The beginning of the rest of my life! How study abroad changed my life.

Beautiful Campus Life

The beginning of the rest of my life

When you think of Southeast Asia, what is the first thing that pops into your head? Is it the exotic foods, the wild parties or the beaches? These are just some of the reasons why Asia is one of the most beautiful, adventurous, some things you’ll never see again, places in the world. All of the above are true as studying in Southeast Asia Thailand has been the craziest experience I have ever decided to pursue.

I was an exchange student in Thailand 8 years ago coming all the way from America. I lived and experienced Thailand as a student, a traveller and now as an employee. I have recently traveled back to Bangkok, Thailand to work at the university that I studied so few years ago. The opportunity that has been given to me is such a unique experience as I have a job not as an English teacher, but as a consultant for students from all over the world. I talk with students, counselors, and chef consultants from all over the world to tell them what kind of opportunities international colleges Thailand have to offer. As I explain to them on my own personal experience on adapting to such a rich culture like Thailand, they can see in my eyes the enthusiastic approach I have. It’s the no fear of living a life that is so far away from my home that gets them eager to ask question on my personal experience. With everything going on in this world today, the only peace you can have is with yourself and the people you choose to be around you.

The night markets in Thailand are one of the most famous and best markets in the world. You can buy what ever you want as tourist come from all over the world to visit. When you see something in Thailand that so unique and you must have it, sometimes it best that you just buy it right then and there. If you don't, you never know what that item will become available for purchase again.

During my studies my fellow students and I traveled all over Thailand. We set up our classes so that we would be able to have Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday off and use the weekend to it’s fullest. We could travel every weekend because how cheap Thailand transportation, food, and accommodation really is. The people have in Thailand are so friendly as they have a smile that reached from ear to ear. They will go out of their way to make sure you are taking care of anytime of the day. When I first arrived in Thailand I had no idea what to expect. As I ran off the plane in excitement a heat wave hit me like a glass wall in a museum. The moment I stepped outside I knew that this was no ordinary place. I climbed into a truck that the university arranged to pick me up with another America I have recently just met. It was two in the morning driving in a pick-up truck through Bangkok, Thailand with people I have just met. I knew this was no ordinary adventure. This was something I was going to remember for a long time in my life. I had no idea that this was the start of the bug people get when they feel the excitement of being in a place that is out of this world.

Education in Thailand was one of the best choices I could've made for my education. I was a study abroad exchange student from University of Nevada. I was getting further and further in debt and I didn't know what to do. I was taking business classes but still haven't declared a major yet. When I picked International Business as a major, I had no idea that it was going to make me experience the world outside of my little of friends. I choose to study in Thailand. The reason I choose it was because it was one of the cheapest places to go. Tuition in Thailand was around 5,000USD a year. I heard this university was like the Harvard of Thailand. I thought that was a funny comparison. I still cant believe how affordable it was, and the best part about it was that my credits transfer to my home University. I could study in a country that you can eat a fulfilling dinner for under $3.00 USD.

The people here are so friendly as everyone has a smile on their face as they walk by. With so much killing and fighting throughout the world, Thailand seems like one of the safest places in the world to visit. Once you’re out of the city of Bangkok, there is no better place to relax than Thailand.

What happend to ASEAN

With the Path to ASEAN opening up in Asia, China and India are investing a lot of money into this region. This region is filled with endless possibilities as its a central hub for the rest of the world. During the Vietnam War, Thailand was considered the golden triangle. That means many drugs were made and shipped all over the world from this region. It was a bad part in all the areas around Thailand such as Cambodia and Laos. Don't get me wrong this area has had there problems for many years. A lot of things are associated with Southeast Asia, such as lady boys and prostitution. You cant blame Thailand for having that rap completely. Foreigners coming into their land and making things happened. It's a demand from the western part of the world. It's a terrible thing that people can associate to this region.

As Thailand starts to move forward and improve there way of living, this area is going to continue to grow rapidly. I'm very excited to see what happens in the near future as it will be great to see everything unfold.

What I learned on my study abroad experience

As growing up in the United States you are very closed off on the rest of the world sometimes. When I was a student, Thailand was going through a big change as the Prime Minister of Thailand was being forced out by the people. There was a cue going on in Thailand and the people took over the airport. They closed down the airport for 2-3 weeks with no planes coming in and no planes going out. There was no import or export revenue from the country and Thailand was loosing billions of dollars every day. When I was here, everyone wanted to stay out of downtown. Tourist were stranded as the airlines had to compensate for hotel stay and re locating flights back to peoples home country. I was a crazy time as us as students had no idea what was really going on. News in Thailand is very hard to get out of Thai people.
