Cognitive Dissonance: Flight or Fight
Heavens Gate and Hale-Bopp
Another UFO based religion cropped up in the 70s based on a NDE (Near Death Experience) by its founder Marshall Applewhite (1931-1997) and his nurse at the time Bonnie Nettles (1927-1985). This group called the Heavens Gate Cult was founded on the believe that the Earth would be wiped clean from a cataclysmic event (flood) and to escape this fate the members would have to leave their vehicles (bodies) and transcend to a large spaceship that was following the path of the Hale-Bopp comet as it traversed the solar system.
The members all committed suicide over three day period in 1997 when the comet Hale-Bopp was passing the Earth. While their was much ridicule and speculation surrounding this mass suicide in 1997 further examination of the comet Hale-Bopp has shown an interesting spacial anomaly following the path of this famous comet.
Chuck Shramek an amateur astronomer in Texas posted some photographs on the internet that clearly show an object following this comet. Initially Mr. Hale who the comet was named after claimed that this object was merely a star, but when other photos showed that it couldn't possibly be a star he switched tactics and claimed that it was due to poorly designed software and diffracted light.
Whatever the case maybe their seems to be quite a bit of evidence supporting the claim that there is indeed a large spacial anomaly following the comet and moving through its tail on it own accord. The information known about this comet makes it unique by anyones standards as it presents itself quite differently than how other comets observed, act.
Since very little is known about what happens to the human soul after death, who is to say that the members of the Heavens Gate cult haven't indeed transcended to the spacial anomaly that is following the Hale-Bopp comet.
Cognitive Dissonance is a term used by social psychologist to describe the feelings of discomfort one feels when confronted with information that is in conflict with ones world view or paradigm. Paradigm is defined as a set of distinct concepts, ideas or thought patterns. In this article Cognitive Dissonance: Flight or Fight I will use examples of how this term affects mankind in their everyday life using modern events as examples to describe the phrase. I will explain why this phrase is so important to critical thinking and why for many people it often leads to contempt prior to investigation.
Dissonance is defined by Webster as a lack of agreement or an instance of inconsistency in belief or disharmony. In this context it should be considered information that is inconsistent with ones beliefs or world view.
The term is credited to author Leon Festinger in his 1956 book When Prophecy Fails which was a true story about a group of people or UFO cult that fervently believed that an impending cataclysmic apocalypse would befall the human race and how they dealt with the psychological consequences when this pre-conceived expectation didn't happen.
The book details this group of people lead by Dorothy Martin, a Chicago housewife, who through automatic writing, channeling and her involvement with L. Ron Hubbards Dianetics movement, the creator of Scientology, starts a community of like minded people that believed that the world would end in a great flood on December 21, 1954.
The people in this community leave their jobs and loved ones, give away or sell their possessions, relocate to a remote part of Michigan and prepare to be rescued by a spaceship from the planet Clarion.
After the failed prophecy Dorothy moved away from the area and started another movement called the Association of Sananda and Sanat Kumara under the alias Sister Thedra and continued to use channeling and be involved with contactee groups until her death in 1992.
What is interesting to note is the date of her failed prophecy December 21, 1954, the same date used in the Mayan Calendar end date of December 21, 2012, only a different year. What if any was the source of her channeling and its intended message to mankind, perhaps it was misinterpreted?
Regardless of the failed prophecy, the book attempts to explain how people with failed expectations deal with the consequences of their deception and its destructive behavior.
Many social psychologist find cognitive dissonance to be present in their patients that believe in one set of ideas or principles only to find out that they have been mislead or deceived upon learning new information, evidence or ideas that prove to be contradictory.
What is important to understand when exploring the subject of cognitive dissonance is that humans react to new information with two basic emotional responses, flight or fight. Those that choose flight often completely ignore any new information that might alter their paradigm or world view. Those that choose to fight the information often respond with anger and attack the source of the information or messenger, constructing arguments that will keep their world view intact.
One perfect example of this is all the new information that has come out after the events of September 11, 2001 in which the governments version of event does not hold up to scientific scrutiny.
The question remains why are so many people reluctant to even look at all the new information about 9/11, presented by architects, engineers, scientist and researchers?
