Environmental Global Issues: Global Warming, Acid Rain, Depletion of Ozone Layer Effects

Updated on January 13, 2013

I have talked about Different Types of Ecosystems: Natural And Artificial Ecosystem Now I think I have to write article about environment degradation to get some awareness.

In the 20th century, the global mean temperature has increased by about 0.6 degree Celsius. The average temperature of the earth may increase by 1.4 degree Celsius to 5.8 degree Celsius by the year 2100 from 1990.

Population explosion has increased the demand of fuel wool leading to a fuel wood crisis followed by deforestation, soil-erosion and silting up of dams. Every year, an additional 6 million hectares of productive land turns into a desert and more than 11 hectares of forests are destroyed. We all are responsible for this result.

Acid rain is destroying forests, lakes, productive soil and precious monuments.Given below are some of the changes in environment occurring as a result of environmental pollution.

global warming and greenhouse effect

Global Warming and Green House Effect:

Have you ever seen a greenhouse? Most greenhouses look like a small glasshouse. Greenhouses are used to grow plants, especially in the winter. Greenhouses work heat from the sun.

The glass panels if the greenhouse let in light but keep heat from escaping. This is causes the Greenhouse to heat up, much like inside of a car parked in sunlight, and keeps the plants warm enough to live in the winter. It will cause too difference in temperature in seasons.

The earth's atmosphere is all around us. It is the air we breathe. Greenhouse gases in the atmosphere behave much like the glass-panes in a greenhouse. The greenhouse effect is important. Without Green House Effect, the atmosphere would not be warm enough for humans to live.

But if greenhouse effect becomes stronger, it could be make the earth warmer than usual. Even a little extra warming may cause problems for Humans, Plants and Animals. The greenhouse effect is the rose in temperature that earth experiences because certain gases in the atmosphere trap energy from the sun.

the greenhouse effect poses the following serious environmental threats:

  • Rise in Sea Level
  • Frequent floods
  • Food Production
  • Effect on Range of Species Distribution:

Major sources responsible for greenhouse effect are CO2, CH4, CFCs, N2O.

Acid Rain Effect on Taj Mahal

Acid Rain:

As the same suggests acid rain means the presence of excessive acids in rainwater. Acid rain has an average 5.6 pH level (the pH scale measures the acidity). Acid rain or Acid precipitation results when these compounds along with the other organic chemicals are carried to the earth by rain, fog, dew or snow.

This atmospheric pollutants get deposited in soils, vegetation, surface waters, property and materials when these condensed water vapors come down in the form of acid rain causing immense because of the acidity of the pollutants. Acid rain is mainly because of factories. and low quality fuel.

Depletion of ozone Layer
Depletion of ozone Layer

Depletion of ozone Layer:

Stratospheric ozone plays a vital role by protecting the living organisms from the harmful effects of ultraviolet radiations (is an electromagnetic radiation). A layer of ozone about 20- 25 km is present in the atmosphere in very small quantities, the highest concentration being at high altitudes where it is formed by the reaction of ultraviolet rays on Oxygen.

Ozone is formed in the stratosphere. The rise in temperature in the stratosphere results because the ozone layer absorbs the ultraviolet radiations, causing temperature inversion limits the vertical mixing of pollutants, thereby causing the dispersal of pollutants over large areas near the earth's surfaces.

If these three main problems don't solved than our end is near to us. I hope this article will help many people to understand environmental problems.
