Standing Brooms: Can Planetary / Planet Alignments Make Brooms Stand By Themselves By Gravitational Pull?
Gravitational Wonder or Hoax?
In 2009, Facebook exploded with thousands of personal videos of "standing brooms" possible due to a unique planetary alignment of Venus, Jupiter and the moon. According to the posters, brooms and even eggs stand on their own and remain standing until they are physically moved due to a heightened gravitational pull due to the alignment.
Since mid February 2012, Venus and Jupiter have been converging into alignment with the moon and are expected to be perfectly aligned on March 22, 2012. Visible world wide, could these three planets in alignment affect the gravitation pull of the Earth? According to NASA, slight gravitational affects are possible but any alignments of the planets can not cause major shifts or catastrophes for the Earth. NASA outlines Newton's formula on gravity to explain:
The force between any two objects having masses M1 and M2 separated by a distance R is an attraction along the line joining the objects and has a magnitude:
F = (G x M1 x M2) / (R x R)
The universal gravitational constant which has a value of 6.6732 x 10-11 newton-meters2/kg2 for all pairs of objects. It is defined to be the amount of force needed to accelerate a 1 kg mass at 1 meter per sec2.

Applying Newton's Law of Gravity to Planetary Alignment
The sun's gravitational strength is far greater than the earth's, since the planets all orbit the sun and do not exhibit any very large accelerations caused by the earth or by one another. Newton asserted if the force was proportional to the mass of the object being acted on, then it would also make sense if the determining factor in the gravitational strength of the object exerting the force was its own mass. Assuming there were no other factors affecting the gravitational force, then the only other thing needed to make predictions of gravitational forces would be a proportionality constant. Newton called that proportionality constant G. From this theory, Newton was able to declare that gravity is one objects "attraction" to another object.
The only "planet" with enough power to change the gravitational pull on Earth is the Moon.

Can Planetary Alignments Cause Brooms to Stand?
According to the theories of science, NO.. planetary alignments can not cause a considerable amount of gravitational change to make brooms stand alone. If this were the case, objects weighing less than brooms would stand alone. A shift in the Earth's gravitational pull would cause things not only to stand, but float and the effects would be obvious.
Most people do not attempt to stand a broom upright on occasions other than planetary alignments. Coincidentally, brooms with even bristles will stand up regardless of planetary activity. As an experiment, I myself attempted to get an angled brush to stand and it does. This occurance is not a phenomenon of planetary aligment and should be considered a hoax.
