Get Through Any Disaster – What You Need To Know: Surviving A Mad Max World I

Updated on February 26, 2009

The time may have come to prepare for the worst imaginable case scenario. Although we're in the middle of a huge economic collapse which has hit every corner of the Earth and naturally we should be most interested in its possible outcome, there are various other scenarios which call for us living the rest of our lives in a post-Apocalyptic world.

Although the spectre of Mutually Assured Destruction by nuclear devastation has considerably faded since the end of the Cold War, various other global threats have surfaced to take its place. A widespread terrorist attack which could irrevocably bring down the telecommunications or power grids could swiftly throw us all into a Mad Max World, as could a global pandemic as some virus, whether it be Ebola, Bird Flu, or any other pathogen suddenly would spread like wildfire, catching the world's medical establishment without a hope of squashing it before it killed hundreds of millions of people. After all, a single soldier in a barracks in Kansas was diagnosed with the 1918 version of the Bird Flu and within a week, in an age where the only speedy transportation systems were horseback and trains, it had spread to virtually every state in the Union! What a pathogen like that would do in an age of universal jet travel is too horrible to predict.

Therefore, at the risk of having my readers sending me Chicken Little "The sky is falling! The sky is falling!" T-shirts, let's go through the truly unimaginable scenarios to determine how we could best survive through them. If, of course, we even wished to survive under these conditions.

Urban areas would become the modern equivalent of Cambodia's killing fields. We as a society are nowhere near the placid, patriotic, puritanical population that existed during the last Great Depression, where the only people resorting to crime were moonshiners and smugglers. Our society today has become infected with a significant minority of violent, trigger happy, sadistic, Clockwork Orange nihilists who are only interested in their own egotistical needs... and if you are standing between them and a can of food, a stash of ammo, or a box of pharmaceuticals, they will kill you with all of the conscience ravaging they would give to swatting a fly.

Let us assume, therefore, that civilization, whether through financial, terroristic, natural, viral or other cause, has effectively collapsed. The cities are in flames. For the sake of argument, let's assume that the cause is viral and the governments of the world are only able to provide a tiny fraction of the vaccine required:

The riots began in Rome at the height of the viral pandemic, when a march along Viale Regina Elena by the trade unions CGIL, CISL and UIL to protest corruption in the distribution of vaccine by the Italian government turned ugly. The demonstrators were confronted by over 10,000 medical personnel demanding that they have first rights to the limited vaccine stocks. In the resultant melee, over 1,000 demonstrators and bystanders were injured and more than 100 were killed. This was only the beginning of the casualties as several hundred more deaths and thousands of injuries were caused when the trade unionists turned to Viale del Policlinico and burned Rome’s largest hospital, the Umberto I Polyclinic, in an attempt to loot the vaccine within. The Italian Armed Forces working with the Carabinieri managed to arrest several thousand demonstrators and the Italian prime minister declared the Capital under martial law.

North America was quickly enveloped by major riots and looting. A mob seeking vaccine stocks occupied the UCLA Medical Center and overwhelmed the LAPD's SWAT teams' attempts to dislodge them. Significant portions of Miami, Cleveland, Oakland, Baltimore, Phoenix, St. Louis and Montreal were looted and burning. Several major hospitals in Houston were raided, with local law-enforcement officials blaming it on the “criminal refugees from the New Orleans floods.” The rumor that Mount Sinai Medical Center had stockpiled half a million doses of vaccine sparked a massive march to Manhattan's Upper East Side. The resultant confrontation was a conflagration. Every building from Mount Sinai down to East 86th Street was burned. By this time the U.S. Military attempted to take control of the streets but was widely unsuccessful. They were unable to protect the Hoffman-La Roche Pharmaceuticals warehouse in Nutley, New Jersey, when it was invaded and burned to the ground after crowds could not find sufficient stocks of the vaccine. The massive hysteria guided the mobs even to irrelevant targets. The Biovail warehouse in Mississauga, Ontario, was looted even though the only antiviral the company produces is against herpes. When the Canadian prime minister declared martial law and a 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. nationwide curfew, the Bloc and Parti Quebecois declared unilateral secession of the Nation of Quebec.

The Chinese government imposed martial law in Shanghai to stem the looting of pharmacies and hospitals, but the unrest quickly spread to Wuhan, Tianjin and Chongqing. When a mob attacked the Beijing United Family Hospital and burned it to the ground, martial law was extended to the entire country including Hong Kong. Taiwan's protests were quickly quelled by the presence of dozens of Chinese warships around the island.

These incidents turned to a continent-wide crisis when the summit of European Union leaders in Brussels called to discuss the international riots was firebombed by crowds demanding vaccine. Most European heads of state, foreign secretaries and chief medical officers were killed or severely injured. This simultaneous decapitation of most of the EU leadership was swiftly followed by runaway rioting and looting that left large portions of Manchester, Naples, Munich, Copenhagen, Prague and Cork in ruins. The provisional EU President announced from the intensive care ward of the Belgian University Hospital that the EU had formally called upon NATO troops to enforce an international curfew on all member states and to restore calm across a burning continent. Even the resolve of this massive military force was attenuated by the incapacitation of over 40 percent of its officers and soldiers to the rampaging pandemic, as the strife and the virus spread to every major city in the world.

With Western governments unable to bolster their traditional allies, much of Israel was overrun by Palestinian and Jordanian troops. The Israeli prime minister gave the invaders 24 hours to leave or threatened to restore Israel’s borders by “the nuclear option.”
