Black Holes And A Unified Theory Of Science And Religion

... Or Why The Universe May Knot Be What It Seems

NASA tells us that “black holes are the evolutionary endpoints of stars at least 10 to 15 times as massive as the Sun. If a star that massive or larger undergoes a supernova explosion, it may leave behind a fairly massive burned out stellar remnant. With no outward forces to oppose gravitational forces, the remnant will collapse in on itself. The star eventually collapses to the point of zero volume and infinite density, creating what is known as a "singularity". (

That may be so, but unfortunately for NASA and the rest of the scientific community, the standard model of particle physics (the currently accepted theory of the universe) doesn’t seem to apply at or near a black hole.

There is another problem with the standard model of particle physics: the mass of the Universe isn’t great enough to hold it together by gravity alone. Physicists have tried to explain this away with the imaginary concept of “dark matter” which must constitute something like 80% of the mass of the Universe, is presumably inert and exists in as much as a further six dimensions beyond our own four of space-time. Researchers at CERN, near Geneva, Switzerland, are using the Large Hadron Collider, a massive particle accelerator to try to recreate the Big Bang to help them find some answers.

Meanwhile, there is perhaps a simple key that unlocks both problems and neatly mollifies almost every philosophy on the planet without spending billions of dollars on research or causing thousands of people to die in religious wars.

Consider the possibility that black holes are knots in the four dimensions of space-time and, as shall be shown, show evidence of just one more dimension which binds the Universe together.

Extra dimensional thinking is nothing new, especially in science-fiction, and even in serious physics, but rarely in a way that makes much sense to the layman. To explain, firstly, what is a knot?

  • A knot in wood appears at the intersection of a branch with the trunk of its tree which later forms a hard unworkable tangle of fibres in an otherwise workable plane of wood.
  • A knot in the stomach refers to a physical blockage of the intestine, or it can be used metaphorically to refer to an instinctive fear or apprehension. In or around the same part of the body (behind the navel, below the ribs) is the solar plexus, a ganglionic (knotty) mass of tissue, said by many religions to be the seat of the soul.
  • A length of rope usually runs freely and in a straight line. Tie a knot in it, either with another piece of rope or in the original rope, and you get an interruption in the free straight line, a blockage.

These are simple examples of knots and they all refer to blockages in the normal scheme of things. On a grander scale, a black hole is similar – this too is a knot in the plane of existence that is the Universe. Time, gravity and all the normal dimensions of space are interrupted, and the law of physics break down in its vicinity.

Imagine a mature tree and take a vertical cross-section of it (diagram not shown). The resulting image we would get is of a tall, broadly conical shape with branches appearing from this cone and, (because the branches of the tree don’t necessarily grow in the same plane), sporadic thinning lines and sporadic spots apparently adrift from the body of the cone, the further we go from it.

If we consider, for a moment, that this tree-section represents our Universe and we are a mere insect or cell living somewhere in a very small part of it, we might, with help of equipment (telescopes), be able to see the shape of this section and wonder to ourselves at how the disembodied parts of the tree-universe stay in place (with insufficient gravitational force). In fact, over time, we might see the major part of the universe expanding, and other parts appear from nowhere, diminish or disappear (rather like observable quantum activity). We would perhaps deduce that the ever-growing tree-universe originated from nothing, or next to nothing, many years ago (Big Bang theory). But we wouldn’t be able to understand how the disparate parts stay “attached” to the rest of the universe. We might have to invent “invisible matter” to help bind the universe together because the gravitational attraction which bonds the body of the tree together would not be strong enough to keep those disembodied parts in contact.

Futhermore, if we were to investigate the length and breadth of our tree-universe, somewhere, sooner or later, we would encounter knots in the grain, impenetrable and mysterious. Unaware of the concept of a branch coming from outside our plane of existence, we would not normally conceive of the possibility.

But add in the extra dimension of depth and suddenly everything becomes clear. We had been looking at the tree-universe in two dimensions of space and one of time when in fact the tree has three spatial-dimensions.

Black holes, as the knots in the fabric of space-time, are the blockage in an otherwise clear framework of the Universe. The real binding force in our Universe is not dark matter but an extra dimension, solidifying what to us are the disembodied parts of the Universe.

Space is bent by gravity; space-time is bent by black holes; the laws of physics are bent by black holes. Indeed, the laws of physics are crude and simplistic to an “occupant” of a further dimension. To such a being, humans are just shadows on a cave wall, sub-dimensional images of something extra-dimensional.

So why don’t we see other evidence of this extra dimension? Should it not pervade our universe at more frequent intervals? And, if so, can it be measured?

The answers are already out there: gods; shamanism; dream states; astral travel; religious experience; and the power of thought or imagination; to name but a few, have all been recognised by humans as truth in their own right by people from all over the world long before Science appeared on the scene. And just because they haven’t been measured by Science doesn’t mean they aren’t real or measurable. The harsh, analytical, nature of Science and the homogenisation of cultures have all but eroded the peoples of the world’s perceptions of this extra dimension. The mainstream populace is out of practice, just as we have lost most of our animal instincts, so we have lost our awareness of what might lie beyond.

Perhaps the clue to how to untie the knot of confusion lies within the solar plexus after all?
