Free Public Homeschool Options in California

Updated on August 8, 2017

If you want to homeschool your kids in California, public homeschool programs are one option available to you. Students in these programs are California public school students. All books and supplies are provided for free by the school. A full curriculum is often provided or you will get help putting one together. This is a list of some of the public homeschool options available in California. Many of these programs also offer classes, so children will enjoy both the benefits of one-on-one learning and classroom experiences. Keep in mind that public homeschool students will have to take state tests.

California Virtual Academy (CAVA)

The California Virtual Academy is an online school that uses the k12.com curriculum. Classes may be offered in some areas. Online instructor led classes are also available. Learning coaches (the term for the teaching parent) must implement the CAVA curriculum. Students must use the textbooks provided by the school. This is a good option for parents who don't want to put together a curriculum themselves. K12.com has a curriculum overview.

Connections Academy

Like CAVA, Connections Academy offers a premade curriculum. You can view some sample lessons on their website.

Mercury Online Education

Mercury Online Education has a public tuition free homeschool program that serves Riverside, San Diego, Orange, San Bernardino, and Imperial counties. According to their website, they provide a Classical Education. This is an online program with optional one day a week classes at a learning center.

River Springs Charter School

River Springs Charter School has a public homeschool program that serves students in San Diego, San Bernardino, Orange, Riverside, and Imperial counties. With River Springs you can choose your own materials, so this is a completely independent option. Independent charter school programs are great for homeschoolers who don't want to go it alone but who don't want to be told what to teach. As long as you cover certain requirements, you are free to create a program that works for you and your child. Homeschool classes are offered at learning centers in Temecula on Margarita Road, Corona at Second and Grand Avenue, Riverside on Chicago Ave, Santa Ana on N. Grand Avenue and Hemet on North Girard St.

American River Charter School

American River Charter School is located in Garden Valley in Northern California. The school offers a personalized homeschool program with optional weekly classes. You may choose your own curriculum and supplies. Sports, drama, band and dances are offered to high school students. This charter is contracted with Black Oak Mine Unified School District and follows all of the district's policies.

San Diego Neighborhood Homeschools

San Diego Neighborhood Homeschools located in Oceanside serves San Diego County. The school requires monthly teacher meetings for K-8 students and weekly meetings for high school students. Parents and teachers work together to pick a curriculum that aligns with California content standards.

Circle of Independent Learning (COIL)

Circle of Independent Learning (COIL) is a charter school located in Fremont in Northern California that serves the San Francisco Bay area. The program is for students in Alameda County and adjacent counties. COIL offers a personalized program for each student. Field trips are offered.

"Specific grade level field trips are also provided throughout the year to NASA, Monterey Aquarium, science/social studies camp-over experiences, art galleries and other educational facilities."

Public School Districts

Many public school districts in California offer homeschool programs. Some also offer classes that students can attend. Contact your local school district to find out if they have a homeschooling program.