BecauseCognitive Dissonance: Flight or Fight is so persuasive in our society through the practice of conditioning the public to scorn and ridicule anything that doesn't make sense and the fear of being wrong, many people often are contemptuous prior to investigating anything on their own, preferring to allow others to do their thinking for them.
Television has become most people's only source of information, creating an easy way to censor information from the masses. Often times people become aware of information that has been published in books forty, fifty and even a hundred years earlier and believe that this is new because they haven't seen it before on TV.
A prime example is the subject of Nibiru Planet X, many people believe that this a fairly recent subject and yet it has been the main topic of books such as written in 1950 but banned in the US and Worlds In Collision written in 1976. The 12th Planet
The United States began looking for Nibiru Planet X as early as 1894 when Pierce Lowell built one of the first large observatories in the US in Arizona specifically to look for this planetary body, known as the Lowell Observatory.
The subject Nibiru Planet X and the Polar Shift is yet another prime example of cognitive dissonance as many people are simply unwilling to even look at the information available for fear that it will alter their pre-conceived notion of the world. Many people will only believe what they can see with their own eyes, another reason the charade that was 9/11 was so persuading to many.
Below I list some other examples of events, landmarks and ideas that defy logic and often envoke Cognitive Dissonance: Flight or Fight but if one can open their mind and use critical thinking they will at least realize that traditional or orthodox 'science' and beliefs do not provide an adequate explanation.

Learning to open your mind, trust your heart and use critical thinking without settling on the first story that makes sense to you, will often provide you with other possibilities and allow you to find alternative but logical theories and explanations.
What people need to keep in mind is that many times explanations by the mainstream media and officials are designed to mislead the public in an effort to disguise the real truth by offering just a little of the truth and leaving the rest for the public to translate on their own.
Because most people have an innate fear of being wrong they will not ask obvious questions and will just assume they know the answer. The Powers That Be know this and leave a lot of the story out so that it can be changed later, if the public begins to learn the truth.
Soldiers and Suicide
Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome has its roots in Cognitive Dissonance, as often solders cannot justify the behavior and actions they must employ on a daily basis with how they were raised or what they believe. The United States has been at a State of War for over ten years now but in the last three years (2010, 2011 and 2012) soldier suicides have far outnumbered the amount of deaths from combat.
“If you… know the one thing that causes people to commit suicide, please let us know,” General Peter Chiarelli told the Army Times, “because we don’t know.”
The US Media has refused or been forbidden to report on this shocking fact and the US Military claims ignorance when dealing with this subject. Mental injury or PTSD is frowned upon in the military as a moral weakness and swept under the rug.
Like an addict in recovery, soldiers have a difficult time relating combat experiences with anyone that hasn't shared the experience, it is a trust issue. Because the military sees this moral problem as a mental weakness many soldiers have a hard time even admitting they have a problem (denial). The feeling of isolation when returning Stateside becomes problematic for soldiers trying to reintegrate themselves into society.
Feelings of guilt, remorse, emptiness and rage often times overwhelm these men and woman and they can't seem to get over the feeling that they are at fault for these feelings, that they have a moral weakness. When in fact quite the opposite is true, yet they begin to feel that they cannot forgive themselves whether the feelings are justified or not.
"You may not have actually done something wrong by the law of war, but by your own humanity you feel that it's wrong," says Ritchie, now chief clinical officer at the District of Columbia's Department of Mental Health.
They begin to feel trapped or backed into a corner and that taking their own lives is the only solution. While there is very little recognition in our society for these kinds of feelings, only by recognizing the problem will we ever have a chance of helping our soldiers recover from this.
I suspect that it is similar to addiction in the fact that it will never truly go away and these feeling will forever haunt our soldiers on the edge of their consciousness.
9/11 and Cognitive Dissonance
I have found that twelve years later the trauma inflicted on the American psyche from the events of 9/11 prevent many people from being willing to even talk about this subject. A friend of mine from AA that firmly believes that the concept of contempt prior to investigation prevents many people from ever recovering fully from the mental disease of alcoholism, refuses to even contemplate the reason for the collapse of building seven a true case of Cognitive Dissonance: Flight or Fight.
