Lensography: Johann The Dog

Updated on March 19, 2013

Hi, I'm Johann!

This is my lensography - or Johannography, if you like. Explore, share, learn and, by all means, have fun!

I'm a pretty busy pup. Got my own website - and Dog Blog - and I do agility and herding when I get the chance, and help raise money for dog shelters and rescues.

My absolute favorite thing in the entire world, well besides my Mum, of course, is agility. Yep, Dog Agility. And I like other dog sports too.

Since I got involved in dog sports, many pups and humans wanted to know how they could be involved, learn more or get started in sports. Then we found Squidoo - and decided to utilize this great forum to direct people to all kinds of resources on dog sports.

Then we branched out into other dog related lenses. We're just getting started, so watch for more lenses coming soon!

Squidoo Lens of the Day!

I've been fortunate enough to have five of my lens Canine CPR, Dog for Veterans, How to Make a Dog Waste Composter, Super Tough Toys for Super Tough Dogs, Hiking DeSoto Falls and Blood Mountain from a dog's point of view and /">How to take great photos of your dog were blessed by Squidoo on August 16, 2007, Memorial Day, May 30, 2011, November 30, 2011, August 30, 2011, August 17, 2012 and January 7, 2013 as Lens of the Day! I am very honored to have this coveted distinction bestowed upon my lenses.

My Canine CPR lens talks about the importance of knowing CPR for your dog. One day I was reading about my blogging friend, Tish, and how she saved her pup Cruella from choking. I am so glad she knew what to do! It's so important to know information on how to perform CPR on your dog! You just never know what can happen. In my lens I bring you information on how to learn CPR and when to use it. As my Mum always says, BE PREPARED!

Far too many soldiers return from the war with disabling injuries and disabilities that make it difficult for them to cope with the challenges of every day life. But there is hope through Dogs for Veterans. Specially trained dogs of of all shapes, sizes and color are helping these veterans in a wide variety of ways to give them the assistance they need to help them live a more full life

We recently moved to a cabin in the Mountains of NE Georgia and have a lot of land and a septic system, so dealing with the doo has become a big concern for us. We sure don't want to take our doo to the dump once a week and we sure don't want to fill up the landfill either! So we decided to create a lens about how we plan on making our own Dog Waste Composter to get rid of the doo the environmentally friendly way!

If you're not a softie, you're a toughie! And toughie dogs need tough, safe toys to play with. So we're bringing you the toughest of the tough. From the Indestructible Hurley and the Tuffies tough series of toys to the new My Good Dog Vibram series of toys, we've got 'em!

In July of 2012, we took off on one of our most fun and most strenuous hikes to date - hiking both DeSoto Falls trails and Blood Mountain in the Chattahoochee National Forest in North Georgia.

Taking photos is one of my Mum's favorite pass times. And I love being her muse! Learn how we get great photos, it's easier than you think!

On September 19, 2007, I was incredibly honored to learn I became a member of the Squidoo pack that calls themselves the Giant Squids!

And on July 2, 2008, I became a member of the new Giant Squidoo Top 100 Club for having 100 quality Squidoo lenses!

They are the cream of the crop, best of the pack, top of the heap, Squidooers. Oh, and did I mention they are a great bunch of two-leggers, with a few four-leggers thrown in! You couldn't ask for more professional, nice, supportive bunch of Squids!

This lens was featured on the Giant Squid Community Showcase!

A Saint and a blessing!

Saint Francis of Assisi (September 26, 1181 - October 3, 1226) was a Roman Catholic friar and the founder of the Order of Friars Minor, more commonly known as the Franciscans. He is known as the patron saint of animals, birds, and the environment, and it is customary for Catholic churches to hold ceremonies honoring animals around his feast day of October 4.

These ceremonies are often called Animals Blessings! This custom is conducted in remembrance of St. Francis of Assisi's love for all creatures. Visit my lenses and learn more!

Dog in politics!

Political pooches play a big role in history!

September 23rd is Dogs in Politics Day, so we wanted to share some interesting information and facts about dogs in the political arena.

Because, Harry S. Truman once said...

"If you want

a friend in Washington, get a dog."

Read on to find out more about dogs in politics, the role they play in history, trivia, videos, facts, quizzes, and more! Photo courtesy of the Presidential Pet Museum.

