Apocalypse, what does it mean?

For centuries, people around the world have been predicting that the end of the world will come in 2012. Some people use the fact that the Mayan calendar ends in 2012 as proof that the world will come to an end at this given time. Astrologers say that 2012, according to the stars there will be a shift in the universal mind and a united consciences. These astrologist say this is the coming of the age of Aquarius. Many other Indigenous cultures around the world also have prophecies about centering around this time in the world.

Let's look at this in a deeper aspect. Let's start 3000BC, around this time is when it's is thought that the Mayans believe this to be the beginning of the world. The Maya culture has a story about creation. In their creation the Heart of the Sky creates people out of mud but the people were not right and the destroyed the earth, so the heart of the sky brought forth a storm to destroy them and the world. Next the world is recreated and the people are made of wood, they cut down the trees and begin destroying the earth, so the heart of the sky destroys them with a flood. On the third try the people are made of corn and these people were aware of all that was around them, they were wise and knew of everything, the Gods blew a mist in their eyes to give them limited vision. The people of corn is what this "generation" of people are here on Earth at the present time.

According to the Christian Bible the World was destroyed at least twice that I am aware of in scriptures. The first version of World is thought to have been destroyed by the first flood, before that of the Noah's flood. The second time the world was destroyed was by a flood during the time of Noah. According to the Bible we are also the third "generation" of people on the earth. When the Bible uses the word world insert the word age instead.

Given that these town accounts of the history of Earth and it's worlds are similar could it be true that there is going to be a dawn of a new age? Are we working our way to the Apocalypse? In certain scriptures Jesus says "until the end of Ages" is this what is happening now? I am not one to by into conspiracies theories but when different societies on different sides of the world are saying the same thing, is possible that the information came from a greater and more reliable source?

What are we suppose to do? Well personally since Jesus said the "ages" and "age" I hoping that we have another thousand of years through the duration of the age of Aquarius to try to get it right, and maybe the guy writing the Mayan calender got tired or died during his work or even better he thought someone else would be able to continue it in the future. Another thing that puzzles me is if the Mayans had weeks ranging from 13 to 20 days, would 2012 be an accurate year still or did they convert it to our systems of weeks and months before they shared the 2012 as our doom with the world?

Apocalypse comes from the Greek word apokalupsis which simply to uncover. So maybe we are to uncover a new way of thinking. What if we are simply going to connect to a higher conscience?

I do believe though that we need to shift the way that we think. Did you realize that not only are we running out of fossil fuels but also we are running out of drinkable water. Can you guess who is buying up water rights in Texas? (and yes I said water rights) Oil conglomerate T. Boon Higgins. Water is most likely going to become more expensive than oil in the future...

We should be looking for new green ways to conserve our natural resources without all of the extra chemicals that we just love to add to things. Solar energy, windmills to generate energy, heating sources that use minimal amounts of oil and electricity, and things such as the eco-machines to purify water. We should start finding ways to grow our own food with harsh pesticides and resource eating machinery. I am not saying let's all become tree-hugging-hippies but we should start thinking about our situation and how to make it better. If the world doesn't end in 2012 and we are just supposed to shift our way of thinking on a global perspective would you like to be left without water?

Even if the world is to end in 2012, there is a song that I will leave you with that just embodies the way I feel about the situation.

A perfect song for your New Years Party.

      Excellent Hub, Erin!

I had my astrological chart done last year for the first time and even though I am not really a believer I was amazed how right on she was on a number of things and she also covered 2012. Her words were “that life as we know it will end and bring on a new beginning” and as you watch the world around you she is pretty much on target.

Also you are right about the Water. Water rich places will the target of the future. I was joking about this with my former Austrian partner, since Austria has an overabundance of wonderful drinking water, but it really is not all that funny.

Without fossil fuels we can survive, but drinking water should be on the top of our priority list. Maybe we ought to study some of the aboriginal tribes in Australia, I once read, they had the ability to live on very little water and actually called our need an addiction. For some reason, I think the knowledge of native peoples will play an even more important part in the near future.

My thought are that 2013 will arrive and many of us will be here to see it and hopefully it will be a better world not the post apocalyptic nightmare some are predicting but for now I will just appreciate each day I have on this earth and let tomorrow take care of itself.

Hey GoGreenTips, you are more than welcome. I actually studied the Illuminati, and if 2012 is special they might have a part in it if all of the rumors are true. :)

great hub! I liked your perspective that the mayans had longer weeks than we do, and that apocalypse means uncover, rather than what we are led to believe the end.

Interesting about Pickens, yes and water is going to be a very valuable resource in the future, one we have taken for granted too long.

Thanks for commenting on my forum...

Thank you Sunnie Day. I don't think it is too late if we could all switch gears mentally. There are simple things we could all do. Back 1933 a guy named Buckminster Fuller developed a Dymaxion car which got 30 miles to the gallon, and seated 11 people...Things like that should have been what we as a culture clang to, however the society chose to keep 4-5 passenger vehicles that only got 18 miles to the gallon on the road. I am just mentioning this because if that kind of technology was accessible then, just image what is actually out there now.

Thank you for taking the time to read my hub, and I hope that you have a great time on your trip next week.

      Dear Erin,

This was such a great hub. You presented facts from a historical prospective and brought up some great points on how we are using up our natural resources. Hopefully it is not too late. For me I am not sure when the end is coming but we can not deny the signs of the times. If it does happen there is not much we can do about it..but I think we should be watchful and not be ignorant of things that we could do to make this world a better place while we are blessed to be here.We should be good stewards however long we do have left..

      Thanks again..Excellent!
