Free Credit Report

Learn Exactly How to Get a Free Credit Report

You’ve probably seen “Free Credit Report” ads on the Internet. But they are in fact not free at all. Over and over when you dig in and read the “fine print” you find that in order to get your “free credit report” you have to submit your credit card number and it automatically enrolls you in a credit monitoring service. This is the “catch” and the cost of monitoring your credit is very expensive.

There is only one Credit Report that is truly free and here is where you’ll find it:

Free Annual Credit Report (

This is truly free. You do NOT have to give a credit card number. This is the only way to get your free credit report without a credit card. It’s totally free – except for the time it takes you to fill out the information.

Why is this Free?

In short because the Government passed the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act. In 2003 that requires the three nationwide consumer credit reporting companies:

  • Equifax
  • Experian
  • TransUnion

To give you access to your personal credit history 1 time every 12 months. If you want to have additional access you’ll have to pay for it. The Annual Credit Report site listed above is the site run by these three companies in order to comply with the law!

There you have it the one and only truly free way to get access to your own personal credit scores. More people need to know how to get their free credit reports and not get scammed by some online credit company. So tell your friends!

Note: I personally submit my information online once a year usually in January to get my copies of my free credit reports and I would recommend that you do as well. Knowing what is on your credit report can go a long way towards helping you keep costs down on your own living expenses. A lot of people do not realize that insurance companies look at your credit and will adjust your rates higher if they are bad. You want to take care of credit problems as soon as they arise so these hidden costs do not unfairly take money out of your pocket!

Equifax, Experian, TransUnion the Big 3 Credit Reporting Companies are required by law to give you a free annual credit report - but you have to ask for it!
