How To Transfer or Gift A Squidoo Lens

Updated on March 9, 2013

Transfer your Squidoo lens to another account or create a gift lens

Don't like your username? Want to give your lens away, for love or money? Then you need to transfer your lens (or lenses) to a different account. Transferring your Squidoo lens is quite simple - just a matter of click, select, enter email, and (at the other end) accept.

'How Can I Transfer My Lens'? is a very common question on the forums. And while the answer is very simple, it's been asked often enough that I decided to make a lens about it.

March 2013 Update: The ability to transfer lenses has been turned off for a few weeks, while HQ figures out what to do with low quality lens sellers. They are accepting requests for lens transfers here, otherwise you will have to create a gift lens (still working, I think) or copy the content over onto a new lens.

I Want To Change My Lens URL

How To Transfer the Lens Content

If you want to change the actual lens URL - perhaps you made a typo, or realised something else worked better - rather than just changing the account that owns the lens, it's a bit more complicated.

No, you cannot automatically transfer modules and other content, unfortunately. You will have to create a new lens and copy the content across manually. Copy and paste it from one workshop to the other, or into Notepad and then out again.

You can then delete the old lens, if you wish - on your dashboard, if you hover your mouse cursor over the lens title, you should see a row of links under it. One of these is 'delete'. You'll have to enter your password to confirm the lens deletion (and I've been glad of that a few times, when I've clicked it by mistake!)

If you wish to transfer the entire lens to someone else, then read on for the instructions.

Step One - Go To Your Dashboard

My Dashboard
My Dashboard

The link to your dashboard is up on the top right - if you haven't seen it yet, go have a look around, as it's quite important. It doesn't matter which tab you're on, but it will look something like the picture above.

Step 2: Find the 'Transfer a lens' Link

The 'Transfer a Lens' link
The 'Transfer a Lens' link

Scroll down and look in the blue and white column on the right, until you reach the section titled 'Don't miss this tool'. Third in the bullet list is 'Transfer a lens'.

Click this and you will go to the screen shown below, that allows you to choose your lens and write a message to the recipient. (Here's a direct link to the lens transfer page in case you're really lost)

Step 3: Lens Transfer Form

Lens Transfer Form
Lens Transfer Form

If you've never transferred a lens before, this is what you'll see (If you HAVE, there'll be a section called 'Transfer History' above it - more on that further down).

Step 4: Select the lens you want to transfer

Select a lens
Select a lens

  • 1. Select the lens you want to transfer, and tell us who should receive it.

So choose your lens, and add their email. The lens I've chosen for this example is my profile lens.

Step 5: Accepting the Transfer

Lens Transfer Email
Lens Transfer Email

  • We will send your friend an email with a link to accept the transfer. If he successfully accepts, this lens will be removed from your My Lenses list upon your next visit. The lens will appear in your friend's list of lenses, and he will be responsible for the content of the lens going forward.

The person whose email you entered (in this case my own) will get an email looking like the one above. All he, she, 'e, or zie has to do is click the link.

If you are transferring to yourself make sure you are logged into the new account. You can then delete the old account if you wish.

Lens Transfer History: Accepted, Cancelled and Pending - How to interpret the history section

Transfer History
Transfer History

Above you can see my history section, with the oldest at the top. You can see the lens URL, (without the part), the email (which I've deleted for obvious reasons!) the date, and the status.

The first three were made by me and sent to the friend who actually wrote most of the content (for practice, and because I could see lenses there. Also to lure them onto Squidoo...

The Status

Accepted is obvious - the lens has been accepted and all you have is the record.

Cancelled is a transfer that YOU cancelled.

Pending means they have yet to accept it, and you can cancel it by clicking the little cross symbol on the right.

Possible Problems: Points and Comments

Log in BEFORE accepting

The biggest problem with transferring lenses is the recipient not being logged in to the right account when they accept. The new lens should appear on the dashboard immediately, so if it doesn't, make sure you are logged in then click the transfer link in the email again.

Points and Levels

Be aware that transferring a lens does not bring with it any points, so the receiver will still not have those points. If they are very new, they may not be able to use all the modules on the transferred lenses. They can still edit, just not add any more.

It's easy to go up the first few levels by making more lenses and being reasonably active around Squidoo.

Pending Comments

If comments are moderated and someone has left a comment that has not yet been approved it will stay on the original owner's dashboard, but can no longer be approved. The only way to make it appear is to go into the lens itself and approve the comment straight from the Guestbook module.

Transfers and the Points System

How does it affect my levels and trophies?

A transferred lens does not:

bring old points with it'Count' towards a lensmaster's number of created lensesAllow low level lensmasters to use the not-yet-unlocked modules and features at willIt DOES:Allow you to edit and keep anything already on that lensCount towards your points from that point onwardsKeep any existing Likes and Blessings ( Likes are for the lens, not the lensmaster, so likes stay with the lens. Points and stuff are for the lensmaster, not the lens; likes may give points but they're separate). So be careful of transferring too many lenses to a new account, as you may find yourself at the ten lens limit and unable to create a new lens (no more than ten allowed until you reach level five - which is easy to reach when you MAKE the lenses)

Lens Gifting - Send someone a gift lens without publishing it!

Build a Gift Lens! Does your dad know everything about restoring old Corvettes? How about your friend who photographs dogs for a living. Or your sister who has the best meatball recipe ever. Have we got the gift for them. Gift a Squidoo lens to a fr
Build a Gift Lens! Does your dad know everything about restoring old Corvettes? How about your friend who photographs dogs for a living. Or your sister who has the best meatball recipe ever. Have we got the gift for them. Gift a Squidoo lens to a fr

Squidoo brought in Gift Lenses in December 2010. You make them by starting here, write as much or as little as you choose, and then send it to the recipient, who has 30 days to accept it.

