Drama Queens - How To Handle The Beasts

Updated on April 27, 2016

Does drama follow you everywhere you go?

If the answer is YES, chances are that you are the one creating it.

Definition of a Drama Queen

DRAMA means Dumb Retards Asking for More Attention.

Drama queens are people who love to exaggerate any situation to a ridiculous degree, criticize everything and everyone around them whenever they get the chance and overreact to the most trivial things possible.

Though the term has "queen" in it, which I believe is somewhat biased, it is not restricted to over-reactive women alone. The term is also used for men with similar characteristics, "drama" being the keyword here.

Drama queens CRAVE attention and do not care how they get it.

How to Spot a Drama Queen

You don't really need much effort to spot a drama queen, they will announce themselves to everyone in the room and will make sure that you notice them. However, if you are a bit of a dummy in these matters or want to compare someone against a check list, here are a few traits that all drama queens will show.

  • All drama queens genuinely believe that they are constant victims of human abuse.

  • They often twist the truth to prove the above point to everyone around them.

  • Drama queens crave for attention and love to hijack conversations to make it about them.

  • They have a compulsive need to make a grandiose entrance and announce it as well.

  • They love to criticize and gossip about people, even if it means spreading malice or cooking up stories.

  • Essentially, drama queens are narcissists who think that the whole world exists to cater to their needs and happiness. They consider themselves God's gift to mankind.

  • They have an inflated ego and a huge sense of entitlement. It is your duty to make them happy, else they will make your miserable.

Drama queens do the above things to get attention, draw sympathy to gain benefits, or simply cannot tolerate peace in the lives of others.

Okay, now that we have established what a drama queen is, let us see how to handle such human specimens, in an effort to make things smoother and less dramatic for ourselves.

1. Avoid The Drama Queen

The best way to deal with a drama queen is to not deal with them at all. Avoid running into them at all costs. This is really the best possible solution that will save you from loads of trouble.

  • If you see a known drama queen walking towards you or coming from the opposite direction, try to change your route. Pretend like something amazing suddenly caught your interest or you forgot something and need to take an about turn.

  • If changing your route looks too obvious and you fear that you might get caught, a rather good alternative is to pretend to be extremely busy.

  • Your cell-phone will be particularly useful for this purpose. Phone calls are the only conversations that no drama queen can ever hijack from you, unless of course your phone suddenly starts ringing while you pretend to speak into it.

2. When Avoiding is Difficult

There are times when it is impossible to escape the drama queen, either because you close friend or family member is a drama queen, or you were not quick enough to move out of the way or he/she made his/her way to you with some focussed objective.

Whatever the reason, now you are in potential danger of pissing the queen off. Don't worry, there are ways to mitigate the situation.

  • Just be polite and try to keep the conversation as casual as possible.

  • If something is being asked out of you, be cautious when giving your answer. Don't give out any information about yourself or someone else that could be used by the drama queen in a negative manner.

  • Try to get away as fast as possible. There are some useful self-ring phone apps, you can use these to get yourself out of a conversation by faking a phone call.

  • Don't let them realize it though. Else they will make an issue out of it right in front of you or worse, behind your back.

Wish I Could Run Away!

3. When a Drama Queen Confronts You in Public

If a drama queen confronts you in public, his/her obvious intention is to create a scene. The more you react, the more that purpose will be served.

  • Never lose your temper or yell back at the drama queen.

  • Don't get agitated and don't try to offer explanation, because logic will not work on them. The fact that they have confronted you in public shows that they are not looking for a peaceful settlement.

  • Use laughter and mockery to tick him/her off. For example, if they are your peers, you can taunt them by saying - Aw look! You are such a drama queen! Why don't you find something useful to do?

  • Be prepared for a fresh tantrum, because drama queens hate being called a drama queen. It is one trigger that always works with them. The calmer you are, the more aggressive they will become. Use their weakness to bring them down.

  • Once you have succeeded in enraging the drama queen to the point of ridicule, they will just make a fool of themselves, while the audience will see you for the calm and mature person that you are. Of course, you will need some nerve to pull this one off.

4. Never Leak Any Personal Information

Remember that drama queens feed on malice and gossip. If at any point, a drama queen has taken a sudden dislike towards you, he/she will try to retaliate by disclosing your personal information to others, making you a target of scandalous gossip. While your original story may not really be that scandalous, the queens know how to spice things up, or even hatch stories from scratch.

  • The solution is to refrain from discussing anything personal about yourself and others when a drama queen is present.

  • If the drama queen asks something about your personal life, make your answer as vague as possible without giving any concrete information, so that he/she has no content to use against you.

5. Use The No Comments Strategy with the Drama Queen

Always refrain from passing comments about anyone in front of a drama queen. Sometimes, such people employ the technique of criticizing other people, in an effort to make you do the same.

Be cautious, it is just a way of fooling you into open criticism, which can and will be held against you in a public place. Soon you may learn that the drama queen has gone and told that other person about you saying certain nasty things about him/her.

Of course, don't expect it to be the accurate version. It will be a recipe mixed with much more dramatic ingredients. There's no predicting how and when bomb will suddenly go off.

6. Don't Be Extra Nice, They Don't Deserve It!

If a drama queen is pissed with you for no apparent fault of yours, or maybe because you simply didn't pamper his/her ego when he/she wanted you to, don't ever apologize.

You may think that by being extra nice, you are mitigating further drama. Believe me, it will blow up right in your face. Here is why.

  • Drama queens love to put people down and they will take great pleasure in telling everyone about how you fell on your knees and begged for apology for the heinous sins you committed against the ever-suffering queen.

  • It is better to be gossiped about as an arrogant person rather than an idiotic doormat without any self-esteem, because that is how you will be projected if you stoop before the drama queen.

Time For Execution

Now that you have learnt how to tackle the dreadful drama queen, be prepared to face the world. Chances are that you already knew these tactics but maybe never got around to execute them.

Stay calm and beat the drama, and maybe just for fun, try introducing two drama queens to each other, and then just sit back and watch the fun.

Totally agree Larry, ignoring them is the best thing to do. Sometimes I am guilty of provoking them just to sit back and watch the fun :)

Thanks for visiting DzyMsLizzy. Nothing worse than having drama queens right within the family, can't even be avoided.

Uh--yeah. I have a couple of these in my life now, that I cannot avoid; they are family. Ugh.

Nothing to be done but try and avoid or walk away.
