Events after the Millennium

Updated on May 10, 2016

What Happens When the 1000 Years Expires?

I have previously introduced you to the Millennium, a period of 1000 years, which began when the Lord Jesus descended to earth at His Second Coming (see article here). We now turn our attention to events which will occur after the close of that period.

Satan Released from Bottomless Pit

For 1000 years the earth, during the Millennial reign of the Lord Jesus Christ, enjoyed a most wonderful period of peace and prosperity. Many people at that time may wonder what will happen when the 1000 years expire. The Bible informs us. We are told in Revelation 20.7 that Satan, also known as the Devil, will be released from his prison and "will go out to deceive the nations in the four corners of the earth -- Gog and Magog -- to gather them for battle."

From outward appearances it would seem that Satan, would have the capacity to deliver a final fatal blow to the Lord Jesus Christ and the Christians at Jerusalem. Satan, upon his release, will gather together an army which in number will be "like the sands on the sea shore" (Revelation 20.8 - 9). They will "surround the camp of God's people, the city He loves (Jerusalem)." I have mentioned a number of times in my previous articles that "Christ can do just what no one else can do." In this case He will bring down fire from heaven which will devour them (Revelation 20.9), Satan will be seized and thrown into the Lake of Burning Sulphur where the Beast and the False Prophet had been thrown 1000 years before, and where all three will be tormented day and night for ever. (Revelation 20.10)

The Great White Throne Judgments

Revelation 20. 11-13 tell us about the Lord sitting on a Great White Throne with people before Him about to be judged.

I have read a number of comments from Biblical Scholars who believe that from this throne the Lord Jesus Christ will judge every person born since His death and resurrection. I have a strong alternate view on this subject, and believe that Christians will have been judged when in heaven and been awarded crowns according to their service for Him. They will not appear before Christ at the Great White Throne as this judgment is for all unsaved people.

Revelation 20. 11-15 inform us about this most important judgment. In that section of the scriptures we see the Lord Jesus Christ seated upon His throne with books around Him. One of the books is called the "Book of Life" in which is recorded the name of every Christian. Other books were also there in which is recorded the deeds done by people on earth. People are judged according to what they had done during their lifetime . Scripture then informs us that if anyone's name is not found in the Book of Life, that person would be "thrown into the Lake of Fire" (Revelation 20.15).

It is important to note that a resurrection must have taken place, for we read that "The sea gave up the dead that were in it, and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them."(Revelation 20.13-14) There can be no escape here. Every unsaved person is going to come before Christ whether they believe it or not, or whether they disapprove of it, or do not wish to be involved. This judgment is upon them and God tells us that their final destination is The Lake of Fire

Renovation of the Earth

Now with only Christians surviving and with the Devil, Beast and False Profit disposed of in the Lake of Sulphur, and with wickedness gone, it would appear that all is now ready for the Lord Jesus Christ to hand over to God the Father the perfect Eternal Kingdom.(1 Cor. 15.24) One thing remains. This old sinful world needs renovating, and the Apostle Peter tells us in 2 Peter 3. 10-11 that this will be done by fire.

To Think About

Dear Reader, as I wrote these comments I had mixed emotions. I know that I, a sinner, have been saved by His amazing grace and love, and that I will be delighted to spend my future with the Lord. On the other hand I am distressed at the vast majority of people who have rejected the Lord Jesus Christ as Saviour and who will spend their eternal life in the Lake of Fire. Friend, just where do you stand? I implore you to earnestly examine your position. We are all born into a world of sin and need to repent of those sins, tell God that you have done and said things that are wrong for which you are sorry, and ask that through His gracious love, care, and forgiveness you need your life to be transformed. Please don't wait or put it off. Ask Him to do this for you to-day.
