Change or Be Challenged By Poverty

The running stream of change, if resisted; leaves us poor.

Prince Edike C.

Be The Change You Want To See In The World.

Poverty in my understanding is a socio-economic condition, resulting from a long duration of ignorance, girded by fear in the midst of men. Our society today has been beamed with the lights of mental enlightenment and the waves of globalization, yet humanity still struggle in many areas of life that this same photons and ripples of modernity have illuminated.

Space dimension, atoms and time; the luminaries of globalization, have left man with enlightenment, hope and at the same time, fear; leaving us to choose between motion and inertia. These are two of the many forces and agents that shaped and are still shaping the world today. The quantum jump between these two fundamental forces is change.

One of the challenges of man today is change. Change as it is rightly said, ‘is inevitable”. This characteristic makes it uneasy to welcome when it knocks at our door, leaving us as lonely ox-bow lakes in the meandering stream of the new world. Change is complicated and oftentimes, veiled with pains and shame, making it appears as “enemy of comfort” but it plays its role perfectly well in transforming people and events to a whole new “good” level. One of the aftermath effects of our resistance to change is poverty and I believe that our defense during this battle is rooted from fear itself. Of a truth, the fear of not allowing change to go through us could lead us to complacency, which if not confronted courageously, would lead to poverty. For example, a mode of living that embraces negative outlook of the human person- making him or her to settle for less, could lead to poverty and also, a credit lifestyle -living on debt- means buying esteem; buying more things than you can actually afford has made a slave of many today. Other reason include; unwillingness to change perspective about life – narrow and closed mindedness, and of course, settling in wrong places and making wrong choices in life have made many remain poor even to this day. All these lead to same place which is poverty, be it of the mind, spirit or of cash.

Moreover, change can be hard a time to make when we are confronted by harsh reality beyond our control. Example of such circumstance, is when those in control of our society price themselves or modernity over their people, when this happens, the pursuit for basic needs and fulfillments in life, will be reduce drastically to quest for survival. This has been the plight of people living in third world countries. Such governance, wouldn’t survive the storm of the coming wave of judgment that will sweep across the globe. When unequal living standard is normalized and institutionalized via unfair relationships and policies made by both the leaders of the developed and developing countries, the negative effect could spell doom to generations to come. The evidence of this can be seen in all over the world today.

However, the good news is that we have the capacity to change the only thing we can control; ourselves, our dreams and aspirations. We all hold the key through the choices we make on daily basis and our reactions towards people and events, to change our states of mind and future for the better.

Therefore, none of these factors would defeat the inner and universal aspiration of those that are enlightened and have decided not to be slaves to poverty of the mind and body.

I m fascinated by great lives and minds like Jesus of Nazareth and the prophets before and after Him, and the lives of so many other nobles- known and unknown in history of mankind, whose journey and deeds changed the course of human history. Change, transit and be transformed to new men, capable of fitting in anywhere and anytime in order to grow and contribute to the wholeness that we all belongs was signature they all signed for us to follow.

The light and sound generated by them are seen within and outside our thriving civilization today. They are spreading all over the world for us to change. They are the candles of hope and enlightenment leading those that are willing to learn and change to the road we ought to travel. These lights can neither be quenched by the scourging economic and physical storms in negative motions nor the long neglects by the few in control of our states.

However, as we journey along, when the urge for change becomes strong and we feel the need to leave our comfort zone, and suddenly we are faced with huddles in guess with reasons to remain where and what we are, a simple technique might be of help to break free from status quo. It involves; visualizing a time in the past when you did something that others would call brave or you came up with a sound idea and someone tapped your back and said you are smart. How did you feel doing it? You must have felt some energy and aura inside of you. This feeling didn’t just surface only to enliven you but to serve you next time you are confronting a possible situations that your mind perceived impossible. This system has motivated a lot of people in the past and present to embrace change and leap into a new frontier in their career, relationships, physical, mental and spiritual journey.

Another easy way to embrace change is to know your strength and depend on it. This means whatever your weaknesses are, has to be ignored and begin the transition you desire, taking a step at a time. Usually the process of change starts from within and the moment you no longer want to tolerate the negative voice within, just plunge into an activity that will take you to your goal. Don’t plan it, just do something within that minute that your heart rate peaked up and resonate with the signal that your conscious mind is saying concerning the change you desire. Such activity may ranged from making that call to that man that dropped his business card with you in that party to saying “I m sorry to your spouse”.

Someone said this once, but I can't remember who it was ‘do what you fear most and the death of fear is certain.’ Below are some useful quotes about change, read, meditate and change for the best.

“Without change, something sleeps inside us, and seldom awakens. The sleeper must awaken”.

- Frank Herbert

“Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Don't resist them - that only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality. Let things flow naturally forward in whatever way they like”.

- Lao Tzu

“The only way to make sense out of change is to plunge into it, move with it, and join the dance”.

- Alan Watts

“Life belongs to the living and he who lives must be prepared for changes”.

- Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

“Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything”.

- George Bernard Shaw

When we are no longer able to change a situation - we are challenged to change ourselves.

- Viktor E. Frankl
