Great Schools For Students with Children: Arizona

Updated on September 20, 2012

The face of a college student is much different than it was 10 or 20 years ago. More single parents, married students and older students are entering the arena. Universities have made living on campus a possibility with family housing. Here is a list of schools that offer such housing in Arizona.

NAU's family housing is being shut down from the fire marshall, which means for the families living here, we live in a constant heavy equipement construction site. All residents must evacuate and are only given officially one day to move our entire family to Raymond hall which is not built to facilitate families. Then in two months we move back to south family and all the burden rests upon the shoulders of the students and not NAU even though NAU has been aware of their gross negligence to maintenance for years. It is disappointing to pay 24,000 a year to live under conditions that are legally unfit and on top of that with no assistance given other then threats to leave or bully techniques used by Residents Life. I mean NAU fails to even update information that they are legally responsible for, and have been using false advertisement since 2011 when I was told there were three residential family areas to choose from but once I got here, they transfered me four times and placed me in a handicap apartment that was unfit living standards. After weekly and consistent maintenance issues that easily qualify as unfit by state law, I asked to be transfered, I was argued with and told no until I told them I would take the issue public and the next day they just happen to have an apartment ready. The reason for the move was the owners, and I still got no assistance or decrease in rent that state law provides.

NAU housing for families are quite small (less than 480-520 square feet) about 40 years old, poorly maintained, with a very old small stove and inadadequate kitchen counter space or cabinets. This makes life difficult when going to school with children. Unlike the beautifful apartments that the university has built for non-married students which include a full size modern kitchen, dishwasher, washer and driers in each apartments. Also we are the only housing on campus that doesn't have landscaping (most common spaces are a mix of sand and dirt) so when the winds pick up we get lots of dust/debris each day in our apartments. As a student cleaning this type of mess adds so much more time to my day that could be studying. This is definitely not a great university for students with children.

NAU is only offering one choice for family housing while non-traditional students get a choice of 17 and much include brand new places, while students with families stay in the oldest housing buildings on campus.....
