What is biochemistry
Biochemistry is an area of science that studies living things on a molecular level. Biochemists help influence advances in medicine, forensics, genetics, plant science, and much more. Biochemistry has allowed us to find cures to diseases that would have otherwise been labeled incurable.
Main branches of biochemistry
Animal biochemistry - Study of what goes on inside of an animals body that allows it to live. The study of this allows us to improve our understanding of veterinary science and animal breeding.
Plant biochemistry - This is the study of plants and how they grow. This helps us better understand not only how plants can help us and their medicinal benefits but also allows us to advance in agriculture.
Molecular biology - This is the study of all biology on a molecular level. This greatly overlaps with genetics and the study of medicine.
Cell biology - this is the study of cell function and structure. One of the main studies in this field is advances in stem cell research which are used to treat genetic diseases.
Metabolism - this is the study of how our body functions. They study how we digest food, how our muscles function, how fermentation occurs in our cells and many more studies directly based on our body functions.
Immunology - This studies the immune system in all living and functioning organisms
Genetics - This focuses on hereditary and genetic differences in all living organisms. This focuses on punnet squares and how genes are transferred sexually, and asexually.
Enzymology - This is the study of enzymes and how they relate to each other and other substances.
What does a career in biochemistry look like?
First off to become a biochemist you will need a doctorates degree for schooling. Many universities and technical colleges offer courses for biochemistry or other related careers.
As mentioned earlier as a biochemist you will study living organisms at a molecular level. This includes studying the way chemicals work in our body, and how a body naturally functions chemically. Advances in biochemistry have increased our knowledge or heredity and genetics. As a biochemist you will often times study for other scientists to help make improvements to medicine and treatment methods available. Another thing you may do as a biochemist would be to study effects of pesticides on crops and help create a better product to pests away while keeping your crops healthy. Often times biochemists will work for government, universities, or corporations.
More places that biochemists can work include but are not limited to; agriculture, food institutes, hospitals, education, forensics, cosmetics companies, and drug research labs. The number of jobs in this industry is growing each year because of our need to better understand ourselves and the world around us.
What skills will be needed
Biochemistry is a career where you will need skills that are directly related to this field and skills that are not directly related. Skills that would be directly related to biochemistry include but are not limited to being able to identify parts of our body, being able to identify the process at which metabolism takes place, and being able to see how chemicals effect our mind and body. There are hundreds of other skills that would be needed to be a biochemist depending on what branch of biochemistry someone were to choose.
Biochemists will need a list of skills that may or may not relate exactly to their duties. Though many of these do relate closely they can also be used in a number of different careers if a person with a biochemistry degree didn't get a job in biochemistry.
Analytical - Biochemists need to have analytical skills because they will need to be able to analyse data and problems if they were to arise.
Communication - In this industry biochemists need to have communication skills to be able to communicate with other scientists around them. Also to communicate data founded and be able to calmly express problems if they were to arise.
Research - Biochemists need to be able to conduct research in a variety of different matters and in a variety of different ways. Research needs to be conducted to find an explanation or solution to a problem.
Problem solving - problem solving is used to be able to overcome any problems and to be able to think up new ways to fix something.
Numerical - any research will require data, data requires numbers, numerical skills are used in many ways in the biochemistry career.
Written - Biochemists need strong writing skills to be able communicate why something is needed, the results to a study, and to be able to describe processes that happen within an experiment.
Observational - Any form of science will require strong observation skills. Without them how would they be able to give us accurate data or summaries.
Planning - in any form of science to be able to conduct a study or do research they will have to be able to plan it.
Why study biochemistry
Biochemistry is a growing industry where the people who pursue it make a more than substantial salary averaging at about 86,000 thousand annually. Aside from being more than capable to pay your bills this science is progressing us forward as a people in medicine, agriculture, genetics and so much more. To decide to have a career in biochemistry you could be a part of that. There is plenty of room for expansion and movement.
There's also plenty of room for those people who wish to study unique areas. If you can think of something you feel is interesting and that there's room for it to be learned about as long as you can properly communicate your ideas and intentions and you have the proper education behind you there's plenty of funding out there for you. There's plenty of things about us and about out minds and how things effect us.