Featured Lens - The scoop on doo!

One day I got a mild bout of gastroenteritis. Not a fun thing 'cause it comes with the "Big D" and a real upset tummy. For two weeks, it was all about my doo! Was it solid, was it runny, what color was it. They even looked at it under a microscope. What????

What I learned was my 'output' is a very important gauge in the status of my health, and all pups health. So in honor of my little to do about the 'doo', I decided to create this lens - a mish mash of all things doodie!

Here's to the power of the poo! Visit the Scoop on Doo!

Books and book reviews!

  • The Art of Racing in the Rain

Being a dog, I love to read a book from a dog's point of view. And Enzo, narrator of "The Art of Racing in the Rain" doesn't fail me. He's thoughtful, poignant, philosophical, intelligent, reflective, hopeful, supportive and a loyal friend. "The Art of Racing in the Rain" captured me from the start. Maybe it's because I'm a dog, and maybe it's because I love racing, but mostly because it was a great story!

  • The Agility Advantage

If you need to keep your agility dog in shape, this is the book for you! Each short chapter of the book stands alone and provides a wealth of information on topics ranging from how dogs are built, how dogs move, how to feed and exercise, help them move faster and healthier, stretching and strengthening exercises and much more.

  • Shaping Success

When Mum got my sis, Gracie, she needed something to help her be not only the best dog she could be, but help her learn agility from the ground up! And she found just the book - Shaping Success by Susan Garrett. It includes a wealth of information from puppy basics, to games for building focus and motivation, to training reliable contacts and weaves.

  • All About Agility

This book was my first agility book and I loved it. It told me and my Mum all about the sport of agility, how to get good training advice, how to enter trials, all the different venues, and best of all - how to get those ribbons and titles! It is a great book for beginning agility enthusiasts - but be careful, you'll get addicted!

  • Summer reading for dog lovers!

I love a good book, a suspenseful mystery, an amazing true story, and a great fictional tale! And Summer is our favorite time to read a good book. So we got to thinking about some great reads that dog lovers would really enjoy this summer. Here's a list of some of our favorite books and some that are on our list to read this Summer.

  • The Chet and Bernie Mystery Series by Spencer Quinn!

Reading a series of books through the summer is super fun, especially if the books are written from the dog's point of view! This Summer we've been pawing into the The Chet and Bernie Mystery Series by Spencer Quinn, and really enjoying it!

  • Johann's favorite dog food and treats!

Lots of folks ask me all the time what kind of food I eat, and what kind of treats I like. I have Irritable Bowel Syndrome, so I have to be very careful about what I eat. My IBS is 'triggered' when I come in contact with anything with preservatives, artificial flavors or colorings, and anything that's not all-natural. But we found a food perfect for me!

  • My favorite dog harness!

Harnesses are an important item for us pups. And it's not easy to find one that fits well, doesn't restrict your movement, and doesn't have nasty buckles to rub your shoulders. But that's just what we found with our new Puppia Harness.

  • Johann's favorite homemade dog treats!Sit, down, play dead, spin, beg, shake paw, high five, wave - I'll do just about anything for a treat! But treats can be expensive - especially if you purchase organic, all natural treats like we do. And some treats have nasty ingredients that aren't really good for us pups. So Mum will often make me some treats at home!

This is USMC Sargeant Stubby, hero and veteran of WWI, and perhaps the most decorated War Dog in history.

Working along side brave soldiers, K9 Corps have helped soldiers fight for our freedom throughout history - saving many, many lives, with no regard for their own.

My Dogs of War Lens honors those canine military heroes and is dedicated to thousands of dogs that have given their lives to military service over the years.

Far too many soldiers return from the war with disabling injuries and disabilities that make it difficult for them to cope with the challenges of every day life.

But there is hope. Specially trained dogs of of all shapes, sizes and color are helping these veterans in a wide variety of ways to give them the assistance they need to help them live a more full life.

My Dogs For Veterans lens honors these canine heroes who give of their lives to veterans throughout the United States, and serve them selfishly - providing them with much needed assistance, comfort and friendship.

Me and my sister Gracie, have a pretty doggone good life! And we pass that way of life on to all the humans we meet!

