Good Introductory Science Books Series for Preschool and Elementary School Kids

The following is a list of great science books series for preschoolers and elementary age children. There are several books in each series, so it's easy to build up a collection covering many different science topics. Many of these books should be available at your local library. They can easily be bought used from amazon.com or library book sales, so you can build a large collection without spending a fortune.

It is important to introduce children to a wide range of topics in the sciences. The science books listed here cover biology, chemistry, physics, geology, anatomy, astronomy, robotics and more.

Basher Science Series

The Basher science series of books cover numerous topics. The format of these books is a lot of fun for kids. Each concept is presented as a character who tells about itself. All of the concepts are explained in approximately 3 to 4 paragraphs. These books are very comprehensive. They covers all the basics of the topics covered. They are an excellent way for young children to build a broad science vocabulary. The books are appropriate for 6 to 12 year olds.

Topics covered are human body, biology, chemistry, physics, astronomy, rocks and minerals, planet Earth and the periodic table. Basher also has math and grammar books.

The Cat in the Hat Learning Library

The Cat in the Hat Learning Library is a series of introductory science books for preschoolers and early elementary age children. The science concepts are explained in rhyme, which makes them very attractive to young kids. These books do a very good job covering basic science vocabulary.

Topics covered include human body (Inside Your Outside), weather, staying healthy, African wildlife, sea life (Wish for a Fish), space, pond life (Would You Rather Be a Pollywog?), plants (Oh, Say Can You Seed?), insects, birds, butterflies, dinosaurs, deserts, mammals, ocean life (A Whale of a Tale), trees, North and South poles (Ice is Nice), rainforests and reptiles.

Best Books of Series

The Best Books of series is appropriate for preschool to approximately 3rd grade children. These books are about 30 pages long and provide a good basic overview of each topics. The science topics are:

The DK Eyewitness books series includes science books. This series is most appropriate for older elementary and middle school kids. Topics covered include chemistry, robots, electricity, forensic science, great scientists, early humans, Earth, space, stars and planets, jungles, weather, ecology, oceans, plants, human body, hurricanes and volcanoes.

Magic Treehouse Research Guides

Some books in the Magic Treehouse Research Guide series cover science topics. These books are good for approximately 6 to 10 year olds. These are chapter books, so they go into some depth on each topic. Science topics covered are:

This series is great for kids because the science concepts are taught in a humorous story format. This makes the books very entertaining. The Magic School Bus covers topics that usually aren't presented in any other series aimed at kids in this age group. Examples of this are:

      The Basher books are great but probably the only ones you won't get cheaply. Watch amazon.com though. I just bought a bunch of these books for $3.60 each. They are usually in the $9-$10 range.

      What a great and useful hub. We love the magic tree house and magic school bus series, but I can't wait to try the basher series, we are focusing on science this year so this was really helpful. Thanks for sharing!
