20 Nacreous Clouds & Fire Rainbow Pictures - Natural Phenomena
Circumhorizontal Arc (fire rainbow)
What are they? Nacreous clouds, also known as Polar Stratospheric Clouds or PSCs are iridescent clouds which form high in the stratosphere in polar climates. Nacreous clouds appear at dawn and dusk, when the sun's rays hit the high levels of the earth's atmosphere. The colors you see then are the result of the sun's light passing through the icy clouds which creates the illuminated colors.
The other type of cloud you will see here is called a circumhorizontal arc, or sometimes fire rainbow especially if it only affects a singular cloud. These vibrantly colored clouds are the result of a rare rainbow around the sun (a circumhorizontal arc), which colors all clouds it passes through.
