When To Create A New Lens

Updated on May 27, 2013

Timing Is Critical

On Squidoo, there are millions of different lenses. Some of these lenses are successful on the first day while other lenses sit in the shadows of other successful ones. However, did you know that the timing of creating new lenses could lead to a high lensrank and heavy traffic? I want to show you what timing has to do with a lens' success.

Time Zone

Squidoo lensrank updates at around 8 a.m Eastern and 5 a.m Western. Your time zone may be similar or different to these locations, but it is important to know when your lensrank updates. Knowing this will make a big difference for your lens, because if you create a lens 5 minutes before the lensrank update, you might get a lensrank right away at over 1 million (I have not tested this, but that is what I assume). Instead, create your lens way before the next lensrank update to ensure that your lens has a good lensrank.

Know Your Other Lenses

A big mistake I have been making on Squidoo is forgetting about my lenses with the terrible lens ranks. I have let these lens ranks get bigger and bigger to the point where I have less than 20% of my lenses earning any money. I wasn't happy to see those numbers, and neither should you if it happens. If this does happen to you, spend more time working on old lenses than creating new lenses because a lens created in the beginning or middle of the month won't get paid during that month. Your older lenses will, but only if they have a good lensrank.

Don't forget about your lenses in Tier 4 because they can be brought back to respectable Tiers. My Teens on Squidoo lens was a Tier 4. That same lens is now in Tier 2 and is close to Tier 1.

Best Time To Create A Lens

The best time to create your new lenses is at the end of the month because that's when old lenses Tier averages for the month are almost unchangeable, and you won't have to wait 3 months to see money from your newest lenses. I create the most lenses around the 21st and 28th of every month.

Choose A Time When You're Free

If you want a new lens to succeed, you need to have free time to work really hard on your lens. The more time you dedicate on a lens, the better it will be. A lens with only 5 modules won't have a high lensrank unless it gets a lot of traffic. If a new lens has 10-20 modules, then you'll see more results. With the SquidWoots coming up again, it is important to practice on this technique before Mondays in July.

Good advice - and yes, you are right about the time of day, too. I have published a lens within an hour or two before lens rank update, and it started out with a very sad number on that first day. So, if you are going to do that, be sure to build in an extra day or two to make up for that.
