Unusual Dinosaurs That Once Roamed The Earth
Dinosaurs are considered by many to be huge, fierce reptiles that roamed the earth millions of years ago. This is not completely true. The dinosaurs were not all huge. Some were quiet small.
The dinosaurs that are meat were usually larger than the plant eating dinosaurs.
Many people think all dinosaurs are extinct. This is not true. Birds are dinosaurs and they are still around. The Kiwi bird from New Zealand is a good example. Fossil remains of the Kiwi bird have been discovered that go back 8 million ears.
The present day crocodile also goes back millions of years to the time of the dinosaur.
The Archaecopteryx Dinosaur Restoration
The information we know about the Archaeopteryx comes from 10 fossils that were found. They had a tail that was long and lizard-like. They had wings that were covered with feathers. It is believed the Archaeopteryx was a very smart species. They had very good hearing, eyesight, balance, speed, and intelligence.
They were the size of one of our modern day medium sized birds. Their wings were broad and had rounded tips. They had interdental plates, and they had long chevrons on their tail.
The Archaeopteryx was capable of flying. It did not have a breast bone, so they probably were not very good at flying. They had the ability to fly, but they were not built for it.
The Albertosaurus Reconstruction
Albertosaurus means “Alberta Lizard.” They were meat eaters. They probably ate slower dinosaurs like the duck-billed dinosaurs.
They lived 73 to 70 million years ago in the Cretaceous period With the Tyrannosaurus and Spinosaurus. A number of Albertosaurus dinosaur skeletons were found together in Canada, and this suggests they lived in herds.
Their eyesight was not very good, but they were good predators. Their back legs were strong, and they were able to run fast. They probably could run to 19 mph.
In the area of their eyes, they had 2 small horns that were blunt. They were 30 feet long and weighed 2 tons.
The Allsosaurus Dinosaur Reconstruction
The body of The Allosaurus was deep and narrow, and the neck was short and strong. They had 2 horns in front of their eyes and 2 lumps behind their eyes. The Allosaurus was 12 meters long, 5 meters tall and weighed around 2 tons. Their arms were short and strong. The had large curved teeth and their bite was strong. Their teeth would be replaced regularly. They had a small head for a predator.
It is believed the Allosaurus did not stay near the nest to protect the eggs, babies, or feed the babies.
They were a very active predator and the top predator in North America in the Jurassic period. They also lived in Africa and Australia.
The Allosaurus would gain 330 pounds per year until they were 15 years old.
The Ankylosaurus Dinosaur Reconstruction
The Ankylosaurus is covered with armor. The armor is made up of tough bones and scales that were embedded in its skin.
They were very large animals being 30 feet long, 6 feet wide and 4 feet tall. The Ankylosaurus had 4 feet, and its front legs were shorter than its hind legs. Their tail was huge and like a club. They had 2 rows of spikes on the side of their body. They also had horns that went backward from the back of their head.
The Ankylosaurus was a huge dinosaur that ate plants. It is believed they used their large club tail to defend themselves. The Ankylosaurus was hard for its predators to get to because of their spikes, armor, and large club tail. The Ankylosaurus was a short creature, so it had to eat low-growing plants.
The Ankylosaurus lived during the cretaceous period until dinosaurs became extinct 65 million years ago. Fossils of Ankylosaurus have been found in the United States in Montana and in Alberta, Canada. There has not been a complete skeleton of the Ankylosaurus found.
The Brachiosaurus Dinosaur Reconstruction
The Brachiosaurus was probably the largest, heaviest and dumbest of all the dinosaurs found so far. They were a huge dinosaur that may have weighed 60 thousand to a staggering 170 thousand pounds. They walked the earth using all 4 of their legs. Their front legs were longer than their back ones. Their body was huge, and their neck was exceptionally long. /their head was egg-shaped and small.
The Brachiosaurus ate plants. They were so large they needed to eat a lot of them. It is believed they needed to consume 400 pounds of vegetation every day.
