Just Writing On Squidoo...

Updated on October 18, 2013

A little about me (glockr)...

I'm a middle aged man living in Sparks, Nevada. I was born in Lodi, California and grew up in Bishop, California, which I still consider my home. I'm married to Alice and we have 2 sons. I like hunting, fishing, riding bikes with my family, working on cars, building model airplanes and rockets, model railroading, and messing around on the computer. Other interests are Bible study, electronics, personal finance, real estate, photography and video, and blogging.

Growing Up

My childhood had a big influence on what I like to write about...

I was lucky enough to grow up in Bishop, a small town on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada mountains in California. Most of my friends hated Bishop and couldn't wait to get away from it once they got out of high school. I loved it (still do) and wish I could get a job and move back. My parents were (are) conservative and Christian and they passed those values on to me. Their parenting style was about at the half way point among my friends - a lot more strict than some friends' parents but a lot more lax than others. My favorite thing to do with my parents was going fishing (and later hunting) with my dad. He worked for Caltrans and during the summer our family would sometimes go with him on business trips. For Thanksgiving and Christmas every year we'd drive to Sacramento to visit family. Besides my Grandparents I had 4 uncles, 3 aunts, 7 cousins, and other relatives who all came to Sacramento for the holidays. Overall I had a happy childhood and I still have a great relationship with my parents.

My Family - My wife, kids, parents, and extended family are very important to me...

I have a great relationship with my family, but I don't talk much with my sister because she thinks her political views mean she's smarter than me. My parents have a house in Reno so I get to see them a lot, which I love - especially I love that my kids get to spend so much time with Grandma and Grandpa. My wife and I live in Sparks with our 2 sons. Our older son was born in 1990 and our younger was born in 2005. Our older son likes playing chess, listening to Christian music, and going to church. Our younger son likes playing with cars, model rockets, watching movies, helping Mom and dad, and paradoxically making the house messy:) Both kids love visiting Bishop.

Why I'm On Squidoo - Why else? To get rich!!!

I joined Squidoo because it seemed like a great way to make some easy money and drive traffic to some of my hobby blogs. I learned pretty fast that making money on Squidoo isn't exactly easy, but it's incredibly easy to make lenses (pages) about things I like. In fact it's so much fun that I've pretty much given up making money (I do make a little each month) and writing Squidoo lenses has pretty much replaced blogging as a creative outlet for me. I do write some sales lenses but mostly I enjoy writing about my hobbies. Some of my favorite subjects are highlighted below.

Content Rules - If you don't give them a reason to come, they won't come...

If you want people to visit your site, your pages, whatever... you need to give them a good reason. On the web, that's content. Content Rules explains why you need great content, why good content will drive traffic, and most importantly how to create good content. All of it is backed up with examples and case studies. If you're looking for black hat methods or get rich quick schemes you won't like this book. If you're looking for help with building a solid, valuable web site that has your visitors WANTING to keep coming back for more you'll love this book. Caution: one of the premises is that quality web sites require a lot of work...

Cars - I love vintage automobiles...

I've loved cars ever since I was around 13, so naturally I enjoy writing about them. Mostly I like vintage Mopars but we also have a Honda S2000 that I love. Here are some of my best car lenses:

Model Trains - I've been working on the railroad...

I've loved model railroading since I was little. The first Christmas I remember I got a toy train set. Now at 47 years old I still play with trains. Here are some of my best model railroading lenses:

Guns - Hunting, target shooting, and collecting...

I've loved guns as long as I can remember. My first was a Daisy BB gun. My first real gun was an Ithaca single shot 20 gauge I got when I was 10 or 11 - I still have it:) I used to be an avid dove and quali hunter, but now I mostly just target shoot and collect. I also enjoy writing about guns.

Misc. Interests - OK, so I have a short attention span...

Besides toy trains and cars, I'm interested in lots of different things - cooking, photography, health, rockets, etc. Here are some of my favorite lenses on lots of mind clutter:

Lenses That Inspire Me - Work by other Lensmasters that far surpasses mine...

My lenses aren't the only ones on Squidoo, in fact they're not even the best:) One of the most effective ways I've found to learn how to make good lenses is to study great lenses. Here are some of the most awesome lenses I've found on Squidoo. I hope you enjoy them as much as I have...

That's All, Folks - That should just about wrap things up...

There you have it, a little bit about me. Hopefully you weren't too bored, and I hope you found some lenses worth reading. Enjoy your day, I know I'm enjoying mine:)

Another outstanding lens, you are a great lens master. I'll be taking your advice and learning from your lenses, among others. Thanks for all the great info, and I didn't realize you are just up in sparks. Do you ever show your cars? Maybe I'll run into you up at Hot August Nights!

Great lens and lovely to meet you and learn all about you. You inspire me to try a bio lens of my own. Good luck with your journey here on Squidoo. :-)

As my husband is a car lover, we just spent a day at the Geneva Car Show and I was surprised finding myself enjoying it.

Hello from one middle aged man to another. I enjoyed your lens...nice to get to know you a little bit. I've been involved with Squidoo about six weeks...haven't gotten around to making an "about me" lens yet. I enjoyed yours and look forward to reading more of your lenses. All the best. Dave Speed
