Adjusting to University Life
Adjusting to life at university is one of the most difficult things that a young adult could experience, no matter how prepared you may think that you are.
The transition from moving from your family home which is a familiar environment full of comforting things to a completely one on in a new town with new faces and an atmosphere which is on a whole different level to what you're used the second most scariest moments of my life.
The first being the whole lot of freedom that you get whilst you're there!
I am free to do whatever I please!
I can get a tattoo and not have to hide it with a long sleeved top every day because i'm worrying about my mother giving me a lecture about it. I can walk around my flat when I please naked if i want too because I no longer have to worry about my sisters boyfriend seeing me sneak out of the bathroom after having a shower! and best of all i can have as many parties and have as many friends over as i like!
At first this was the perfect life.
I had moved out, just received a payment of cash, had bought lots of alcohol and met some great people.
Until one day I hit reality.
Where had the money gone? where could I find the information of the lectures that I had missed? and most importantly where had the time gone! I was such an independent person at home beforehand but the truth is I was never prepared for this. Deadlines were around the corner and I was having to play catch up from the work that was taught at the beginning of the year.
Forever being the "bad influence" and the "party animal" I was always tired after too many nights out and I guarantee that I would always eat my words when it came to me saying "I'm never drinking again" as I walked out the door the following evening to go to a friends flat for pre-drinks before student night Wednesdays!
Although I made a lot of mistakes and was really unprepared university has taught me a lot about myself that I don't think I would have realised had I just been living at home. It has taught me that there are endless possibilities and your future holds so many scary yet amazing things!
My maths home tutor Kevin used to say: University will be the best years of your life"
He was right! University made me realise that I was adult with responsibilities but I had met some amazing people and already made some unforgettable memories.
Discipline is key
Having to discipline yourself is harder than you think! The decision between going to a 9am lecture or having an extra two hours asleep and missing the lesson because you can get away with it was tricky. But, if you want the good grade discipline is key! Your first year is a test, it could make or break you! Don't leave it too late!
