How To Impress A Job Interviewer

What is the first step? Getting the application is the beginning of the journey to a new job. Asking the correct question when going to a place of employment is the most important statement a person will ever make in the starting process of seeking employment. NEVER ask anyone if they are hiring, INSTEAD ask for an employment application. Why? Most applications will remain in the company files for up to six months. So, just because they aren’t hiring at the time a person gets the application, doesn’t mean they won’t be hiring in the future. If you are told that they only take applications on line, see if you can talk to the manager. Carry on a brief conversation. Ask about that particular location and how things are done there. This will show that you are interested in the type of work being done, but even more important, you have an, “eye ball to eye ball” contact with the manager.

This is important for another reason too, the headquarters company may ask the local manager for their opinion of you. Since you have already made in impression on the manager, this will assist him/her in giving the headquarter the correct informtion. After that, ask for the online address. If you don’t have a computer, go to the local library and see if they have one. (In most cases they will. IWhile itt may be free to use the computer, they may charge a small fee.)

A person should dress properly when making inquiries about a job application as they would if they were attending an interview. You could be talking to the person who does the hiring and not know it. When you get the application, be sure to fill it out as soon as possible, (that same day would be nice), and return it to the place of employment. This is especially important if applying for a part-time position since the applications are usually processed in the order that they were received. Make sure the application is done in ink, (black is best, since black ink will copy more clearly than blue or any other color of ink if copies need to be made.) Keep the application neat in appearance. It shouldn’t be folded or wrinkled when turned to the potential employer. Make sure all data is accurate. (Many employers will contact your references, especially if a person lists previous employers, so be honest.) Call or even visit the store before asking for an application to see how the employees are dressed. This is one situation where you may want to be overdressed and well groomed. Reason? It’s the same, as when you pick up an application – you don’t know who will be giving you the application, and it may be a manager. Even if it’s not the manager, the person who does the hiring may ask the person who gave and/or received the application what their first impression was concerning the person who turned in the application.

After several weeks have passed, and you haven’t received any form of communication from the company where you applied, it might be worth the effort to call and find out if they are considering you or not. (Only call back once, since this will show your interest plus remind them of your application, but you aren’t being a pest.

If you are contacted for an interview, here are some steps to consider.

Do your homework. Most companies of any size have a web page, so read it and know what the company does. Know some details about the company, for example: do they have multiple locations, and where are they. Also know what benefit your presence will make. (Don’t brag, but be honest.) For example: if you are applying for a retail sales position, being dependable is very important. Keep a positive attitude, and smile.

Appearance: the first impression is the most important, so keep this in mind as you prepare for the interview that you want to be attractive, but not an attraction.

Grooming: Make sure you hair is clean. No spiked hair, or shocking colors of the hair such as orange, purple, etc. Have a good manicure the day before the interview. There is nothing worse than to see dirty, un-kept fingernails. For you women, if you use nail polish, make the color bland or neutral. No long press applies nails or nails with designs on them. If you use lipstick, like the finger nail polish, keep it bland or neutral in color. Remove any piercing you may have that are visible. This also applies to tattoos – cover them with clothing if possible. Do not wear any perfume or aftershave. (Someone who is allergic to these odors might interview you.) Remove any chewing gum or candy from the mouth before meeting the interviewer. Do not put a breath mint in your mouth during the interview.

Dress for success! Women should wear a casual business out fit. Accessories should be limited to ear rings, a necklace, one ring, (besides the wedding or engagement ring) and one bracelet, but not bangles. Shoes should be clean, polished, and no spiked heels. (High heels can be worn, but not over 2-3”) Men, the shoes should be laced type, no loafers. Men should also wear socks that go over the calf. (There is nothing worse than seeing a man’s hairy leg.) Men should not wear any jewelry, except for a wedding ring. Like women, remove all body piercing that can be seen by the interviewer.

When you enter of office of the interviewer, do not sit down until invited to sit down by the interviewer.

The person doing the interviewing may know body language. If he or she does, only a portion of what you say will influence the interviewer, the rest of it coming from your body. Once you have sat down, keep you legs uncrossed and sit with good posture. Maintain eye contact. Don’t clasp your hands or fiddle with anything in your hand or cross your arms. Wait until you are asked a question before talking, and listen to the question carefully before answering. Once you begin talking in order to answer the question, don’t ramble. Just answer the question with no more detail than needed, but don’t be too brief or you might give the impression you are in a hurry. When leaving once the interview is over, don’t extend your hand but if they offer there’s shake it. Make sure have a firm grip, but not “bone breaking”. Never twist you arm so you hand is on top, (this may indicate you feel superior to the interviewer,) nor let you hand be on the bottom, (this may indicate your feel inferior to the interviewer,) but on the side, (which may indicate you feel equal to the interviewer.

When you exit the interview, be sure to stand straight, hand up, and move naturally.

If you haven’t received any results in two weeks, call and ask about what is going to happen. This will serve as a reminder to the interviewer. (If it’s a promotion within the organization where you are already employed, it will be better if you check with a supervisor.)
