Looking for our favorite resources for an overview of all 50 states?

Our Favorite Children's Books on the 50 States

Our 50 States: A Family Adventure Across America
Our 50 States: A Family Adventure Across America

We looked through MANY children's books that gave an overview of what makes each state unique. This was our favorite one! Follow a family as they visit each of the states. Famous landmarks and people are included along with a bit of explanation and general state information.

The Little Man In the Map: With Clues To Remember All 50 States
The Little Man In the Map: With Clues To Remember All 50 States

This is a fun way to remember each of the states. A story is given as a mental picture to help you remember which state is which. It provides fun rhymes and mental pictures, like one state being a mitten, one a boot, etc. Also look for the similar book on state capitols: "The Little Man In the Map Teaches the State Capitals!" by E. Andrew Martonyi.

Our Favorite US Map Puzzles

Puzzles are a great way to memorize the states because you have to look at the picture over and over again. When a younger child actually holds a state piece and puts it where it belongs on a puzzle, it really reinforces the states' shape and location more than any amount of time spent coloring a map worksheet.

Our Favorite US Map Puzzle for Younger Children

Melissa & Doug USA Map Floor Puzzle (51 pcs, 2 x 3 feet)
Melissa & Doug USA Map Floor Puzzle (51 pcs, 2 x 3 feet)

51 PIECES. This is the best option if you have younger children. It has 51 pieces and is quite sturdy. We've owned this for 6 years and it is still in good condition. It is quite large, though.

Our Favorite US Map Puzzle for Older Children and Adults

White Mountain Puzzles United States of America - 1000 Piece Jigsaw Puzzle
White Mountain Puzzles United States of America - 1000 Piece Jigsaw Puzzle

1,000 PIECES. If you have older children, this is a fun option. It has 1,000 pieces. It not only includes the states but also features aspects and locations around the US.

Cooking Across the 50 States

I LOVE incorporating cooking into our lessons! It combines multiple senses to enhance learning and long-term retention. Plus, it's just plain fun! About once a week while my children and I were studying the States of the US, we cooked something regional.

I'll Have What They're Having: Legendary Local Cuisine
I'll Have What They're Having: Legendary Local Cuisine

I referenced this cookbook again and again. Unlike the other 2 books I'm featuring, this book was not written for children. It has authentic regional recipes along with fascinating tidbits about the history of the dish. We used it to make Amish Whoopie Pies, Boston Cream Pie, Indian Pudding, Louisiana Beignets, Oregon Blackberry Pie, & Deep South Boiled Peanuts. The recipes are divided by regions.

American Grub - Eats for Kids from All Fifty States
American Grub - Eats for Kids from All Fifty States

I used this one the second most. It gives a short background about each state with a focus on its history and food. It then provides an easy recipe related to that state. A few examples include Louisiana Gumbo, Nebraska Cornhusker Burgers, Oregon Cherries and Cream, and South Carolina Grits.