Points to note:

You must start at The Gift Lens Front Door (otherwise just transfer it normally)You need the email of the person you are sending it toThey'll need an account before they can accept it and view the workshopIt stays unpublished until they publish it, but it does turn up in the 'newest lenses' in your My Lenses Module. The available lens types and clubs don't include everything (currently includes normal Lens,SquidPaws, SquidQuiz, SquidLit, WhyVeg?, Cupcake Club, Kid's Birthday Party, Monkeybrain, SquidBoo, Holiday Gifts 2010, Toys for Toddlers and Homeschool Club)You can resend the invitation after the 30 days is up, and then it completely disappears (don't click on the resent link before that, as it will go ahead and send! You don't get a chance to change the email)

You can continue to edit the lens until it is acceptedOnce accepted, it appears in yet another section at the bottom of your dashboard for a certain amount of time.I don't know if you get referrals. It might be a good idea to include your referral link in the email and ask them to sign up through that.

Send and Update Gift buttons
Send and Update Gift buttons

When you want to send the gift lens, just click the giant pink 'Send Gift' button at the top of the lens (instead of the 'Publish' button). After it sends, this will change to an 'Update Gift' button, in case you want to keep editing.

The next step in sending your gift...
The next step in sending your gift...

You'll get a pop-up box. Just write a name (any name!), your friend or client's email, and a message.

If you change your mind, before you send the invitation you can click the little under the pink 'send gift' button. You'll get the message below...

Pop-up message - you can change the lens back into an ordinary one
Pop-up message - you can change the lens back into an ordinary one
Special Gift Lens section at the bottom of your dashboard

The gift lenses get their own section, right at the bottom of the dashboard. The pending transfers also turn up in the transfer list as normal.

Helpful tips. It's a bit of a shame there's no way to transfer points across though - say when you decide to rebrand, it seems to be a pity that you lose all the hard work done to work up through the levels...

@creamcharger: It's the low quality lenses, and the people who sell (or just move around) low quality lenses. There's nothing against selling a lens/lens account/lens content, as long as everything is kosher.

is selling a lens against the rules? or is it just low-quality lens that they are trying to stop?

I have transferred lenses between 2 accounts, one to my daughter to drag her in, and at least 10 to other lensmasters to resuscitate some started, but unfinished, lenses. I really hope the option to transfer returns for all those reasons. :) Thanks for answering the questions I had.

Thank you a lot for so detailed information. I had an idea of transferring one of my lenses to a new account but now I'm thinking that maybe I better should leave it at my account as I will lose all those likes, etc. that I have.

@sydneykimi lm: You'll need to do it again - it happens instantly when it works.

Are you transferring between your own accounts? If you're still logged into the first account, then you can accidentally accept your own transfer that way. You need to make sure that you log in to the second account BEFORE clicking the link in the email.

Hm, okay, I think the problem I had in just transferring (or trying to, anyway) a lens to someone was that she wasn't logged in at the time she opened the automatic email from Squidoo to accept the transfer. She THINKS she accepted, but if she wasn't logged in, as your lens says, that's probably why it's still in my account and the transfer says "pending." Back to try again. Thanks!

@anonymous: To be clear, I've never actually sold any - I just try and get people I know started a lot!

However, for the linkage, that's entirely up to you. Your buyer may simply replace everything as a matter of course, or they may not even know what an affiliate link is - as long as you tell them what's on the lens, it's then up to them whether they want you to do anything about it, and then up to you whether you comply (they can EASILY change stuff themselves, after all).

Most of the people who sell lenses consistently tend to build very basic lenses and sell them for a low price. Other people are commissioned, and yes, other people simply sell 'good' finished lenses. Everyone's different.

Good, informative lens. Thanks! I'm still kind of new at all this and am intrigued by the concept of selling product review lenses some day. My question is: if you've already built in your own Amazon affiliate link on a product image and then decide to sell the lens, do you just go into your text module and remove your personal link and leave the graphic in there so the recipient can add their own once they buy it? Or, do your customers expect you to not only remove your link, but also replace it with their link as a customer service kind of thing? Do you recommend they pay you via PayPal - half upfront - and the remainder afterwards or all at once before the transfer is made? Have you made some decent side cash doing this? Thanks in advance for any guidance you can provide.

Your lens showed me clearly how to transfer a lens. So I transferred a bunch into a couple of new accounts. It was fairly easy. But unfortunately, now I do not have enough points on my new accounts to make any new lenses. But, anyway, your lens does give clear instructions.

@terihansen: There shouldn't be much change - the username isn't THAT important, and if you're moving all your lenses then you're keeping all the linking aintact, so to speak. The main issues would be if a lot of people had linked to your old profile, or if they recognised your old username, in which case a notice and a link in your bio might be enough. [disclaimer: educated guessing]

Now for another question that you may be able to help with.

I prefer to change all my lenses over to my new username and just use one username.

If I do how does this effect what I have built up in my old username (I'm getting some really cool things finally happening now) Will I be starting from zero again or does it all transfer over?

      Your recommendations, thanks.

@FlynntheCat1: Thanks for your help. I had tried a variety of ways on my computer and I could never capture it. But tonight I went to my son's/family computer and success! So apparently there is something on my computer that is blocking the process.