The Brachiosaurus is thought to have been the dumbest animal around at the time. They had no defense against predators, so it is thought they just smashed them.
The Brachiosaurus lived 145 to 155 million years ago during the Jurassic period. There have been fossils discovered in North America and Africa. In North America, the area they were found in is the present day state of Colorado.
Some people say they were warm blooded, and others say they were cold blooded. It is unlikely they were cold-blooded because they would have only ate 100 pounds of food a day and it would have taken them 100 years to reach their full size.
The Ceratosaurus Dinosaur Reconstruction
Ceratosaurus means “Horned Lizard.” The Ceratosaurus dinosaur was a meat eater with strong jaws with the blade like teeth. They ate large dinosaurs, but it is believed they also ate fish and crocodiles.
The Ceratosaurus lived 153 to 148 million years ago in the Jurassic period.
Their eyes had horns above and in front of them. They had a large horn on their nose. The Ceratosaurus had a flexible body and a deep tail. These 2 features would have made the good swimmers.
Their skeletons have been found in Colorado and Utah in the U.S.A.
They were 13 feet tall and 20 feet long. They weighed about 1 ton.
The Cryptoclidus Dinosaur Reconstruction
The fossils of ancient sea creatures were discovered before dinosaur fossils. The fossils were easier to find in the shallow moving water. The Cryptoclidus was a common sea creature during the dinosaur age.
The Cryptoclidus had an unusual bone structure. They did not have flippers or fins like most of the ocean creatures. Instead, they were equipped with paddles like a turtle has. It is believed they were graceful swimmers. Their necks were very long, and this helped them catch fish. It is believed they spent a lot of time in the water, and they dug around in the mud.
There are some people that believe the Cryptoclidus is the Loch Ness Monster from Scotland, but there is no proof of this.
The Desmatosuchus Dinosaur Reconstruction
The remains of the Desmatosuchus were found in Arizona and Texas. The Desmatosuchus is from the aclosaurs group. It is said to be the largest creature of this era.
They were 15.75 feet long. They had a snout like a shovel that they probably used to dig up plants. The Desmatosuchus was a plant eater. They ate low growing plants.
The edge of their back had 2 rows of spikes on it. They also had two 45cm spikes that went sideways from above their shoulders. They used these spikes to defend themselves against larger carnivores. Their head was left just about unprotected, so they were still vulnerable.
The Dilophosaurus Dinosaur Reconstruction
The Dilophosaurus was a meat-eating dinosaur that lived around 193 million years ago in North America and China during the Seminarian time of the Early Jurassic Period. They had 2 crests on their skill. They were an ancient reptile called the “two-crested lizard.”
They appear to have been small for a meat eater but they were very strong and could run fast on their hind legs.
They were 8 feet tall and 6 meters long. Their front legs had flexible claws. They may have been a scavenger because their jaws were too weak to catch and kill prey. It I believed they would get food from dead prey after someone else was through eating.
Fossils have been found in areas that suggest they lived in small groups.
The Dimetrodon Dinosaur Reconstruction
Many people call the Dimetrodon a dinosaur, but they were on earth 260 million years ago during the Permian period and this was at the time of the dinosaurs.
It is believed they were 9 feet long. Their legs were on the side of their body and not under them. Much like the day lizard they had to move from side to side to get around. They had what is referred to as a “sail” on their back that was quite large.
The Dimetrodon was active during the day. They were cold-blooded creatures, so their temperature had to be adjusted. During the day if they needed to get warm they would face their “sail” toward the sun. They would get warm and be able to move around and hunt for food. They were meat eaters. They had a set of teeth for biting and another set for tearing.
The Dimetrodon's fossils have been found in Russia, Eastern Europe, and the United States. When they lived in the United States, they were found in what is now Texas and Oklahoma.
