Summer fun for kids

Well, it's that time again for me. It's summer time and being a teacher means I'm off work for two whole months. You may be looking for cheap summer activities for kids to do during the summer. There's no doubt that it is nice to have some time off. I'd be lying to you if I told you that I did not get really bored after a couple of weeks. The main thing I am responsible for during the summer is coming up with some good solid activities for my two children to do during the summer. It seems that usually if we leave the house during the summer, it involves spending money somewhere. Even the price of gas has to be taken into consideration these days. Just driving around looking for places to go will still cost you money with gas near $4.00 per gallon lately. I'm going to tell you some of the things that I do with my kids here to give you some ideas that may help you out with your own kids this summer.

You can't go wrong with a trip to a pool somewhere during the summer.

Swimming Fun in the Summer

Here in Louisiana it gets just blazing hot during the summer. One of things we have here at my house is a large above ground swimming pool. It was purchased second hand when my son was a little fellow. We bought it second hand. Normally pools like this cost over $4000 at a local store in Baton Rouge. We have put plenty of money into this pool with new liners over the years and pool chemicals and new motors. I can say for sure though that my kids have had loads of fun in our pool for the money. You too may be level to find a pool like ours for saleI second hand through your local classified ads. If not, you may consider a new pool. Sure, it will cost at first but there is loads of value with all the use you will get out of it. it's great that they both are decent swimmers for their ages. If you have access to a swimming pools at a friends house or maybe a local health club or neighborhood park, you can kill an entire day swimming and having fun at your local pool.

Summer Camp

Summer camp at at local recreational facility, daycare or church is a great idea for kids in the summer. Of course, this will cost parents some money but the kids will be well monitored and in a safe environment. Most camps have calendars made out to show when special trips and activities are planned. This lets parents and campers plan ahead in order to not miss out on the special days that the camps have planned. Many camps hire either high school students or college students that are good young people and looking for a fun summer job. I have even worked as a counselor at camps in the past and I made some great friends and have some fond memories working with the kids. Summer camp is a great thing to keep your kids active and involved in fun activities.

Summer Reading and the Library

A visit to your local library is one of the great and cheap summer activities for kids. We do this every summer. We are lucky enough to have a beautiful new library only a couple of miles from our home. A summer reading program for kids is a must in my opinion. It is a proven fact that kids that read more do better in the their school work in all subjects. Take some time out of each day during the summer and force your kids to read for maybe at least 30 minutes every day. Most libraries have summer reading programs in place where local businesses donate prizes and coupons and that sort of thing to help reward the kids for their summer reading efforts. Our local library does indeed have such a program in place. Take those children to the library every two weeks or so and make them check out a few books each time. it's a great and cheap summer activity for the kids and an important thing children need to do to prevent a summer "brain drain."

Sports for Kids During the Summer

My son is a good athlete and very much into his football and basketball playing. I am currently coaching him on a local youth team in high level AAU basketball. The local high school coaches are offering a one week summer camp for kids his age and we usually like to try to go to these. This summer I have him signed up for two separate one week long basketball camps and one football camp. How much does this cost you may wonder? Well, it is indeed a money raiser for these local high school coaches but they usually give you a preregistration discount. I'm paying about $60 to $70 for a half day, four day camp for him. I think it's a great thing for him to do and it helps him with his ball playing skills and he really does like going to these camps. It's also a good way for the coaches to know who he is and hopefully help him in making the teams at the high school when he gets older or at least for the coaches to kind of know who he is.

Art Camp

For my daughter there is a one week long art camp that she will go to soon. It it at a local art studio and the cost will be about $100 dollars. You may have some art stores or pottery type places near your home that are offering things like this during the summer and not realize it. My daughter went to this same place with her friend on a Friday night just recently and really had a good time with her friend there. That's how they found out about the summer camp offering.

Doctor's Advice for Kids and the Summer

This video below that I found on YouTube is really good. It is a doctor and he has a lot of good things to say about summer activities for kids. I recommend you take the time to watch it.

Volunteering at Our Local Animal Shelter

Volunteer Activities are a Great Idea

Last summer I took my kids to the local animal shelter. Here we volunteered with the animals and were given the task of bathing some puppies This was a great activity for the kids and showed them the importance of helping and volunteering in our local community. My kids love animals so it was the perfect choice. Maybe there are opportunities for your kids to give back in your local community.

Vacation Bible School

A great way to spend a week and further your children's spiritual development is to spend a week at a local church and their vacation bible school. We attend a wonderful little church in our area and they offer a great vacation bible school each summer for children in the kindergarden through the sixth grades. My son is a little too old but he can be a helper with all the kids and there are always other kids around his age that are helpers too. Each summer the week consists of a new theme and there are all sorts of activities scheduled for the kids each day. The children are divided into smaller groups or teams and assigned a counselor for the week. These are offered at almost every local church and are always a good time for the kids. A week for the kids at vacation bible school during the summer will only cost you the gas money to get them there and pick them up. The lessons learned and constructive time spent on their spiritual growth and making new friends will be worth it for sure.

More Ideas for the Summer

Now if you are really on a tight budget there are other things you can do. Here in my local area we have lots of nice parks we go to. We will also go to the local zoo. We have a family membership and can go there anytime we want and as much as we want for one price for the whole year. You may also have a bunch of movies at home that you can watch. There are all kinds of arts and crafts you can do at home. Check out some of the stuff feature above from ebay. We have also gone and visited our local state capitol building for free and that's always a good day. Just use your imagination and plan ahead. You may want to pack some sandwiches and drinks with you to save money when you are out and about As the cost of even fast food can greatly add to your expenses for the day.

I hope this article was helpful to you. I hope you have a great summer with your own kids. Please feel free to leave comments below about some of the ideas you have for summer fun with your kids.

Sounds like a good plan. We're looking at a basketball clinic for our two boys. They're not really into sports, but we just don't want them doing facebook and video games all day!

Have fun, and make sure to squeeze in some Hubs when you can haha!

Thanks a lot Chris. Sorry I was slow to respond. I am getting some good Hub writing here in my spare time so far this summer. I hope you found some good stuff for your kids to do. BTW, I have a Facebook friend that lives somewhere in Hawaii. Ok, thanks and later.