For those of you are not familiar with building seven, it was a 47 story building that collapsed on its imprint a little after 5:20 p.m. on the evening of September 11, 2001. This building was not hit by an airplane and had suffered very little fire damage, but interestingly enough was the command center for the emergency workers during the event and housed all the related documents concerning Citigroup and the WorldCom Bankruptcy trial. It also housed the field offices of the SEC, FBI, CIA and NSA.
According to a Zogby poll conducted in 2006 43% of Americans had never heard of the collapse of building seven. The questioned was . . .
"World Trade Center Building 7 is the 47-story skyscraper that was not hit by any planes during the September 11th attacks, but still totally collapsed later the same day. This collapse was not investigated by the 9/11 Commission. Are you aware of this skyscraper's collapse, and if so do you believe that the Commission should have also investigated it? Or do you believe that the Commission was right to only investigate the collapse of the buildings which were directly hit by airplanes?"
This is a prime example of how cognitive dissonance works, the fact that almost half of the 1,200 polled in the survey weren't even aware of this information shows just how reluctant many people are to even considering new information that might alter their world view.
Because of the trauma the public experienced from this national tragedy many people have chosen the very natural reaction of flight or in this case denial. Any new information that might pose a threat to their preconceived notion of how the world works is quickly dismissed as fantasy, never to be considered. This reaction is caused by the fear that this new information will create dissonance in our fundamental belief of our country and government.
Anytime a persons belief's are challenged it creates fear and anxiety and our natural mental defense systems are triggered to protect us from these emotions. Denial which is considered one of the most primitive of human emotions, is easier for most humans to deal with. This is one of the reasons so many alcoholics and addicts continue to suffer even though intellectually they know they are harming themselves and their loved ones.
Americans have grown up with the security of being a nation that has never been attacked or suffered from terrorism, then suddenly without warning we find ourselves in this surreal situation. The TV News stations are playing the event over and over again and America is bombarded (excuse the pun) with these events watching their fellow citizens die horrible deaths.
The information is overwhelming and confusing, real fear sets in, rumors circulate, people become uncomfortable and afraid and eventually their minds simply shut down. It becomes easier to deny the overwhelming amount of information, accept the governments version and move on never looking back.
There is also a group that inevitably feels that something is wrong but they can't quite figure out what it is knowing deep in their hearts that if they look to closely they might not like the answers and so that feeling alone prevents many from investigating further. This mindset is also a form of denial, like my friend in AA who knows instinctively that something is not quite right about the official version but is unwilling to look at any new evidence from a fear of having his paradigm of the world unravel.
When I first saw the airplane hit the building I instantly knew something wasn't quite right about the footage I just saw with my own eyes but for the life of me I couldn't figure it out. Then when I saw the first tower collapse I knew for a fact that what I just saw defied reason . . .
"I thought how could an airplane flying into a building cause the whole thing to fall the way it did, I expected it to topple and pieces to fall off, but not turn to dust right before my very eyes!"
That whole scenario was very confusing to me and I kept wondering how a building that size could turn into dust, had I not seen it for myself I would never had believed it was possible.
Then traveling by airplane just a few years later, I became transfixed by the digital readout on the back of the seat in front of me displaying the altitude and speed of the aircraft. As we were hurtling down the runway to take off, the speed kept getting faster and faster, going from 80 mph to 150 mph, lifting off the ground we rose higher and higher and the speed kept increasing.
The thought occurred to me that if I was in a car getting onto the highway I would accelerate to the speed limit before I got on the highway, if I could, so that I could match my speed with the other cars. So why wouldn't a commercial aircraft just instantly go to its top speed as soon as it lifted off the ground?
Of course the thought hit me, that because of the way a commercial airliner is designed and the fact that air is denser the closer we are to the ground, that a commercial airliner is incapable of reaching its maximum speed below thirty-thousand feet where the air isn't as dense.
Suddenly I knew why the events of 9/11 of the airplane hitting the building, that we all saw on TV, didn't seem right to me, the airplane was flying too fast. Upon landing I found a computer and began searching for the estimated flight speed of the airplane was flying when it hit the second tower.
It didn't take long before I found what I was looking for and I sat there stunned by the information in front of me, I felt like I had been punched in the stomach, based on computations from surrounding landmarks, scientist had determined the plane was flying between 537 miles per hour and 587 mph, way too fast for a commercial airliner below 30 thousand feet.
