Where to Buy and Sell College Textbooks Online

Updated on February 24, 2011

Finding Cheap Textbooks Using the Internet

There is no getting around it, textbooks are required for almost all college courses and in most cases you will not pass the class if you don't have the required book. The trouble is that college textbooks are becoming more expensive as publishing companies continue to churn out new editions of books full of material that hasn't changed in years.

  • Prices for a single college textbook can be as much as $250!
  • Total costs for one semester can approach upwards of $1000!

As you can see this book bill would put a formidable dent in any college students budget. This is why it is important to shop around and compare textbook prices before giving in to your local college bookstore. There are a ton of resources out there that can help you save money on textbooks. I will show you what these resources are, how to utilize them, and also which ones have worked well for me in the past.

The earlier you search for your books on Amazon, the better deals you will find. Book Search Sites

MyCollegeTextbooks is a site that lets you easily search and compare textbook prices across a large variety of online bookstores. This resource is nice because instead of having to locate and compare book prices at different stores, all the work is done for you. You can simply type in the book title and instantly compare prices for quick savings. With their site you can also easily compare prices when attempting to sell your old textbooks.

  • Buy or Sell College Textbooks
  • Search for the best prices

From my experience with, I would say that they are the best site available for comparing textbook prices. The website is very user friendly and is easy to navigate while searching for books. When you enter information into the search box, the site instantly returns a list of online bookstores that carry your book, starting with the cheapest. This quick and easy search feature is what makes special from other similar sites.

This online textbook resource also allows you to search for textbooks to buy and sell. The great thing about this site is that it offers more options such as rentals and ebook downloads which can save you money. Besides offering deals on college textbooks, this site also can find you discounted DVD/Blu-Rays as well as clothing.

ECampus Options

  • Rent
  • Buy new
  • Download e Textbooks
  • Buy used

This is one of the best sites that I have found as far as a complete online textbook resource. Their book search is simple and they offer the most options for acquiring the textbook you need including rentals and downloads. Under each book's description there is also a summary of that book which includes any large differences that there may be between new and old editions. I found this very helpful when purchasing books from their site.

Compare Textbook Prices

The best strategy for saving money on college textbooks is to spend some time searching for the best deal. The sites above are great resources that I have had good experiences with, but there are also other sites out there that may have better deals on a particular textbook. It is always worth it to put in the time and find a good deal. There are a ton of amazing deals out there if you look hard enough.

College Bookstores:

The biggest mistake you can make is to just walk into your local college bookstore and buy all of your books new. You are wasting your money this way. It is one thing to purchase a used textbook from the bookstore, their markup isn't as high on used books.

Other Resources:

It helps to use networking as a means of finding cheap books. For example if you know someone who took the class you are currently in during a previous semester, ask them if they would mind selling you their old book. Usually friends are more than happy to give you a great deal, especially considering how little college book stores pay for book buy-backs. Pay attention to bulletin boards around your classroom and even on, people trying to sell their books commonly post to these places.