The Edaphosaurus Dinosaur Reconstruction
The Edaphosaurus lived 260 million years ago during the Permian period. This was before most of the dinosaurs roamed the earth. The Edaphosaurus resembled the Dimetrodon in the way it looked except they were smaller. They were probably about 8 feet long. When they walked, they moved from side to side like most lizards. The Edaphosaurus back had a sail on it.
The Edaphosaurus moved around during the day. They were cold blooded creatures and to get warm during the day they would tilt their sail toward the sun.
The Edaphosaurus was a plant eater.
The fossils of the Edaphosaurus have been found in Russia, Eastern Europe, and the United States. They have been found in Oklahoma and Teas in the United States.
The Elasmosaurus Dinosaur Reconstruction
The Elasmosaurus is much like the Cryptoclidus but twice as big. The Elasmosaurus lived in water. They had flippers and were meat eaters. Their neck was very long. During the Triassic Era, dinosaurs were not that large, but as time went on they got larger. In the Cretaceous Era, they were much larger.
The Elasmosaurus is not a dinosaur. The fossils show the Elasmosaurus got air from the surface like a dolphin. They believe they swam near the water surface in what is now Kansas because this is where they have found all of the fossils.
A complete fossil of the Elasmosaurus was discovered in 1868. When the skeleton was put together, the head was put on the tail by mistake. It stayed like this until 1870 when it was changed because someone noticed the tail was made up of neck bones.
The Velociraptor Dinosaur Reconstruction
The Velociraptor was a fast dinosaur that ate meat. They were a rapture. It is believed they were around 6 feet long and 2 feet tall. They weighed around 45 pounds. Their neck was 'S' shaped. They had an egg shaped head that was usually about 9 inches long. They had thin legs, and it is believed they could run very fast. They would stand on 2 feet, and it is believed they were good jumpers.
The Velociraptor could run at 40 mph for a short distance, and this helped him catch his prey. They had claws that were 4 inches long that they used to tear their prey apart. They were small, so they hunted in groups. They are thought to have been one of the smartest creatures in the dinosaur group.
The fossils discovered show they lived 80 million years ago in the crustaceous period. They preferred to live in the hotter areas They liked to live in hot areas that had fresh water.
The Velociraptor fossils have been found in Eastern Asia, mainly in Russia, China and Mongolia.
For a long time, it was thought the Velociraptor had scales, but it has been discovered they were covered with feathers.
The Corythosaurus Dinosaur Reconstruction
Eighty million years ago during the late cretaceous period, there was a crested duck-billed dinosaur called the Corythosaurus. The name Corythosaurus translates to “Helmet Lizard” in Greek.
The first Corythosaurus skeleton was found in Alberta, Canada in the Red Deer River Valley.
This dinosaur was over 30 feet long and weighed 4 tons. Being they were so large they were easy prey for the Tyrannosaurus Rex.
The front of their skull was flat and stuck out like a beak. They were plant eaters and their beak worked great fro collecting leaves and twigs on branches that were high in the trees. It is believed they liked leaves, twigs from magnolia trees.
It is believed the Corythosaurus had a good sense of smell and could make loud noises. It is thought the loud noises were used to warn others.
The Corythosaurus had webbed feet similar to a duck. It is believed they were very timid. It is also thought they were herding animals and nested in colonies.
The Troodon Dinosaur Reconstruction
It is believed the Troodon was a very slender bird like dinosaur that was 6 feet long and weighed 110 pounds. Some believe they had feathers. They are thought to have walked on their hind legs.
Fossils of the Troodon have been found in Antarctica. If the Troodon did exist there it would have been the largest dinosaur living in the Antarctic. These findings add support for the theory that some dinosaurs were warm-blooded. Fossils of the Troodon have also been found in Mont, Wyoming and Alaska.
They had large eye sockets, so it is believed they were capable of seeing in a dark environment..
The Troodon was a carnivore and they ate small lizards and mammals. Their long claws and sharp curved teeth probably allowed them to kill large animals like young duck-billed dinosaurs, There is also evidence they ate some plants.
Some people think the Troodon was the smartest of the sauran dinosaurs.
