Augmentin - Side Effects

Augmentin contains a combination of amoxicillin and clavulanate potassium, clavulanate potassium on combination with a penicillin group (amoxicillin) can be used to treat infections caused by bacteria. Augmentin is used to treat infections caused by bacteria in the ears, lungs, skin and the urinary tract. Augmentin is known as Clavam in some Asian countries.
Amoxcillin does not respond to all bacteria, it has no effect on certain types of bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus. Augmentin is an antiboitic and does not respond to any viruses.
The usual adult dosage is one 500-mg tablet every 12 hours or one 250-mg tablet every 8 hours.
Dosage varies with the severity of the infection, patients suffering from infection in the lungs are given 875-mg tablets.
Take the tablet before meal. This makes it less likely to cause stomach upset or discomfort.
- Oral contraceptive pills
- Oral typhoid vaccine
- Medicines used to prevent blood clots
Do not take augmentin if you suffer from liver or kidney impairments.
Possible Side Effects
Allergic reaction includes sweating, swelling of face and lips, inability to breath. Patients allergic to penicillin should not take augmentin since it contains amoxicillin which is a penicillin like group. Fatal allergic reactions have been reported in patients who are allergic to penicillin.
Most common side effects(Mild) include
- Mild skin reactions (skin rash, skin pain, sore throat)
More severe side effects includes
- Skin rashes or itching
- Yellow patches appearing on skin
If you observe any severe side effects or allergic reactions, seek immediate medical attention some of these side effects are very serious. You may need urgent medical attention or hospitalisation.
Reproduction studies carried out on mice given Augmentin showed no signs of harm to foetus due to the medicine. But it is recommended that you take the medication only if clearly needed during pregnancy.
There is a possibility of the medication being transferred to breast milk. Amoxycillin in the medicine can be transferred to breast milk.
