ADI Part 3 Lesson Plan Example PST 3 (PHASE 1) THE TURN IN THE ROAD

Updated on January 21, 2013

This preset test focuses on the turn in the road maneuver, sometimes referred to as the 3 point turn, for a partly trained learner. This means the learner will probably never have performed this maneuver and will need full guided instruction.

This PST focuses on;

  • briefing on turn in the road,
  • co-ordination of the controls,
  • observation,
  • accuracy.

RECAP-

  • MSM? (link to turn in road)
  • Obs when moving away? And why? (POM)
  • Angled start?
  • Peep & creep? (clutch to bite, then thickness of pound coin. No break & clutch together!)

Aims & Objectives

  • How to turn in the road using forward and reverse gears (under control)
  • Using effective observations
  • Able to choose a safe, legal & convenient place

ANY QUESTIONS?

(Drive to location correcting any faults on the way)

Talk through Turn in the Road manoeuvre including these points:

  1. We use the turn in the road manoeuvre to turn the car 180 degrees (dead end road, crash in the road and police turning everyone around)
  2. Before preforming this manoeuvre we must be sure it is safe (not on brow of hill or sharp bend), legal (road signs and markings) and convenient (not on busy road to hold up other road users)
  3. Must use good all round observations (pedestrians and approaching traffic)
  4. Camber of the road (apply handbrake to stop rolling, hill starting up/ down, safety first!)
  5. If another vehicle approaches stop, make eye contact and assess the situation (are they moving or waiting?)

Explain how POM and pull/ push steering needs to be used.