One of our missions? To pass on our 'it's a dog's life' attitude. Two-leggers take note - you can learn a lot from us four-leggers - and have a happier, healthier life in the process.

So let's get started. We're gonna show you just what "A Dog's Life" is really about!

And while you're at it, visit my lens about wonderful and wise quotes about dogs!

In 2005, I was rescued by the Southside Animal Shelter from a life on the streets. Just a few weeks later my Mum found me and took me home. I am one of the lucky ones, because now I have a wonderful family and a wonderful life.

But not all pups are as lucky as I. Some are still waiting for their forever home, some live their lives in horrific conditions with little to no chance of being saved, some are even made to fight for the entertainment of cruel individuals, some are neglected, scared and lonely.

Every year I share my letter to Santa, hoping that he can help all the pups who need help throughout the World!

Interesting and fun!

  • Teach your dog to walk on a treadmill

When I got my last injury, an iliopsoas muscle pull, at an agility trial in January 2008, I had a lot of rehab to do to get back in shape for running agility again. Mum helped me with lots of stretching and strengthening exercises, but she also taught me how to walk on a treadmill to get in additional exercise.

  • Teach your dog to ride a skateboard!Earlier this year, I was doing a photo shoot for this pawsome new Rescue Dogs photo book. While at the shoot, Mum found a skateboard and decided that we'd have some fun! I've always wanted to learn how to skateboard...and Mum was ready to teach me. So we got busy!

Prison dogs!

All over the country, male and female inmates in state correctional facilities are training dogs that will someday make a very positive and lasting impact on people in need. These prisoners are training dogs to become service and assistance dogs!

These transformational prison dog training programs are making an incredible impact on the prisoners, the dogs, and the people they help.

My Prison Dogs lens shares information about two of these programs, and shares more information about other prison dog training programs to bring awareness to the good work that they do!

I am a very fortunate pup - have a great family, a great career, great hobbies - a pup just couldn't ask for more. So, we have been working steadily to give back, through our website and other ways.

We thought it was time to take the next step. So we started a blog that highlights pups in need; pups in rescues and shelters throughout the country.

Be sure and check it out - 'cause we will be featuring a new pup in need every day of the week. And there are great links to all kinds of rescue organizations - purebred and All-American - throughout the country.

Click to help dogs in need!

There are so many ways to help dogs in need. One of my favorite ways is to 'Click to Give.' It's easy, fun, fast and can really help some pups in need of care, food and a new home to call their own.

My SquidFlix and movie lenses! - Some of the best dog movies around!

  • Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey

I just love dog movies, and this one is one of my absolute favorites. It has adventure, humor, trust, trials and tribulations, love, laughter and hope. At home with their owners, the animals rarely get along even during the best of times.

  • Eight Below

Eight Below is a great dog movie! I could watch it over and over. It has adventure, excitement, great acting, and above all it has loyalty!

Fluke is one of my all time favorite dog movies. It's a very touching film adapted from the James Herbert novel of the same name.

Dog blood donors save lives!

Each day throughout the country dogs need blood for serious procedures from accidents and illness. Without dog blood donors, veterinary surgeons could not perform these important and lifesaving operations.

When I was attacked by several dogs in 2005, I needed blood for my operation. I am grateful that the pups that donated the blood were there for me. I am creating this lens in their honor.

You and your pup can help, too. As more and more advances in veterinary care become a reality, there becomes more and more of a need for blood throughout the country. Check out my lens on dog blood donation!

Celebrate the dog!

Everyday is a day to celebrate if you're a dog, right! Just as it should be, there are many, many days devoted to us pups and pets! Yes, that's right.

From National Dog Day to National Scoop Your Poop Week we've listed them all. Check out my lens and if you know a dog, be sure and wish them well on their special day! K?

*** Blessed by a SquidAngel *** for an outstanding lensography, your love of dogs, and your excellent writing.

Btw, my dog looks SO much like Johann - I am SURE they are cousins, at least! I wish my sweetie could do the agility stuff - she loves to run - but she had to have knee surgery (she is okay, just can't run very much). Still, she is a beautiful, smart & happy dog like yours. Bravo to you all on a great page!

      LOVE the photos!
