Courser.org: Free Online Classes from Stanford?

Updated on September 6, 2012

At this stage of my life, I ponder possibilities for my next chapter. I must have purpose to get up every morning. For the past year I have attempted to enroll in an online paralegal program. I ignore all of the private schools that offer a certificate in 9 months. At the end of the 9 months, you have a worthless piece of paper from a “who” school and owe $50,000. The expense is prohibitive for 4-year college and university programs. Community college programs are few and some require that you get a two-year degree. I have no need for an AA degree!

Free Classes from Stanford

While flipping through a magazine in my orthopedic doctor’s office, I discovered that there are prestigious universities that offer free, nada, online classes. The classes are not part of their standard curriculum and do not earn college credit. However, some of the classes will get you a certificate and they all provide opportunity for personal growth.

IF you are interested, check out courser.org. I see several classes I want to take. Universities include: Princeton, Stanford, Rice, Duke, George Washington, and schools abroad!

Remember, it takes self discipline to complete these classes. The classes are taught by professors who teach regular classes.

Thats a great idea diane, I used to do psychology at night school, its amazing how many credits I got and in fact I could have gone on to be a councilor, but at that time it wasn't suitable for me, but that only cost the amount at each lesson, I think it was about 60 pounds for the course. approx 100 dollars.

Are you in England? The problem with night school is having to go out into the night and return home, especially when it is rainy or cold. The cost of classes are over $500 these days and you have to buy books. These free classes have online reading materials and it is the latest information available. I've got to decide what I want to take.

Yes I am English, I live about 30 miles away from London, its a little village/town by the river. I was lucky really because the school was about five minutes away from where I live so that was fine. yes the cost of classes these days have gone sky high, I went back in the 90s but now its so expensive I would rather do it through the internet. I may just do another course, but not sure yet what I want to do, maybe back to psychology again and take that final course. we are having the worse weather over here at the moment, its rained ever since march! lol! I will be emigrating over there soon!

From the way it sounds, all you need is an Ark. If you are seriously coming, let me know. I am in California.

I'm half way through Model Thinking. The course is through University of Michigan. There is a lot of algebra but the course is so interesting and relevant to social and economic situations going on now.
