Geraldton HMAS Sydney 11 Memorial
HMAS SYDNEY FOUND after 67 years of speculation, of its whereabouts and inuendos of coverups by the governments.
The Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has declared the the Kormoran had been found on March16, 2008, then confirmation came through that the Sydney had been found. It was found off the coast near Geraldton.
Beautiful Memorial at Geraldton
Ater completing a trip around Australia, we drove up to Geraldton to run in our new Chevy motor.
We were pleasantly surprised by the great Memorial for the HMAS Sydney 11 that overlooks the ocean. This ship was sunk in the war and was only found recently with all hands lost at sea.
When walking up the path to this memorial their is a wall of rememberance of all those lost at sea when this tragedy occured, on either side of the entrance.
The dome in the centre has steel cutouts of seagulls with their wings linked together across the top.
There is a propellor on the ground centred under the dome. By using your imagination with the shadows from the seagulls reflecting on the mosaics under the propeller it almost looks like the seagulls flying over the waves of the sea.
The prow of the boat can be seen past the dome with its flag flying proudly
Behind this and to the left there is a life like image of a woman looking out to sea hopefully waiting for her loved one to return safely. As we now know this did not happen as all men were lost at sea. It was not until 2008 that the wreckage was actually found in its resting place.
