Help - what should I do?

Updated on January 15, 2011

Out of the blue I got a phonecall today and I'm not sure what to do about it. I need help from my intelligent and ethical hubpage friends. So please advise me.

A long time ago I started an online directory for my local area. I put a noticeboard up and locals can register and let others know what is going on in the area. I put up a lot of kid friendly stuff that is on in the area. - like fetes and shows etc...

The other side of this website is business and organization listings.

I keep talking to people and listing businesses and organizations but today I got a call from an unexpected quarter - an escort agency asking for a listing on my site.

I never want to be rude but I told the woman my site is really a family friendly one and I didn't think it would be appropriate to list her agency.

She said our industry saves a lot of families.

I laugh and I like to be open-minded and tolerant so I let her tell me more about the business and other interests she had which she was keen to do.

The conversation ended with me saying OK send an email and I will have to think about it.

I'm only frying small fish - it's not as if my site is a huge concern to anyone.

So there it is sitting in my inbox - an email from an escort agency with all the details for the listing on my site and I honestly dont know whether I should be listing it or not.

As they say, it is the oldest profession in the world and whether I list her agency or not will not change that but it has thrown me because on the one hand I want to be fair and equitable whereas on the other hand I think I should keep an adult-free reputation on my site.

Am I sounding too prudish or what? I need some feedback from my fellow hubbers about this.
Even newspapers make a space for this so shouldn't I?

But I don't know.

Nothing against the escort service - I'm realistic about adult stuff - it was just not the right context to list such things. Thanks for dropping in Painter Penfield.

Enjoyed reading this post. I was happy to scroll down and see that you did NOT list the escort service after all. Sigh...happy ending are good after all. Think I'll catch some zzzzz and do it all again tomorrow.

If it was my website I'd not allow escort businesses on it. Especially as you say it is a kid friendly site, keep the adult businesses out of it. There are many other places they can advertise their services, you are not discriminating.

I think you know more than you are giving yourself credit for.......

You want your service to be family oriented....this other business, though it may be a viable one, is not part of a family theme or family experience. It does not fit your vision. There is no discrimination.

@Silva Hayes - at this stage I have a free listing and one that is featured which works by donation. So I suppose I charge for a featured listing. Thank-you for your comment - I probably need to clarify my site terms but I'm in a quandary at this point in time.

Thank-you @onegoodwoman - a valid insight. My difficulty is that my conscience also tells me to be fair/not to discriminate so am I violating it if I dont include the service?

It will be far easier living with your own conscience , than explaining why you violated it.

It's your website. You have doubts; that's why you wrote this hubpage. If you want a kid-friendly, family oriented site, then you probably don't want to list it. If it were mine, I would not list it. You are setting a precedent if you do. Do you charge businesses to list on your site? That might enter into your decision also. If you do not charge them, then you are well within your rights to refuse. However, if you do charge businesses to list, then you might want to check into this further. Hope this help!
