CHICAGO’S HARVEY GORDON CLARK MEMORIAL BRIDGE & THE 1893 COLUMBIAN EXPOSITION
ABOUT HARVEY GORDON CLARK
Harvey Gordon Clark (1955-1991), was a Southside Electrician who lost his life in a head-on collision near the bridge on 59th and Lake Shore Drive, Chicago, Illinois....
Mr. Clark’s death was the impetus for the installation of temporary safety traffic barricades that separate opposing traffic on Lake Shore Drive.
Thus a memorial bridge marker or plaque was installed on the south west corner of the bridge in honor of Mr. Harvey Gordon Clark’s memory.
By 1999 the temporary barricades had proven to greatly reduce deadly collisions and paved the way for more decorative and permanent traffic safety dividers to be installed on lake shore drive in accordance with state law.
The traffic safety dividers on 50th and Lake Shore Drive are also named in honor of Harvey Gordon Clark’s memory.
ABOUT CHICAGO’S HARVEY GORDON CLARK MEMORIAL BRIDGE AND THE 1893 COLUMBIAN EXPOSITION
The Harvey Gordon Clark Bridge is located 5900 South Lake Shore Drive. (LSD)
The Lake Michigan gateway to the Chicago Park District's Museum Shores Yacht Club, the limestone Harvey Gordon Clark Memorial Bridge still has imposing original iron lanterns atop its four balustrades. At least three of the four lanterns on the bridge are in need of major restoration but, it’s still easy to see that they were once very stately.
In many other places reproductions and variants of the original lanterns from 1893 Columbian Exposition period were installed during area redevelopment of the Museum of Science and Industry campus, the Department of Transportation (streets & easement) and the Chicago Park District but. the lanterns on the Harvey Gordon Clark Bridge are original.
On the west side of Lakes Shore Drive and 59th the Harvey Gordon Clark Memorial Bridge and the Museum Shores Harbor and Yacht Club are set in the lagoons that were created for the 1893 Columbian Exposition. Today the location for both is considered the Museums of Science and Industries south- east campus but, it's actually the Chicago Park District's Jackson Park.
From LSD the Chicago Park District's Burnham Park Lake Front Trail located 5700 East Lake Shore Drive Segway’s into a bridge side LSD underpass which takes you west to the Museum’s south east campus, the Chicago Park Districts Museum Shores Yacht Club, Bowing Green and Jackson Park
