What is a quality presentation technique?

Hi friends, a few days ago I saw an interesting comment on one of my articles about "presentation techniques" published on Virtualcar.it.

It was a question like: "Could you explain what type of illustration technique is considered as a high quality one?" In that article, I was telling about how to manage a car design presentation in a design school, what to say and what not to say, how to talk about your concept and sell it without over-doing your presentation. Naturally, after the compliments, the reader was interested in understanding better about the graphics and illustration aspects of a car design final presentation.

To try to answer that question I give you an example hoping to be clear. Let's imagine that we are in front of 2 presentations: the one on the right has a great concept, a real good idea something that could really be interesting to have in a portfolio. The one on the left has a great concept, too. It is different from the other presentation, but it is a good idea worth to have it in a portfolio, too.

Student work ( AFAD University Bratislava)

Now my question is: why the presentation on the right is the best? Why am I interested in those drawings and not so much by those of the other student on the left?

The answer is simple: because the quality presentation of his/her drawings is at a very high level and because of it I cannot be attracted by the other presentation!

So what is important other than a very good oral management of our presentation? The content.

By affirming that, I do not mean only the concept but the representation of it:

  • ideation sketches
  • color sketches
  • renderings
  • illustrations
  • technical information
  • the benchmark
  • the editorial overall graphics
  • the choice of general colors
  • the richness of the all presentation making sure that quality is winning on quantity

In this article I will not take your hand and drive it to be a professional designer at work, that would be too easy and I would not give you a helpful service. Here I am trying to make you think! Think how to find good works done by others and just start learning by looking at them. Study the technique and , most of all, try it several times. Listen carefully your teachers at school because they are professionals, follow them when they make demos in class and copy, copy, copy, by doing so you will start to develop your own personal technique with your palette, your way to organize your presentation. You will learn how to manage your quality illustration technique to prepare always great presentations and naturally a good final portfolio.

Good luck,

Luciano Bove