"The government's calculations put the speed of the first plane at 494 mph, and the second at 586 mph. The MIT analysis determined the first plane was traveling 429 mph, and the second 537 mph," The Times said.
"These guys exceeded even the emergency dive speed," Verdier said. "It's off the chart." Boeing spokeswoman Liz Verdier told the Times.
Boeing 767 cruise speed: 530 mph (850 km/h) at 35,000 ft (10,675 m)
Of course I realized that the tower was probably only a couple thousand feet in height at best and then it hit me that if I could figure this out then how many millions of other people knew this as well? Certainly any commercial airline pilot knew, or for that matter any pilot anywhere. The government certainly knew, which lead my thinking to if it wasn't a commercial airliner then what did everyone see on TV that day, talk about a shock to your system!
My mind began racing in circles trying to make sense of this new information. What did people see that day, animation could fool TV audiences and had done so for years. So if Boeing 767's couldn't fly at those speeds at that altitude then what was it everyone saw on that day?
But what did the people on the ground see?
What about all the people that were supposedly on the airplane?
What about all the cell phone calls?
What about all the people that lost loved ones on those planes?
Obviously something hit those buildings, but what could fly that fast and look like a commercial airliner from the ground?
Needless to say this began a journey for me to discover the truth for myself and although the path has had many obstacles and has fundamentally changed my life forever, the view is breathtaking, stunning and quite literally mind blowing.
My search for the truth about the events of 9/11 didn't stop with this event alone, as I realized that if The Powers That Be would lie to the American people about this national tragedy in which so many of our fellow Americans were murdered, what else would they lie to us about?
It quite literally lead me down the rabbit hole of truth and now nothing amazes me anymore. The World we live in is so fundamentally different than what everyone believes it is no wonder that folks don't accidentally stumble upon the truth, because 90% of the world would never believe it.
To find out what I believe happened on that fateful day go to 9/11 Truth According To Me and read the article with an open mind and critical thinking.

- What Is Nibiru
What is Nibiru explores what is known about the planet and how it will directly affect the Earth. When NASA knew of its existence and why they chose to keep it a secret.
Obviously cognitive dissonance prevents many people from learning the truth on a wide variety of topics from the ancient pyramids at Giza to 9/11 and Nibiru Planet X and the Polar Shift. The Powers That Be are well aware of the human psychological profile and have been manipulating it for thousands of years through disinformation and censorship.
They are the very ones that plant conspiracies in the first place to mislead the public and further their campaigns of disinformation and misdirection. When many different stories about events ideas or concepts are in the public eye they prevent the public from distinguishing the truth for themselves, this keeps them chasing their tails and tracking down false leads.
They are well aware that by providing distractions such as sporting events, celebrity news, Reality TV, movies, TV shows, documentaries and fantasy books that they can reveal just enough of the truth to keep people reasonable informed without revealing the truth.
They know that the majority of mankind will never investigate anything for themselves as long as they have a reliable source to tell them what to think.
They are well aware that if they make the task of daily living a difficult and stressful enough chore that most people will not have enough time or energy at the end of the day to investigate anything for themselves and will prefer to relax and allow others to do their thinking for them.
In 2003 when the US Supreme Court ruled that Television News Stations were NOT required to tell the public the truth it open the doors to even further censorship of the American people. Incidentally not one TV News Station in America covered this story, coincidence hardly!
What helped me tremendously was going to college at an age (46) when others of my generation had already established a firm set of principles, ideas and paradigm of how the world works and what their beliefs were. This came right after I had gotten sober where keeping an open mind and trying out a new belief system was paramount to my recovery.
I was able to spend long hours researching many subjects of interest, reading books about ancient history and discoveries and learning new concepts and ideas that people my age simply didn't have the time for. During this time, initially to save money and help eliminate distraction from my studies, I turned off my cable and sold my TV and joined the World Wide Web.
No longer able to get my 'news' from the TV I turned to alternative sources and this in itself helped me to find a plethora of information unavailable to me before. Hopefully in this article Cognitive Dissonance: Flight or Fight I have shed some light on a particularly troubling aspect of our culture and given my readers the courage to understand that avoiding learning the truth is a very real social phenomenon for many reasonably informed people.
