freelancer in Six Months or Less

When I bought this book, my writing changed. There had always been a nagging feeling in the back of my mind whether my writing was good enough. It was that self-doubt that kept me from being the writer I wanted to be. This book gave me the confidence I needed to put my writing out there.

To get more views online and to sell more articles your writing needs to connect emotionally with people and that is what I got out of this book.

It wasn't only that, it was about turning my writing into a commercial enterprise not just dabbling in the back ground making pin money.

Now, my writing is our main income and it is all thanks to this book.

Are you ready to write?

I hope this has given you a few ideas. You can see how easy it can be to brainstorm around a topic as simple as holidays. Remember this is just the tip of the iceberg with regards to holidays. There are many more official and unofficial ones, some are even wacky! Every week there seems to be a new 'appreciation day' for someone. So use this as a starting guide and get writing. If you would like to leave a comment, I would love to hear it.

Write on Hubpages

Would you like to write here on Hubpages? Unlike some internet publishing sites, it's free to join and you can earn money by writing articles about a wide variety of topics that you choose.

Hubpages take care of the technical side. When someone clicks on an ad, you get money into your account. When your balance reaches the payout level, currently $50, you are paid by Hubpages. It's easy to use and there's a great bank of knowledgeable writers willing to help you with any questions you may have.

Everyone who writes online and makes money from it was where you are now, wondering if they should, could, or would be able to be a writer. They took that step and wrote just one page. Then they wrote another and kept at it. Now, they are making money not just from their current articles but also from the ones they wrote when they first started. How great is that!

If you think you would like to give it a go, you can sign up at the top of the page. I'll be looking forward to reading your pages and watching your progress. You have nothing to lose by signing up, and everything to gain.

      Hi Robert,

Yes, it would but you would want to start promoting it early on social media. Keep it updated as well throughout the year so the search engines see it as active.

Thanks for reading and your comment.

This article has some great ideas. The 3 month tip is a good one. If a Christmas article is posted in December, too late for a good Google showing, will the article have another chance at a good posting next December?

I am pleased. All too often we think about an event when it is right around the corner and then it is too late from a promotional point of view.

Thank you for your visit and comment.

      Hello Alex,

I always think making a list is a great idea. Because when writer's block happens you can easily refer back to it for that needed spark of inspiration.

      Thanks for the comment.

      Hello Annart,

You may have given me an idea for another hub. I spent 20+ years in England, how about we invent national bubble and squeak day? Or Brussel sprouts admiration day. One more I can't resist, 'visit your local allotment week.'
